[ENG] Architectural details of the interior of the cathedral of Savona, Italy. [ESP]

The new cathedral of Savona (actually "new" is a euphemism, a manner of speaking, as the old building was demolished along with other historic buildings when the city was invaded in the early 15th century by Genoese troops who built an imposing military fortress in the city in the settlement now called El Priamar). At that time the whole area of what is now Liguria near the border with France was ruled by the Marinara Republic, as the Republic of Genoa was called, which divided up the whole of Italy with the Regno di Napoli (the Kingdom of Naples) ruling the south and the Austro-Hungarian Empire being the owner and patron of the north, that Italian north which was only restored to it after the Second World War.

A century later the church - and we are already talking about the 17th century when Savona was a fortified city and all the buildings inside it were built in order to repel the invaders - usually pirates coming from the African coasts through the Mediterranean Sea, for example the Torretta - a tower whose only purpose was to watch over the sea - was partly restored and at the beginning of the 19th century its construction was completed with the bell tower, which is located on the right side of today's cathedral and reflects an architectural style totally different from the rest.

The church is divided into three parts with a surface area of over 2,000 square metres and a Latin cross plan divided into three naves, and the works of art inside are numerous, a characteristic and identifying feature of all churches in Italy. The high altar is one of the oldest parts of the cathedral and dates back to the end of the 17th century, while in the side aisle there are several chapels and frescoes by various artists - including the Savonese painter Coghetti - depicting Jesus in the biblical metaphor of the Bible driving the merchants out of the temple, the Virgin Mary with child surrounded by angels, the Sacred Heart of Jesus and various apostles, works belonging to Ratti, another of the most famous Savonese painters of the 17th century.

On a curious note, you can see a medieval fresco by an unknown author that was detached from the wall at the beginning of the 16th century from a column of the old church of San Francisco - which at that time was the cathedral - and which miraculously remained intact from the part of the religious building that was being demolished and yet was preserved intact, being for that reason an object of worship and religious veneration.

The cathedral of Savona has, internally and externally, the typical and characteristic architectural style of the religious buildings of the so-called Counter-Reformation (or Catholic Reformation, which was the Catholic Church's response to the Protestant Reformation led by Martin Luther, the German theologian and scholar who laid the foundations of today's Protestant Church), and departs from the harmony collected from the Renaissance models present in so many other Italian churches and cathedrals, not only in its vast proportions but also in its general gravity.

The interior of the Savona cathedral is amazing with many details that give it a great elegance, despite the history of destruction and construction that surrounds it. Greetings @greengalletti and blessings.

Thank you for commenting. It is true that Italy at that time was divided into several parts (Naples, Sardinia, Genoa, the north in the hands of the Austro-Hungarian Empire) and whoever did not submit had to deal with the invader.

Some cities were directly fortified and Savona (where I lived for more than ten years) was one of them.

Greetings @sorprendente.
