Will Ethereum Fork? - ¿Ethereum bifurcará?
A couple of days ago I published about a possible split of the Ethereum chain due to the "rebellion" of some miners who oppose the much-announced merger that in theory will take place next month but that is already being mentioned in the halls of the intricate crypto world that is very likely to be postponed for at least another month.
As I said in that post, a group of miners who estimate that they will lose part of their profits plus investment in equipment if they adapt to the new PoS (proof of stake) consensus protocol are firmly advancing the idea of causing a fork in the chain creating a token of its own that, of course, will continue to be mined as in the present with the old PoW (proof of work).
To make it clear, when the ETH consensus protocol is changed, mining must stop and it will go to another chain that uses the new protocol, but what happens if some do not stop mining? That old chain will continue to work.
It has happened before, perhaps for different reasons, but blockchains have been forked, creating new tokens, including that of the giant bitcoin, as I also mentioned in that post, this chain in which we are writing and interacting was divided from Steem.
I have read a couple of interesting publications where it is mentioned that anticipating this matter of a possible fork, the creators of Ethereum have placed, a long time ago, a code that will cause those who decide to continue mining with the current methodology will see performance affected to such an extent that closing a block will absolutely cease to be profitable.
This issue, which may or may not be a surprise to some, brings up many questions for which I do not have definitive answers, to begin with, the matter of having planned years ago to do something for a future that at that time was not decided from any point of view; another issue is open source. The code with which the project is written is supposed to be freely available, auditable, perfectible,
and many other benefits that it supposes. In that case, those who take the code and do the fork, can't they remove that malicious code?
I have many other questions, but why continue if I don't even know the answers to these first two?
While we find out more, the time for the merger continues to tick and the expectations for the value of the token are at a high level, so much so that its price continues to a slow but steady increase. Could it be that doubts about the future do not let it take off?
Un par de días atrás publiqué sobre una posible escisión de la cadena de Ethereum debida a la “rebeldía” de algunos mineros que se oponen a la tan anunciada fusión que en teoría se realizará el mes próximo pero que ya se está mencionando en los pasillos del intrincado mundo criptográfico que es muy probable que se postergue al menos un mes más.
Como dije en esa publicación, un grupo de mineros que estiman perderán parte de sus ganancias más la inversión en equipamiento si se adecuan al nuevo protocolo de consenso PoS (proof of stake) están avanzando firmemente en la idea de provocar una bifurcación en la cadena creando un token propio que por supuesto, continuará minándose como en el presente con el antiguo PoW (proof of work).
Para dejarlo claro, cuando se cambie el protocolo de consenso ETH deberá dejar de minarse y pasará a otra cadena que utilizara el nuevo protocolo, pero ¿qué pasa si algunos no dejan de minar?, esa antigua cadena continuará funcionando.
Ya ha ocurrido antes, por motivos diferentes quizás, pero se han bifurcado cadenas de bloques creando nuevos tokens inclusive en la del gigante bitcoin, como también mencioné en aquella publicación, esta cadena en la que estamos escribiendo e interactuando se dividió de Steem.
He leído un par de interesantes publicaciones donde se menciona que, previendo este asunto de una posible bifurcación, los creadores de Ethereum han colocado, hace ya mucho tiempo, un código que provocará que aquellos que decidan continuar minando con la metodología actual verán afectada la performance a tal punto que cerrar un bloque dejará absolutamente de ser rentable.
Este tema que puede o no ser sorpresa para algunos, me trae muchos interrogantes para los que no tengo respuestas definitivas, para comenzar el asunto de haber previsto hace años hacer algo para un futuro que en ese momento no estaba decidido bajo ningún punto de vista; otro tema es el código abierto. Se supone que el código con el que está escrito el proyecto es de libre disponibilidad, auditable, perfectible y otras muchas otras bondades que el mismo supone. En ese caso, aquellos que tomen el código y realicen la bifurcación, ¿no pueden eliminar ese código malicioso?
Tengo muchas otras preguntas, pero para que continuar si ni siquiera se las respuestas a estas dos primeras.
Mientras averiguamos más el tiempo para la fusión continúa corriendo y las expectativas por el valor del token están en un alto nivel, tanto que su cotización continua un lento pero firme aumento. ¿Será que las dudas por el futuro no lo dejan despegar?

I don’t think that is possible. Even if they knew the exact date of the Merge in advance, the date has changed several times. How to build that into the code?
The problem I imagine miners who don’t merge will have is having a blockchain that has no value. After the merge everything is migrating to the new Ethereum. My understanding is(and it is rudimentary); the old Eth won't have that same price. You would have to get it listed on exchanges, etc. I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong. I just don’t see miners not staking under the new Ethereum as a viable option.
Everything is yet to be resolved, we will have to wait until the publicized merger is carried out and there we will know if a new currency is created or not. Thank you for your comments @lucky-elephant.
Quería leer todo tu escrito, pero es la 1:30 am pasada y mi cerebro tiene una inteligencia más vinculada con el lado del arte. Lo que quiero decir, es que me resulta difícil concentrarme en el tema crypto a esta hora, jaja.
