SERIES REVIEW - Taboo excellent setting and mystery in England in the early eighteenth century. [ENG] / Taboo excelente ambientación y misterio en Inglaterra a inicios del siglo XVIII. [ESP]

Taboo was originally released by BBC One 5 years ago, but when it came to Netflix in 2022 it became one of their biggest hits. / Taboo fue estrenada originalmente por la BBC One hace 5 años, pero cuando llegó a Netflix en 2022 se convirtió en uno de sus grandes éxitos.

I just finished watching the first season (or maybe the only season of Taboo) because lead actor Tom Hardy announced last week the cancellation of the series.

Actually the series is not new as it was released in 2017 and did not arouse much interest. When it was reproposed in streaming it became one of the most watched series.

It has some resemblance from the visual and characterization of the characters with Peaky Blinders (not in vain they have the same creator), that gloomy atmosphere that replaces the docks of Birmingham with a London as dark as the same Gothic city, where the sun is almost never seen and the characters circulate in the midst of rain, fog and a sky as leaden as the soul of the protagonists.

Its photography is also very similar to the series Vikings, which apparently can mark a before and after in this type of series filmed outdoors, in external and natural landscapes and with very little internal decoration.

Dirty characters, without moral codes where gwnuine love is mixed with incest, goodness with the most absolute evil, aberrant crime with justice carried out by the protagonists' own hand.

Despite the announcement of the cancellation of the series, everything seemed to indicate at the end of the eighth chapter that Taboo ended there. The death of several of its main characters and the sailing ship that sails aimlessly (apparently it was supposed to go to the American coasts to join the American fleet in its fight with England for the possession of a bay near Vancouver, gateway to traffic with the East Indies) but that Delaney surreptitiously makes it clear that they will head for the Azores with the stolen gunpowder cargo, suggests that the plot will not be able to go much further.

On the other hand, it is an excellent ending that goes beyond the concept of justice and injustice, it is the struggle of a man in which the respect for the law goes through himself and the sense he gives to it: a code of conduct based on his own interests and the absolute loyalty of his men and closest people.

The series was originally created and broadcast in 2017 by the BBC but then the rights were acquired by different streaming platforms that in turn were rebroadcasting it (the last one was NetFlix) managing to reach a massive audience worldwide and giving it the popularity it has acquired.

Tom Hardy (he also plays the main protagonist in a great way) and his father Chips Hardy are the producers of Taboo.

The East India Company was founded in 1600 to end the Danish monopoly and its power was so great that it was nicknamed the Monster of Leadenhall - the name of the street where the company's headquarters was located. / La Compañía de las Indias fue fundada en el 1600 para acabar con el monopolio danés y su poder fue tan grande al punto de ser apodada el Monstruo de Leadenhall -el nombre de la calle donde estaba la sede central de la sociedad-

Acabo de terminar de ver la primera temporada (o tal la única de Taboo) porque el actor principal Tom Hardy ha anunciado la semana pasada la cancelación de la serie.

En realidad la serie no es nueva ya que due estrenada en el 2017 y no despertó mayor interés. Al ser repropuesta en streaming pasó a ser una de las series más vistas.

Tiene algo de parecido desde lo visual y la caracterización de los personajes con Peaky Blinders (no en vano tienen el mismo creador), esa atmósfera sombría que substituye los muelles de Birmingham con una Londres tan oscura como la misma ciudad gótica, donde no se ve casi nunca el sol y los personajes circulan en medio de la llucia, la niebla y un cielo tan plomizo como el alma de los protagonistas.

Su fotografía tiene mucho de parecido también con la serie Vikings lo que aparentemente puede marcar un antes y un después en este tipo de series filmadas al aire libre, en paisajes externos y naturales y con una muy escasa decoración interna.

Personajes sucios, sin códigos morales donde se mezclan el amor gwnuino con el incesto, la bondad con la maldad más absoluto, el crimen aberrante con la justicia llevada a cabo por propia mano de los protagonistas.

No obstante el anuncio de la cancelación de la serie todo parecía indicar al final del octavo capítulo que Taboo terminaba ahí. La muerte de varios de sus principales personajes y el velero que navega sin rumbo (aparentemente debía trasladarse hasta las costas norteamericanas para unirse a la flota de aquél país en su lucha con Inglaterra por la posesión de una bahía cercana a Vancouver puerta de ingreso al tráfico con las Indias Orientales) pero que subrepticiamente Delaney hace entender que se dirigirán hacia las Azores con el cargo de pólvora robado hace presuponer que el argumento no podrá ir mucho más allá.

