Sunday Walk along the Almond River on the edge of Edinburgh

avatar

My wife, daughter and I took a nice sunday stroll along the River Almond on the edge of Edinburgh today. It was a lovely spring day and the sun was shining.

The river defines part of the western edge of the city of Edinburgh where it runs into the sea (the Firth of Forth). There is a lovely river walk down one side, which is quite popular, and was fairly busy today.

It was a lot drier than the last time I did it a few months back.

We started at Crammond Brig (bridge) at the top and walked all the way to the River Mouth where it flows into the Firth of Forth.

Our daughter is 12, and does not like going for walks much - she didnt moan too much today !

I love the tree in the pic above - its about half way along the walk, and it is carved all around by various people. Many seem to be carving hearts with their and their loved ones names in - quite cool !

The building above is on the path, and you can walk through it. Its an old iron mill dating from 1770. We stopped to read the information board that is outside of it (pic below) and I had to laugh because basically it didnt last long because they were bad at running the business !

The weir beside it is quite pretty.

It was a lot busier towards the mouth of the river, and lots of people were making a stop at the ice cream van - including us - thats how we managed to bribe our daughter to go so far.

The views across the firth, which is a sea inlet, were quite nice today, with beautiful blue skies.

There was quite a few ducks down at the mouth of the river.

And also a group of swans.

I also love this carved tree which lies along the path - someone has carved it where it has fallen, noting its natural shark-like shape.

Well I certainly enjoyed the walk, and the ice cream (which probably undid the step benefits I was getting from the exercise).

The weather has been lovely here in Scotland this weekend - long may it continue ! I hope you are also having a great weekend wherever you are !

This was a great weekend, wasn't it? The Almond River looks amazing for a family trip, just like you did. Thanks for letting us know about this beautiful place :)

Hi @hoosie. I'll start by confessing that I loved Edinburgh, its gardens, streets, people, and architecture. I always remember the flower clocks, but also the hurricane winds that made me hold on to a post so as not to literally fly off. The countryside and its rivers are natural attractions of the country and should be part of the pride of the Scots. Congratulations receive a fraternal greeting.
