The Scorpion and the Frog - El escorpión y la rana
A fable whose origin is unknown, although it is usually attributed to Aesop, a writer of Greek origin born about 600 years BC and initiator of the genre of short story writing, generally featuring animals, which in all cases left at the end of the reading teaching.
For those who do not know or do not remember the story, it is about a scorpion that needed to cross a river and asks the frog to carry it on its back, the suspicious frog asks if the arthropod is going to sting it. The arachnid replies that of course, he is not going to stab him with his poisonous sting because if he did he would also die of drowning. In the middle of the river, the scorpion sticks its appendage with poison in the frog and the frog asks him before dying why he had done it since that means the end of both, the scorpion answers that he could not avoid it, and the act of killing was part of its predatory nature.
In recent years I have heard on several occasions the allusion to that unfortunate fable, often attributed to our current government, some of whose actions are so difficult to explain even in many cases contrary to its own interests, as if its nature were self-destruction. Of course, politics has its own rules, interests, and strategies and perhaps in that parallel world, the fables and their teachings do not exist.
In the last month, we have attended as spectators various negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, not so much to stop this absurd war but to form a kind of truce that allows the mutual export of grains to alleviate the famine that has been unleashed beyond the existing, mainly in Asian and African countries that depend in huge percentages on the remittances that both countries send regularly and that have been completely stopped since the conflict began.
A few days after the negotiations began, Russia bombed the port of Odesa in a confusing episode. The scorpion stung the frog when they were just beginning to cross the turbulent waters of an incipient humanitarian truce.
With the passing of days, it seems that things have returned to a certain degree of reasonableness and the negotiations continued in the midst of tense calm. These days a ship has sailed through the Black Sea transporting the essential food for many countries that do urgently need to alleviate the famine that is a fact.
Let us hope that this time the belligerent nature gives way to contained reasonableness, the figures are dramatic, approximately 40 countries among which are the poorest in the world receive a large percentage of their imports of wheat and other cereals precisely from the scorpion and the frog (put you in the order you want who is which), just for a moment imagine the current situation and pray that they reach the other shore.
Una fábula cuyo origen es desconocido, aunque se la suele atribuir a Esopo, un escritor de origen griego nacido unos 600 años AC e iniciador del género de escritura de relatos cortos generalmente protagonizado por animales que en todos los casos dejaba al final de la lectura una enseñanza.
Para aquellos que no conozcan o no recuerden el cuento, se trata de un escorpión que necesitaba cruzar un río y le pide a la rana que lo transporte en su lomo, la rana recelosa le pregunta si no la va a picar a lo que el artrópodo arácnido responde que por supuesto no le va a clavar su aguijón ponzoñoso porque de hacerlo el también moriría ahogado. En medio del río el escorpión clava su apéndice con veneno en la rana y esta le pregunta antes de morir porqué lo había hecho ya que eso significa el fin de ambos, el escorpión le contesta que no lo pudo evitar, la acción de matar era parte de su naturaleza depredadora.
En los últimos años he escuchado en diversas ocasiones la alusión a esa desgraciada fábula, muchas veces atribuida a nuestro actual gobierno, algunas de cuyas acciones son tan difíciles de explicar incluso en muchos casos contrarias a sus propios intereses, como si su naturaleza fuera de autodestrucción. Por supuesto la política tiene sus propias reglas, intereses y estrategias y quizás en ese mundo paralelo las fábulas y sus enseñanzas no existan.
En el último mes hemos asistido como espectadores a diversas negociaciones entre Rusia y Ucrania, no tanto para detener esa absurda guerra sino para formar una especie de tregua que permita la exportación mutua de granos para paliar la hambruna que se ha desatado más allá de la existente, principalmente en países de Asia y África que dependen en enormes porcentajes de las remesas que ambos países envía regularmente y que están totalmente detenidas desde que comenzó el conflicto.
A los pocos días de comenzadas las negociaciones Rusia bombardeó en un confuso episodio, el puerto de Odessa, el escorpión picó a la rana cuando recién comenzaban a atravesar las turbulentas aguas de una incipiente tregua humanitaria.
Con el correr de los días parece que las cosas volvieron a tener un cierto sesgo de razonabilidad y las negociaciones continuaron en medio de una calma tensa. Por estos días ha salido un barco por el Mar Negro transportando el imprescindible alimento para muchos países que necesitan imperiosamente para paliar la hambruna que es un hecho.
Esperemos que esta vez la naturaleza beligerante deje paso a una razonabilidad contenida, las cifras son dramáticas, aproximadamente 40 países entre los que se encuentran los más pobres del mundo reciben un gran porcentaje de sus importaciones de trigo y otros cereales justamente del escorpión y la rana (pongan Uds. en el orden que deseen quien es cual), solo por un instante imaginen la situación actual y recemos para que lleguen a la otra orilla.
