[ENG/ESP] A walk through the German capital some time ago. / Un caminata por la capital de Alemania tiempo atrás.

On other occasions I have told you about my tourist forays - if you can call them that - back when I lived in Europe.

My favourite destinations were Italy, Spain, England, Germany and the Netherlands.

En otras oportunidades les he comentado mis incursiones turisticas -si así pueden llamarse- tiempo atrás cuando residía en Europa.

Mis destinos preferidos eran Italia, España, Inglaterra, Alemania y Países Bajos.

From Germany I have already told you in other posts and in other communities about my artistic tours through halls, exhibitions, buildings and public monuments that tell the history of Germany from many centuries ago, passing through the war and the traces it has left, some of which still remain to freshen the memory of all humanity, such as some pieces of the old Wall that some artists have used to express their art and their feelings.

Today I want to tell you about an everyday walk, which could be on a Wednesday or any other day of the week, through the streets of Berlin.

De Alemania ya les he contado en otrtos posts y en otras comunidades mis recorridos artísticos por salas, exposiciones, edificios y monumentos públicos que cuentan la historia de Alemania de hace muchos siglos atrás, pasando por la guerra y las huellas que ha dejado, algunas de las cuáles aún quedan para frescar la memoria de toda la humanidad, como algunos trozos del antiguo Muro que algunos artistas han aprovechado para expresar su arte y sus sentimientos.

Hoy quiero hablarles de un paseo cotidiano, que puede ser un miércoles o cualquier otro de la semana por las calles berlinesas.

I had made the reservation from Italy and when we arrived we were surprised to find that there was no one waiting for us.

With the usual German precision, the travel agency where we had paid for the days' accommodation had given us a code online.

Había hecho la reserva desde Italia y cuando llegamos nos encontramos con la sorpresa que no había nadie esperándonos.

Con la precisión habitual alemana la agencia de viajes en que habíamos pagado los días de alojamiento nos había dado online un código.

We typed the code into a panel and the doors opened: Open Sesame as in the story of Ali Baba and the 40 thieves and the doors opened. The same code could be used to open the door of the flat.

When I see and remember all these things I think that also the unemployment in Europe has its reasons. The automation of many aspects of business and everyday life has meant that many people have been replaced by these long-term, economic, always-working mechanisms that have no rest days, sick leave, holidays or redundancy leave.

Digitamos el código en un panel y las puertas se aprieron: Abrete Sésamo como en el cuento de Ali Babá y los 40 ladrones y las puertas se abrieron. El mismo código era utilizable para abrir la puerta del departamento.

Cuando veo y recuerdo todas estas cosas pienso que también la desocupación en Europa tiene sus motivos. La automatización de muchos aspectos de la vida comercial y cotidiana ha hecho que muchas personas sean substuídas por estos mecanismos, económicos a largo plazo, siempre funcionantes que no tienen días de descanso, reposos por enfermedad, vacaciones o licencias por despido.

So-called "robots" do all the work of human beings without asking for anything in return except a little maintenance from time to time, but at what cost to the labour market?

Many European cities are suffering from this problem. Automated motorways, automated supermarket checkouts and robotic systems everywhere, in the big car industries, in the big hotels and in commerce in general.

Los llamados "robots" hacen todo el trabajo del ser humano sin pedir nada a cambio, salvo una pequeña mantención de vez en cuando, pero a qué precio para el mercado laboral?

Muchas ciudades europeas está sufriendo este problema. Autopistas automatizadas, cajas de supermercados automatizadas y sistemas robotizados por todos lados, en las grandes industrias automovilísticas, en los grandes hoteles y en el comercio en general.

And people queuing up at unemployment offices looking for a job or waiting to collect their unemployment cheque.

Unlike other European capitals, Berlin does not have a proper "art quarter" like Barcelona, Rome or Paris, to mention only the most notorious examples.

Y la gente haciendo cola en las oficinas de desocupación buscando un trabajo o esperando para retirar el cheque de desempleo.

A diferencia de otras capitales europeas Berlín no tiene un "barrio artístico" propiamente dicho como Barceloma, Roma o París por citar solo los ejemplos más notorios.

After visiting the ruins of the former Berlin Wall, the Brandenburg Gate, the symbol of German power, the Reichstag, the icon of Nazi power during Hitler's rule, and other historical monuments, the only thing left to do is to walk the streets of Berlin.

An unhurried and leisurely stroll through window shopping, discovering new aspects of a city that, although monotonous, always has angles to discover.

Where you hardly notice any faults. Traffic regulation is perfect. Trains run on schedule. The gastronomic establishments have chairs and tables for two, three, four people, as if they were personalised.

When, by mistake, the two of us sat at a table for four, the waiter immediately came to point out our mistake and gently invited us to sit at a place reserved for two people.

Every space must be used in the right measure, excesses and waste are not allowed.

The gigantic Berlin bear is everywhere. At the entrance of hotels, in arcades and sometimes in the middle of the streets, in the central avenues, on flags, shields, statues and logos of all kinds.

Cada espacio debe ser utilizado en su justa medida, los excesos y el despilfarro no está permitido.

El gigantesco oso berlinés está presente por todos lados. A la entrada de los hoteles, en las salas de juegos y a veces en medio de las calles, en las avenidas centrales, en las banderas, en los escudos, en estatuas y logotipos de toda indole.

We asked around and were given several explanations as to why the bear is the symbol of Berlin.

The most coherent one has ancient origins as it appeared on the banners and coats of arms of many German nobles as a form of loyalty - in their capacity as vassals - to Duke Albert I - a native of Bradenburg, the region where Berlin is located and an illustrious figure in the colonisation of the entire German empire.

Trying to invent a mascot to identify the city, in 2001 two German entrepreneurs Eva and Klaus Herlitz created the bear sculpture and named it Buddy Bear.

Preguntamos y nos dieron varias explicaciones de por qué el oso es el símbolo de Berlín.

La más coherente tiene orígenes remotos ya que aparecía en los estandartes y escudos de armas de muchos nobles alemanes como una forma de fidelidad -en su calidad de vasallos- al duque Alberto I —nativo de Bradenburgo la región donde está Berlín y figura ilustre en la colonización de todo el imperio alemán.

Tratando de inventar una mascota que identificara a la ciudad en el año 2001 dos empresarios alemanes Eva y Klaus Herlitz crearon la escultura del oso y la llamaron Buddy Bear (Oso Amigo).
