I don't have anything new today

unfortunately, but it's Wednesday, so we can go with the 'Wayback Wednesday' theme and share a bit of an older tune. I decided to go back into my Youtube, rather than just an older Soundcloud post, and picked this out, one of the first little Syntakt jams I made when I first got the device earlier in the summer. I didn't have the Syntakt hooked up to anything else yet at this point, and watching these older videos reminds me how fun it can be to just use a single device; the limitations can result in interesting ideas sometimes, and this one here still is pretty cool. There's some stuff I'd probably change in hindsight, and with more knowledge of the device, but overall I still dig it. Technically this idea is still on the device, maybe I'll try and revisit it, see if I can't fix it up and build some new things around it as well.

Watch to Syntakt Jam 2-1.2 here...

Hope you enjoy!

I keep looking at the Elektron range and I’m tempted by one of them, just not sure which one, synth or sample based? I tend to go more for synths when using other production tools and instruments.

The Digitakt/Octatrack are awesome, but yea if you aren't super sample-oriented in your workflow, may not find it as useful. They do have a lot of tracks available for midi control, which is nice if you've got other external gear, though the Syntakt now has that as well, in addition to the other synthesis tracks.

The Digitone and Syntakt are both awesome, and personally I think totally worth it, but definitely quite different. Digitone is 4 tracks total, which is a bit limiting, but you can get some incredible FM sounds out of it and there are sort of roundabout ways to layer more than 4 sounds. The Syntakt is probably the better 'starting' place, as it has 12 tracks, 8 Digital instrument, 4 Analog... it does digital drums, and all kinds of awesome synth stuff, plus can control midi. And, all of them now have song mode, which previously only the big boys had (octatrack, analog rytm, etc.). Allows you to map all your patterns, control track mutes, etc., so its super easy to make songs on them now.

Thanks for the details, they all sound brilliant and I may look at the Syntakt. I’ve no hardware gear as such apart from a Yamaha keyboard synth I’ve got. Most of what I do is entirely computer based, so it will be good to go do semi DAWless