Por otro lado es un excelente final que va más allá del concepto de justicia e injusticia, es la lucha de un hombre en el cuál el respeto de la ley pasa por él mismo y por el sentido que le da a la misma: un código de conducta basado en sus propios intereses y en la fidelidad absoluta de sus hombres y personas más cercanas.

La serie originalmente fue creada y transmitida en el 2017 por la BBC pero luego los derechos fueron adquiridos por distintas plataformas de streaming que a su vez la fueron retransmitiendo (la última fue NetFlix) logrando alcanzar un público masivo en todo el mundo y dándole la popularidad que ha adquirido.

Tom Hardy (interpreta tambián al principal protagonista en forma estupenda) y su padre Chips Hardy son los productores de Taboo.

The series has certain flashes of a rare quality and constant metaphors: one of them is when James enters the morgue where the body of his father is and recovers the two coins with which it was customary at that time to cover the eyes of death, and then deposit them as offerings at the funeral.

On the other hand, it mixes many real facts such as the existence of Nutka Bay (which James' father owned), a small coastal island off the southwest coast of Vancouver Island, currently belonging to the province of British Columbia (Canada) and in the early eighteenth century a source of controversy over its sovereignty as it represented not only a possible point of attack or defense in the war between Britain and the U.S.A., but also represented, especially in the early eighteenth century, an important point of defense in the war between the U.S.A. and Great Britain. It represented, especially for the East India Company, a strategic base for the development of maritime commerce, of which it aspired to hold an absolute monopoly in all the seas of the world.

James Delaney spends several years in Africa before returning to London and comes into possession of a remarkable amount of diamonds, gold and precious stones with which he begins to fight against the immense resources of the East India Company. But he must also fight against his own demons and hallucinations, pagan rituals performed in a strange language (Twi which is a dialect of Ghana), spells performed in water and other paranormal phenomena such as hearing the dead sing, especially those who are affectionately close to him.

The images and photography reflect a bleak and hallucinatory world where there is no room for (good) feelings and everything is reduced to a fierce struggle to survive and retain power.

The Prince Regent is a pusillanimous and extravagant being, possessing all the vices that a spoiled sovereign can have and maintains with the East India Company a love-hate, friend-enemy relationship that is conditioned by the enormous power of both: political that of the English Crown, economic that of the Company.

Rarely in a film or series has the Company been depicted in a way so close to reality: among the mud of a dirty, smelly and criminal London, the figure of the Company emerges, omnipotent in its power and arrogance, with an infinite number of spies -surpassing in number the Crown-, hired assassins, corrupt members of parliament, master and mistress of the lives of Londoners as in the Middle Ages.

The series develops through the intrigues between the two sides and the war has several fronts: on one side the American agents -and some who pretend to be American agents but in reality work for the Company-, on the other side with an ambiguity characteristic of their own power the powerful company of the Eastern Isles led by Sir Stuart Strange who supports the British Crown but at the same time tries to take control of the maritime control of the Pacific route. And in the midst of them James Delaney who, in order to prevent the island from being seized by the Crown (he is imprisoned and tortured), makes an agreement with a supposed American agent to supply gunpowder to the American forces.

In the middle of the plot he discovers that his mother had not been put in an asylum by his father arbitrarily but because she was not really sane in her mind and on more than one occasion had tried to drown him as a child. These and other circumstances about his life, either when he was a child or during his long stay in Africa, are told to him by the butler of his house, to which is later added a legal wife of his father -when he was already old- who now claims her rights to the inheritance.

Among intrigues, murders, impossible and incestuous loves, and a London where delinquency, bribery, prostitution and crime in general prevail, Delaney is dragging his figure in the mud leaving behind him a trail of dead and disappearances of which no one notices the subsequent absence and, what is worse, no one seems to care about anything.

Everything seemed to indicate a second season based on the events of the first until the statements of its main protagonist and producer.

La trama nos sitúa en Londres a inicios de 1800 cuando James Keziah Delaney (interpretado por Tom Hardy) recupera de un escondite los diamantes que se ha traído robados (desde Africa) y comienza a desarrollar su plan que mezcla la venganza hacia la Compañia de las Indias Orientales que le arrebató la propiedad naviera su padre y que casi provoca su propia muerte cuando hace hundir un buque mercante cargado de esclavos (ilegal en esa época) con destino a una plantación en las Antillas (que después se descubre es propiedad del hermano del presidente de la Compañía Sir Stuart Strange (excelente interpretación de Jonathan Pryce), en el que él mismo viajaba como integrante de la tripulación resultando el único sobreviviente del naufragio cometido ex-profeso para ocultar las pruebas del delito de que podía ser acusada la Compañia ante el Principe Regente Jorge IV (estupendamente caracterizado por Mark Gatiss) de la Corona inglesa.

