The Aceh Museum was founded on July 31, 1915 under the name Atjeh Museum led by F.W. Stammeshous and inaugurated by the Civil and Military Governor General of the Netherlands H.N.A. Swart. At the beginning of the establishment of the Museum building was only in the form of Rumoh Aceh.
After Indonesia's independence, the operations of the Aceh Museum were alternately managed by the Regional Government of Banda Aceh Tk.II (1945-1969), the Iskandar Muda Community Development Agency (Baperis) (1970-1975), the Ministry of Education and Culture (1976-2002) and currently the management of the Aceh Museum is under the authority of the Aceh Provincial Government. Based on the Governor's Decree Number 10 of 2002 dated February 2, 2002, the status of the Aceh Museum became UPTD Museum of Aceh Province under the Aceh Culture and Tourism Office.
Until 2019, the Aceh Museum has 5,328 collections of cultural objects of various types and 12,445 books of various titles containing various kinds of knowledge.

if you are a lover of historical tourism, the Aceh Museum is a place that should not be missed while stopping in Banda Aceh. Located on Jalan Alauddin Mahmud Syah, Banda Aceh, this museum stores various knick-knacks from the history of the Acehnese people since the prehistoric era. Here we can find various types of tools, agricultural equipment, household appliances, traditional weapons and traditional clothes. In this museum we can also find various collections of ancient manuscripts, historical photo documentation and mockups of the development of the Baiturrahman Great Mosque.

This museum was founded during the reign of the Dutch East Indies. The inauguration was carried out on July 31, 1915, by the Civil and Military Governor of Aceh, General H.N.A Swart. This museum is headed by FW Stammeshaus who served as Head of the Museum as well as Curator until 1931. At that time, the museum was only in the form of a traditional Acehnese house (Rumoh Aceh) whose existence is still maintained in the museum courtyard area to this day. This wood-based building is in the form of a stilt house with a peg construction system that can be disassembled flexibly.

Rumoh Aceh was previously shown in the Colonial Exhibition (De Koloniale Tentoonsteling) which took place in Semarang the previous year. In the exhibition, most of the collections in the Aceh Pavilion are Stammeshaus' private collections plus various collections of heirlooms from the Aceh sultanate. In this exhibition, Rumoh Aceh was awarded as the best Pavilion with 4 gold medals, 11 silver medals and 3 bronze medals for various categories.
Among the collections that are quite popular from this museum is a bell that is 1400 years old. This bell is called the 'Donya Cakra Bell' which was a gift from the Chinese Emperor of the Ming Dynasty to the Sultan of Pasai in the 15th Century, which was presented during the benevolent journey of Admiral Muhammad Cheng Ho. This bell was brought to Aceh when Sultan Ali Mughayat Syah of the Aceh Sultanate conquered Pasai in 1524 AD.
