holoz0r’s A-Z of Steam: Book of Demons - Why is this so addictive?

Few games are addictive as the pinnacle of the Diablo series (those being the first two games in that series) - due to the rewarding gameplay loop of progression, loot, powering up, then moving deeper into the depths of enemy territory to save the lands and become an unstoppable hero.

When you combine this with rogue like elements as Book of Demons does, and procedural generation of the levels, you have something which offers infinite replay value, and when it contains adorable art direction as Book of Demons does (resembling a pop up diorama book) it is hard to not be enthralled by the game.

The best thing about procedurally generated levels is that you’re in control. You get to determine the length of the next dungeon you jump into, and you’ll get rewards that are commensurate with your time commitment.

As a result, this is a game that respects your time, allowing you to bite off small chunks at a time, all the while cutting out the unnecessary noise and depth that modern games have, except for those that count towards the fun part of the game mechanics.

What results is a highly polished, enthralling, and rewarding experience that for the current price of admission during the Steam summer sale makes this game an absolute no brainer of a purchase, particularly if enjoy dungeon crawling games that shower you in no nonsense loot. No time is spent sorting your inventory and comparing equipment.

It’s all about your abilities, unlocking new slots to empower your character further, and ensuring a decent balance of all your skills so that you might succeed.

All those pointless things you do in Diablo-style games is stripped away, leaving only the best features. As a result, you’ve got a game that I wish I had played (and known about) sooner, because this is what games should be like.

If you do elect to buy this game, be warned, you will need a new mouse (probably) and quite possibly need to invest in some sort of medical insurance for your index finger. You'll be clicking a lot, or perhaps you might learn to click and hold, which is an option too.

Currently, its a steal at only AUD$8.73, so get the game. I'll be playing the game more, and I'll find out if it has the depth of mechanics I normally crave in these sorts of games, or whether the beauty is just skin deep.

Oooooh, that sounds promising!!

I'm only allowing myself one game during the Summer Sale and I'm being super duper picky about it, umming and ahhing, trying to choose... this one just might be a contender.

Totally worth it. Has three classes, too; Warrior, Archer and Spell-slinging mage / wizard. It's great.

The art style does look cute in that one. I like Diablo (have only played the first two), think I would have played the hell out of this if I had time to game XD

I'll recommend it to @shadowlioncub, he seems to like the dungeon crawlers :)
