Hollywood achieves a good remake of a classic, albeit with a clear commercial aesthetic./ Hollywood logra un buen remake de un clásico, aunque con una clara estética comercial.

A Perfect Murder is a remake of Alfred Hitchcock's 1954 classic thriller, directed by Andrew Davis in 1998, although of course any comparison with the great master of suspense carries a certain risk.

In reality, in many ways it differs from the previous classic (considered one of the ten best suspense films of all time) and what it has most in common is that both are derived from the play by English playwright Frederick Knott Dial M for Murder written in 1952 and in some Latin American countries was released under the name La Llamada Fatal (The Fatal Call).

The only thing it has in common with Hitchcock's previous film is that it is based on F. Knott's play Dial M for Murder (1952), but was later radically restructured in the screenplay by Patrick Smith Kelly.

The initial plot of the film is set in New York (instead of London in Hitchcock's film) where the rich and powerful financial tycoon Steven Taylor (played by Michael Douglas), is married to the beautiful Emily Bradford Taylor, (played by Gwyneth Paltrow) replacing the tennis champion in the original film.

The wife's lover, David Shaw (played by Viggo Mortenssen), a penniless, bohemian painter, replaces the writer of similar characteristics in the 1954 film.

Steven hires a detective and discovers that his wife - in addition to working for the UN doing translations - is having an extramarital affair, discovers where David lives and turns up with the excuse of admiring some of his paintings.

What Steven doesn't know is that in reality David is not a painter at all but simply a petty thief who specialises in cheating older, wealthy ladies out of their possessions, a kind of "gigolo", and what he knows about his part in arousing the compassion of the so-called fairer sex he learned not in any workshop or academy but during his long period in prison.

Steven discovers through the detective everything about David's past and believes that he is the right person to carry out his plan since, among other things, he has an urgent need to get hold of Emily's immense fortune, because in fact he has serious financial problems that he keeps hidden from his wife.

In principle, David accepts Steven's proposal in exchange for a payment of 500,000 dollars, of which 100,000 in advance.

To create the perfect alibi, on the night of the murder, Steven goes to play poker at a club with some friends. However, having accepted the assignment, he is not brave enough to carry it out and sends an ex-convict he met while in prison instead.

However, the plan doesn't go exactly as Steven had planned. Emily fights back and manages to kill her assailant. When Steven returns and sees his wife covered in blood (she had phoned him to tell him what had happened) and the bloody corpse on the floor, he thinks that it is in fact David and without a second thought he slips his house key into one of his assailant's pockets.

As the police begin their investigations and discover the true identity of the dead assailant, Steven contacts David and announces that he will not pay him the remaining $400,000 because he has not completed the job, in fact he has not completed it because his wife is still alive.

However, David has taken precautions and has recorded the agreement between them so that he can blackmail him in the future if things go wrong. And the current situation suits him just fine.

Steven meanwhile tries to reconcile with his wife who admits her guilt and promises not to betray him anymore and decides to pay the rest of the 4000.000 dollars to David, although he has devised a plan to get rid of such a dangerous testimony. As David is about to board the train and leave New York forever, Steven, who has hidden in one of the station toilets, attacks him with a knife and stabs him in the stomach to recover the money, but discovers that David has sent a copy of the recording to Emily's house.

Meanwhile Emily, who is becoming suspicious of both of them given the bizarre circumstances surrounding her assault, discovers David's true identity, and her husband's serious financial problems, linking them to some incidents that have taken place in recent years prior to the planning of the "perfect crime". In an attempt to further clarify the situation, she goes to where her assailant used to live.

Meanwhile Steven returns home unsure of what attitude to take towards his wife, when he discovers that fortune is smiling on him as in her absence the envelope David had sent him with the recording has still not been opened and he hides it in the safe and goes to take a shower to relax and deal with the situation calmly when his wife returns.

