The vast territory composed of hills and low mountains belonging to the chain of the Apennine Mountains that runs through the entire Italian territory from north to south, located behind Savona, which lies between the Ligurian Sea - part of the Mediterranean Sea - and the so-called Lower Piedmont, is commonly known as the Bormida Valley or the Val Bormida.

This territory is crossed by three rivers that are actually one (which gives the valley its name) and its main tributaries: the Bormida river.

Of all its tributaries, the main one is the Millesimo Bormida, followed by the Pallare and the Mallare Bormida.

The progressive union of its courses will form the Bormida river proper, which continues its course in Piedmont until it flows into the Tanaro near the city of Alessandria.

The other important mountain range in Italy is the Alps, which serve as a border with neighboring countries such as France, Austria, Croatia and Switzerland.

The so-called Cadibona Pass, especially at the height of Altare, before entering the gallery, which conventionally indicates the boundary between the Apennines and the Alps, marks the entrance to the Bomida Valley, and at the same time acts as a watershed between the coastal area and the hinterland.

From here a wide phytogeographic area develops, characterized by an exceptional forest heritage and a great variety of environments; from peaceful hilly landscapes at about 4/500 m to mountainous environments with elevations above 1000 m.

The vegetation is varied and is characterized by the presence of beech, chestnut, oak and oak trees and the end result is a bright contrast between the colors of the vegetation and the gray of the ravines, with striking chromatic contrasts.

The landscape is of the mountainous type but with different characteristics, on the one hand the gentle hilly landscapes at 400-500 meters above sea level up to mountainous environments with elevations of over 1000 meters.

There are some industrial settlements on the valley floor, especially in the area of Altare and Cairo Montenotte but also next to them there are many areas of naturalistic value that have preserved intact their wild beauty.

This makes it possible to reach reserves and protected natural areas easily by car or, even better, on foot or by mountain bike, thanks to the network of trails that link them.

Bormida is one of the smallest municipalities in the region but one of the richest in nature, since 96% of its territory is made up of valuable chestnut and beech forests.
