Forgotten memories - Recuerdos olvidados

A black and white photograph, hidden at the bottom of a cardboard box filled to the brim with memorabilia from anniversaries, baptisms, parties, and trips, even some of which I didn't know existed; people we don't remember, completely forgotten situations.
Among that set of messy photos, I found this portrait, surely taken by me, of a person who greatly influenced a whole group of pre-adolescents, including myself, during the five years of high school.
He entered our school as a seminarian at the exact moment that I was entering the first year, an establishment that by the way belonged (and belongs) to the Congregation of the Salesians of Don Bosco, then, at some point within that period of time, he went to the category of deacon. All those years he organized an excursion to the province of Córdoba for the summer, surely to shorten the time that the students spent away from school and from God, also to strengthen the group and set them on the path of friendship, solidarity, and the hope of achieving that with this we would all be a little more supportive and understanding with others.
By some design that is beyond my understanding, I was able to attend those 15 days of vacation in the tourist hotels of Embalse Río Tercero, the five years that high school lasted, I was one of two privileged ones who had full assistance. In my case, a true miracle since my parents had to make an enormous effort to pay the costs of the trip.
One of those years my father decidedly announced to me that he couldn't afford the trip, I think it was in the fourth year; the deacon, together with several companions, redoubled efforts to raise the necessary money to help me pay my share, and we held raffles, we collected cardboard and newspapers that we later sold, we collected food to take away and we carried out not one but two festivals with kermesse, an endless number of tasks that each year they helped pay for part of the expenses that derived from the tickets and stays in those beautiful hotels of that tourist town.
Of course, at the end of school, each one of us took a different course: university, work, family. I never saw Jorge again, but if I knew that he did not become a priest or resigned, I honestly do not have complete information. Some of my former classmates from that time told me that he had gotten married and he had also started a family.
It's funny how the human mind works, all those pleasant memories and many more brought to my mind his photography, old lived and forgotten moments that small detail like this can bring to life from among the hidden folds of memory, like the distant shelves and full of dust from our library, as if we were taking a book from there and opening its pages to read it again as if we had just returned from those vacations in the province of Córdoba.
