Los libros son magia, te llevan a explorar historias haciendo que vivas cada párrafo, naufragas sus páginas. Desde hace mucho tiempo me ha fascinado el mundo de los libros, sobre todo el impreso, ese olor a la tinta de imprenta ha quedado guardado en memoria, me ha cautivado. Con el tiempo fui aprendiendo a valorar la calidad del papel, su grosor, su textura, y sobre todo como distribuían todo una catidad de textos en tantas páginas. En aquel entonces, no sabía que me estaba inclinando al mundo del diseño gráfico editorial, luego con el tiempo aprendí el oficio, conociendo el proceso desde lo digital hasta lo físico, incluso a pasar horas en imprentas para conocer el proceso.

At that time, I did not know that I was leaning to the world of editorial graphic design, then over time I learned the trade, knowing the process from the digital to the physical, even spending hours in printers to learn the process.

Poco a poco fui dándole valor a todo ese trabajo, reconociendo todo el esfuerzo a tantos detalles que debes poner para concretar la edición de un libro. El año pasado le trabajé a un amigo toda su imagen gráfica, Carlos Rabascall, luego, hace pocos meses me comentó para diseñarle un libro, Secretos del Bosque. El diseño editorial tiene una gran labor: entender el mensaje de su creador. Este mensaje debemos abordarlo con mucha responsabilidad, de tal manera que los lectores puedas recibirlo como lo tiene dibujado el autor en su cabeza. Eso es líneas generales, pero navegando en aguas mas profundas, mi labor se refiere a plasmar todo aquello en formas, tamaño, estilo, colores y tipografía, eligiendo lo mas adecuado para lograr transmitir su mensaje, todo su concepto, de la mejor manera posible.

Last year I worked on the graphic image of a friend of mine, Carlos Rabascall, then a few months ago he asked me to design a book for him, Secretos del Bosque. Editorial design has a great task: to understand the message of its creator. This message must be approached with a lot of responsibility, so that readers can receive it as the author has drawn it in his head. That is general lines, but sailing in deeper waters, my work refers to capture everything in shapes, size, style, colors and typography, choosing the most appropriate to convey the message, the whole concept, in the best possible way.

Mi amigo como autor tenía una idea bien clara de todo lo que deseaba, sabía que tipos de imágenes queria, daba ideas muy concretas, lo que me permitió acertar y aterrizar adecuadamente lo que el necesitaba. De esta manera componer cada elemento de acuerdo al estilo que visualizaba fue relativamente cómodo. Ambos nos gustó el resultado, empezando por el formato del libro y la portada, cautivando hasta la la página final. Me gusta mucho trabajar en Adobe Indesing para el diseño editorial, la herramienta te brinda bastante orden, además que no carga las imágenes en alta resolución para una mayor flexibilidad dentro del programa.

My friend as an author had a very clear idea of everything he wanted, he knew what kind of images he wanted, he gave very concrete ideas, which allowed me to hit and land properly what he needed. In this way, composing each element according to the style he envisioned was relatively comfortable. We both liked the result, starting with the format of the book and the cover, captivating until the final page. I really like working in Adobe Indesing for editorial design, the tool gives you a lot of order, plus it doesn't load the images in high resolution for greater flexibility within the program.

Por lo regular, hacemos un tablero de referencias para proyectar el diseño en ello, sin embargo, Carlos estuvo tan claro que me hizo visualizar su idea bastante vintage, que no me hizo tanta falta. De esta manera fuí incluyendo imágenes, formas, texturas... todo basado en la inspiración del autor, incluso, las fotografía de su autoría que me enviaba para introducirlas en el proyecto. En todo momento tuve presente la composición y el peso gráfico en cada página en la que avanzaba. De esta manera logré, a mi juicio, desarrollar el libro lo más equilibrado que pude. Finalmente, es un trabajo creativo, experimenté mucho en el proceso, quizás en momentos no me quedaban tan claras las ideas, sin embargo, fui ajustando cada detalles en la medida de la experimentación y en el uso de cada elemento.

Usually, we make a reference board to project the design on it, however, Carlos was so clear that he made me visualize his vintage idea, that I didn't need it so much. In this way I was including images, shapes, textures... everything based on the author's inspiration, including his photographs that he sent me to introduce them in the project. At all times I kept in mind the composition and graphic weight in each page I was working on. In this way I managed, in my opinion, to develop the book as balanced as I could. Finally, it is a creative work, I experimented a lot in the process, perhaps at times the ideas were not so clear to me, however, I was adjusting each detail as I experimented and used each element.

Secretos del Bosque es un trabajo que esperamos llegue a muchas personas, que disfruten cada detalle que tomámos en cuenta para cargarlo de mucha identidad y originalidad. A pesar que el producto final ha sido bastante vintage, quedó muy poderoso, armónico y muy limpio. El proceso creativo no quedó allí, una vez concluido el diseño editorial, le propuse hacer unos mockup (él lo desconocia totalmente) para que los presentara durante su promoción. Los mockup son piezas gráficas, fotomontajes, que permiten visualizar a las personas como quedaría su proyecto. Estos montajes los realicé en Adobe Photoshop. Carlos, el autor, como un plus, le agregó un archivo extra al libro, un afiche que elaboré en Adobe Illustrator, usando una imagen libre de derecho disponible de manera gratuita en freepik aquí. Este afiche proporciona indicaciones, de manera práctica, todo lo que comenta en el libro, gran parte del conocimiento que adquirió de sus abuelos.

Secrets of the Forest is a work that we hope will reach many people, that they will enjoy every detail that we took into account to load it with a lot of identity and originality. Although the final product has been quite vintage, it was very powerful, harmonic and very clean. The creative process didn't stop there, once the editorial design was finished, I proposed him to make some mockups (he didn't know it at all) so he could present them during his promotion. The mockups are graphic pieces, photomontages, that allow people to visualize how their project would look like. These montages were made in Adobe Photoshop. Carlos, the author, as a plus, added an extra file to the book, a poster I made in Adobe Illustrator, using a royalty-free image available for free on freepik aquí. This poster gives indications, in a practical way, of everything he discusses in the book, much of the knowledge he acquired from his grandparents.
