Greetings to all the hivers that make life in this community, today taking advantage of the international day of DYSLEXIA I come to talk a little about this topic.

In many opportunities we as parents want our children to be excellent in everything, when I talk about everything I mean at a general level, we want them to be good in their studies, in the sport they practice, in the extra activities in which they are, to have the best behavior, in short, in an endless number of things, but what happens when the teacher calls that mom and tells her that her child has DYSLEXIA? Thousands of questions arise: What is that, what should I do, where should I take him, what will happen to him?

Well, here I leave this topic to clarify a little about this disorder.

What is dyslexia?

It is a learning disorder, specifically focused on the acquisition of reading and writing, affecting the ability to decode letters, words, make rhymes and analyze or classify sounds.

Dyslexia occurs in regular children, that is to say, they do not have to be children with special educational needs to have this disorder, even it has nothing to do with neurological level, they can become highly intelligent children and only present difficulty in the area of reading and writing.

SIGNS OF A CHILD WITH DYSLEXIA

  • They usually present speech delay.
  • They tend to be repetitive with short words such as: and, to, he, she, like, but.
  • Difficulty in the pronunciation of new words.
  • Reversal of letters and numbers (b, d, p, q).
  • Difficulty transferring paragraphs and even words from the blackboard to the notebook.
  • Difficulty in acquiring a language other than his/her own.
  • Tend to be more frustrated when they have difficulty consolidating knowledge.
  • Present problems in following instructions.
  • Tend to present confusion in laterality (right, left).

How is dyslexia diagnosed?

When detecting several of the above signs and even when detecting others, you can go to the relevant specialists, at this point I clarify that teachers can give a DIAGNOSTIC SYNTHESIS and we can even say that a STUDENT IMPRESSES WITH SOME CONDITION OR DISORDER, however we must get there, since we are not qualified to DIAGNOSE AS SUCH, This is done by specialists such as psychologists or neurologists, in this case the psychologist is the qualified specialist who can detect this disorder, and can even help to cope with it through individualized psychological therapies with the child, working with psychologist, family and school, for better progress.

How should a child with dyslexia be treated at school?

The first thing to know is that no child can be denied pedagogical attention in any school just because he/she has dyslexia, the duty of every teacher is to make curricular adaptations in the student with dyslexia in order to facilitate their learning and consolidation of the same, in the same way, should be working together with parents and in this case with the psychologist who handles the case for better progress.

Some of these adaptations can be:

  • Respect the child's rhythm of writing and reading, therefore, must give in and give extra time in verbal and written evaluations.
  • Eradicate reading in public, this to avoid the child's frustration.
  • Adaptation in terms of evaluations, it can be more verbal than written evaluations.

  • Take into account the child's interest in preferred activities or games to help build self-confidence.

  • Work with the child in a more individualized way.

How can we support children with dyslexia?

As parents and as teachers we have a duty to support our children or our students with this disorder, by means of:

  • Positive reinforcement whenever progress is noted.
  • Words of encouragement every time a setback is noticed (come on, you can do it, very well).
  • Recognizing their efforts.
  • Congratulate him/her in public.

Today, International Dyslexia Day, I leave you my small contribution so that both teachers and parents can identify and guide children who have this disorder.

I just known dyslexia today, thanks to your post. Now I wonder if a classmate of mine way back in 1998 has dyslexia. He asked me to teach him how to solve a "solve for X" equation before a periodical exam. It is sad the he still not able to grasp the process of solving a "solve for X" equation. I wonder where he is now.