Meanwhile Emily returns, and knowing the combination to the safe (which is actually the date of their marriage), opens it and listens to the recording; she then pretends to go and order food for dinner, so that the husband goes out to find Emily's house key (hidden under a pipe near the back door) and discovers it.

At this point in the situation there is nothing left but to uncover the letters and Emily confronts him, revealing that she has discovered everything, after which she tries to leave but Steven blocks her. They struggle with each other and Emily reacts by managing to disengage and when Steven attacks her again she pulls out of her bag a small pistol that she always carries with her and wounds him in the arm.

Steven has no choice but to try to kill her but Emily defends herself by shooting him twice in the chest, killing him.

When Detective Karaman arrives, the young widow tells him the whole story, even letting him listen to the macabre recording.

Five years earlier, director Andrew Davis had successfully updated the TV series "The Fugitive" in his film adaptation starring Harrison Ford.

"A Perfect Murder" is, of course, a long way from the mastery of Hitchcock's unsurpassed work, but at least it offers a modernised narrative, sustained with a good pulse and tight performances.

It is evident that what in Alfred Hitchcock's film was a prodigy of millimetric tension with close-ups filmed with his usual mastery here remains a somewhat sexualised modern intrigue, like all cinematic works in which Michael Douglas takes part, seeming to be a trademark.

Nonetheless, the cold atmosphere updated to the high levels of international finance is skilfully drawn and to some extent respects the original idea in Frederick Knott's work.

Perhaps the biggest criticism that can be made is the lack of suspense so characteristic of Hitchcock's films, especially those that have not been coloured and are still in black and white.

Either way it is a good entertainment and the negative criticism from the specialised press has been somewhat exaggerated.

384.-Reseña-pelicula-Asesinato perfecto-1.png

This film deserves a chance to be seen, although if it compares too closely to Hitchcok's film, it has everything to lose.

The people doing V2K with remote neural monitoring want me to believe this lady @battleaxe is an operator. She is involved deeply with her group and @fyrstikken . Her discord is Battleaxe#1003. I cant prove she is the one directly doing the V2K and RNM. Doing it requires more than one person at the least. It cant be done alone. She cant prove she is not one of the ones doing it. I was drugged in my home covertly, it ended badly. They have tried to kill me and are still trying to kill me. I bet nobody does anything at all. Ask @battleaxe to prove it. I bet she wont. They want me to believe the V2K and RNM in me is being broadcast from her location. And what the fuck is "HOMELAND SECURITY" doing about this shit? I think stumbling over their own dicks maybe? Just like they did and are doing with the Havana Syndrome.

They are reckless and should have shown the proper media what they had before taking me hostage for 5 years.

What would you say while having a gun pointed at your head from an undisclosed location? Have people find it? My hands are tied while they play like children with a gun to my head. Its a terrorist act on American soil while some yawn and say its not real or Im a mental case. Many know its real. This is an ignored detrimental to humanity domestic threat. Ask informed soldiers in the American military what their oath is and tell them about the day you asked me why. Nobody has I guess. Maybe someone told ill informed soldiers they cant protect America from military leaders in control with ill intent. How do we protect locked up soldiers from telling the truth? https://ecency.com/fyrstikken/@fairandbalanced/i-am-the-only-motherfucker-on-the-internet-pointing-to-a-direct-source-for-voice-to-skull-electronic-terrorism

I can't think of a Viggo Mortenssen or Michael Douglas movie I didn't like, so I'll definitely put this one on my must-watch list.

Viggo Mortenssen is a good actor, maybe the one I liked the most is The Road, very well filmed with a great direction. Michael Douglas has alternated good and bad but as he gets older he gets better and better (it's like wine).

Greetings and thanks for commenting @shortshots.

The Road is a great movie. I also enjoyed the book as well. Cormac McCarthy's punctuation-minimal style is interesting, very bare-bones writing. I also enjoyed Viggo Mortenssen in Eastern Promises and A History of Violence. Michael Douglas reminds me of an older time when the movie industry was either more risk taking or more experimental. Thank you. It was nice to read another great post
