On my last visit to Berlin I had the opportunity to see several graffiti artists beautifying the walls of the German capital. I had the opportunity to talk to some of them, all from different parts of the world, and they allowed me to take some pictures.

Being used to live for many years in Italy where these artists are quite persecuted by the police who apply severe fines if they don't have a regular permission from the owner of those walls or the local municipality, and therefore many of them work at night on walls and walls of abandoned buildings, I was surprised by the freedom they have to work their art in the German capital.

Nobody bothers them, the police pass by and watch but without intervening, and all the work takes place in a peaceful and tolerant coexistence, a concept of life that not all societies have the strength and courage to integrate into their daily lives. Many Berliners pass by indifferently, while others stop to look at the paintings and make comments. All in an atmosphere of mutual respect between artists and passers-by.

In Berlin, as in other European capitals, there are many abandoned buildings - usually former factories that have closed their doors and moved to Asian countries where they enjoy much more favourable economic and financial conditions - especially for German companies that in their country of origin have to pay very high taxes and their products are subjected to very high quality controls - which are used with total discretion by the graffiti artists.

In this way they avoid the constant, slow and gradual deterioration of the walls as they are first treated with a base to level the surfaces before proceeding to develop their works. Ladders in the form of ladders, some with aerosols, others with stipple jars, it is a continuous coming and going of real teams of painters, each one with his favourite theme. At the end of the day, it is incredible to see this abandoned and dirty wall in the morning transformed at the end of the day into a real work of street art, with a multiplicity and vivacity of colours that astound the passer-by, especially those who walk this route every day.

367.-where is 107 011.jpg

367.-where is 107 040.jpg

This street art was born in the USA, more precisely in New York in the seventies and shortly after it moved to Berlin, Germany, which was one of the first European capitals to welcome - and promote - a type of art that in many other cities was forbidden, either because of the subject matter of the works or because the painters "took possession" of a wall without asking anyone's permission and began to paint it. Instead of considering it a work of art, those responsible for urban care in many cities began to interpret it as an anarchic way of painting other people's property without permission. And all sorts of prohibitions began to be enforced.

367.-where is 107 034.jpg

367.-where is 107 044.jpg

After the fall of the wall this incipient art quickly expanded to form the so-called East Side Gallery, an international monument to freedom and the largest section of the Berlin Wall remaining in its original position, but also many new paintings and graffiti, from this kind of cultural impulse supported and promoted by Berlin's own local government, were added to the wall on its eastern side, constituting in a way a kind of map of the historical and political changes occurring not only in Germany but also in Europe as a whole.

367.-where is 107 031.jpg

367.-where is 107 024.jpg

German reunification contributed greatly to the development of this art, and even a part of the wall dividing Bonn and Berlin was not torn down but left standing so that artists from all over the world could show their street art in solidarity with the German people, as a way of breaking down the barriers between all the peoples of the world. Even when reunification was already talked about but not yet effective, French artist Thierry Noir was the first graffiti artist to paint a mural on the wall that still divided the two cities and was guarded by guards, five years before the momentous German reunification.

367.-where is 107 046.jpg

367.-where is 107 030.jpg

For this reason Berlin came to be called - and is still called - the European capital of graffiti and street art, which can be admired walking down any street where artists from all corners of the globe have left their mark, with the most disparate themes, from the clearly political to art, culture, film, music and the environment, among others.

367.-where is 107 030.jpg

All the paintings have something special about them that reminds us not only of the horrors of a past that must not return, but also of the beauty of art itself.

Hello @greengalletti. It's truly a great privilege to be in the presence of the iconic Berlin wall. Although that landmark is a strong reminder of Germany's tragic history, the artistic murals, graffiti, and paintings that decorate its surfaces surely helped in neutralizing the excruciating pains of the past. There's a sense of peace, freedom, and assurance of a brighter future with the proliferation of beautiful creations of art and architecture. Awesome post! 😊

Indeed @storiesoferne, the part of the wall that was left standing had that objective: that artists from all over the world could reflect their art and their struggle for a better society, not only politically but also socially, culturally, artistically and environmentally.

And the graffiti artists, those who have made Street Art a culture, found an excellent element where they could demonstrate the value of their work.

Thank you for commenting.
