[ENG/ESP] Going back to the places of my adolescence and youth: Salento (Italy).
A few months before the Covid pandemic broke out all over the world, I had the opportunity to return to Italy and visit my favorite places in my childhood, adolescence and youth.
And one of them is Salento. Countless in my memories, as if time had not passed.
Salento is not an Italian region in the strict sense of the word, but it is as if it were.
The Italian peninsula is divided into regions (not in the geographical sense but with perfectly identifiable political divisions) something like the Communities in Spain, into provinces and municipalities.
Salento occupies the southernmost part of Apulia, what we commonly define as "the heel of Italy" since in fact the European country resembles a boot. It is not for nothing that the Italians themselves affectionately call it "Lo Stivale", which means boot.
Its natural beauty is framed by two seas, the Ionian and the Adriatic, between which it is located.
Immersed in the green of centuries-old olive groves, tobacco and vineyards in Salento, the sea acquires another dimension and all the shades of blue highlighting the characteristic white of the houses of the Arab villages - in ancient times numerous populations of that nationality settled here - each with its own dialect, customs and traditions.
These cultural, environmental and historical characteristics have only increased the tourist offer of Salento, which has established itself over the years as one of the most environmentally responsible and quality tourism destinations in Italy, constituting a valid alternative to the classic destinations of summer mass tourism.
At night it is common to vibrate to the rhythm of the notes of the pizzica, with the fervor and popular enthusiasm of dances that last until the wee hours of the morning.
The entire coastline, of incredible and unforgettable natural beauty, has high and steep rocks, dotted with caves, coves and inlets where you can practice various water sports. And, of course, take a refreshing dip.
Salento is one of the Italian geographical regions where art, history and the natural beauty of its territory are best combined.
Natural reserves, lakes rich in fish, the endless extension of small beaches up to the Capo di Leuca with its imposing lighthouse that watches over the return of sailors, the landscapes, the Adriatic Sea until reaching the coasts of the Ionian Sea where the tropical climate, a sign that we are approaching the African coasts, makes itself felt. A vast expanse of tropical beaches marked by the bright red of a sun that reminds us of other latitudes.
And in the midst of all this "naturalistic scenery" is the Salento of art, with monuments and cathedrals of great prestige that rise in its territory as testimonies of a past with great artistic and historical value: the menhirs, dolmens and crypts. An incredible artistic and monumental heritage, many of them recognized as World Heritage by UNESCO.
For the many aspects it contains, natural, artistic, gastronomic (the scorpion fish and seafood soup is a real treat), Salento is a strip of land embedded within Apulia that must be discovered slowly, to give the visitor time to seek and observe many hidden aspects of its territory.
The vast coastlines of this wonderful land continue to surprise us and in one of them we can enjoy a unique spectacle in Melpignano: the Night of the Taranta, a classic southern Italian event.

I love Italy. It´s probably one of the best countries close to Germany with good food, nice beaches, beautiful water, and friendly / family friendly people. I just wish there were not so many Germans there like us 🙃😉