En realidad el primer paso que hace James es presenciar el funeral de su padre que ha muerto en circunstancias misteriosas (luego se descubre que en realidad ha sido envenenado con arsénico por su propio criado para evitarle inútiles sufrimientos).

La serie tiene ciertos destellos de una rara calidad y constantes metáforas: una de ellas es cuando James entra en la morgue donde está el cuerpo de su padre y recupera las dos monedas con que en esa época era habitual cubrir los ojos del muerte, para luego depositarlas como ofrendas en el mismo funeral.

Por otro lado mezcla muchos datos reales como la existencia de la bahía de Nutka (de la cuál era propietario el padre de James) una pequeña isla costera de la costa suroccidental de la isla de Vancouver, en la actualidad perteneciente a la provincia de la Columbia Británica (Canadá) y a inicios del siglo XVIII fuente de controversias sobre su soberanía ya que representaba no solo un posible punto de ataque o defensa en la guerra entre Gran Bretaña y los EE. UU. sino que representaba, especialmente para la Compañia de las Indias Orientales, una base estratégica para el desarrollo de comercio marítimo, del cuál aspiraba a detener el monopolio absoluto en todos los mares del mundo.

James Delaney pasa varios años en Africa antes de regresar a Londres y entra en posesión de una notable cantidad de diamantes, oro y piedras preciosas riqueza con la cuál comienza a combatir contra los recursos inmensos de la Compañia. Pero también debe luchar contra sus propios demonios y alucinaciones, rituales paganos celebrados en una lengua extraña (el twi que es un dialecto de Ghana), hechizos celebrados en el agua y otros fenómenos paranormales como escuchar cantar a los muertos, especialmente aquellos que afectivamente le están cerca.

Las imágenes y la fotografía reflejan un mundo sombrío y alucinante donde no hay lugar para los sentimientos (buenos) y toda se reduce a una feroz lucha por sobrevivir y conservar el poder.

El Príncipe Regente es un ser pusilánime y extravangante, poseedor de todos los vicios que puede tener un consentido soberano y mantiene con la Compañia de las Indias orientales una relación de amor-odio, amigo-enemigo que está condicionada por el enorme poder de ambos: político el de la Corona Inglesa, económico el de la Compañia.

Pocas veces en una película o serie la Compañia ha sido descripta en un modo tan cercano a la realidad: entre el barro de una Londres sucia, maloliente y delictiva se emerge la figura de la Compañia omnipotente en su poder y arrogancia, con un infinito número de espías -superior en número al de la Corona-, asesinos a sueldo, integrantes del parlamento corruptos, dueña y señora de la vida de los londinenses como en el Medioevo.

La serie se va desarrollando a través de las intrigas entre ambos bandos y la guerra tiene varios frentes: por un lado los agentes estadounidenses -y algunos que simulan serlo pero que en realidad trabajan para la Compañía-, por el otro lado con una ambiguedad característica de su propio poder la poderosa compañía de las Islas Orientales liderada por Sir Stuart Strange que apoya la Corona Británica pero a su vez trata de adueñarse del control marítimo en la ruta del Pacífico. Y en medio de ellos James Delaney quien para evitar que la isla le sea substraída por la Corona (es encarcelado y sometido a torturas) llega a hacer un acuerdo con un supuesto agente estadounidense para proveer de pólvora a las fuerzas americanas.

En el medio de la trama descubre que su madre no había sido internada en un manicomio por su padre en forma arbitraria sino porque realmente no era sana de mente y en más d euna oportunidad había tratado de ahogarlo de pequeño. Estas y otras circunstancias sobre su vida, ya sea cuando era pequeño o durante su larga estadía en Africa, le son contadas por el mayordomo de su casa, a la cuál posteriormente se agrega una esposa legal de su padre -cuando ya era anciano- que reclama ahora sus derechos a la herencia.

Entre intrigas, asesinatos, amores imposibles e incestuosos, y una Londres donde priva la delincuenta, el soborno, la prostitución y el delito en general, Delaney va arrastrando su figura en medio al barro dejando detrás de si una estela de muertos y desapariciones de los cuáles ninguno advertir la posterior ausencia y, lo que es peor, a ninguno parece importarle nada.

Todo parecía indicar una segunda temporada basada en el suceso de la primera hasta las declaraciones de su principal protagonista y productor.
