Hello, dear community! If you are a teacher, you surely know the satisfaction of seeing a student finally read a word confidently a word that once seemed impossible to them. And if you are a parent, you know the thrill of hearing your child discover the wonderful world of reading, step by step, right at home.

I was so focused on helping my 24 students progress through the wonderful process of learning to read that I forgot to document many of the tools we created along the way. Now that I have a little more time, I want to start sharing them, as I am convinced they can be incredibly useful for other teachers and for parents who want to support reading skills at home.

Today, I want to show you a simple, affordable, and highly effective strategy we call "The House of Sounds"

What is the House of Sounds?

The House of Sounds is a literacy strategy designed to strengthen the recognition of simple and complex sounds through short, consistent, and meaningful daily practice.

The main idea was for each student to have a small "house" where the sound they were currently learning at their own pace would "live." This allowed us to respect individual learning paths without comparing progress among classmates. Each child worked at the specific level they needed to strengthen.

Materials used

One of the advantages of this strategy is that it does not require expensive materials. It was possible to sustain it throughout the school year using very few resources.

The materials used were:
• Bond paper or poster board.
• Colored markers.
• Cardstock for making the cards.
• Scissors.
• Glue.
• Adhesive tape or laminating material (optional, for greater durability).
• Pencil and notebook for daily activities.

Using the bond paper, I created an eye-catching house-shaped display. On it, we placed a small card showing the specific sound each student needed to practice for the week or for however long was necessary.

Step-by-step strategy

The system was very simple, and that was precisely the key to its success.

First, I assessed each student's reading level to determine whether they needed to work on simple or complex sounds. Then, I gave each child the corresponding card featuring the sound they were working to master.

The daily activity was very specific: creating five words using that sound. The words were prepared at home with family support, and the following day, each student would go to the board to write and read them aloud to the class.

Five words might not seem like many, but that daily consistency ultimately led to significant learning.

School and family working as a single team

One of the greatest achievements of this strategy was involving families without turning the homework into a burden.

Since it involved only five words, parents could support the process in just a few minutes at the end of the day. Gradually, they became active participants in their children's learning, strengthening not only reading skills but also the children's confidence.

Even when a student missed class, the routine didn't stop. Upon returning the next day, they would already have their five words ready because they were thoroughly familiar with the activity. This ensured learning continuity despite school absences.

Learning while respecting each student's pace

Something I always championed throughout this process was the fact that not all children learn at the same rate.

While some students were already working on complex sounds like "br," "pl," "tr," "gue," or "gui," others were still reinforcing simpler sounds. Yet, everyone participated during the reading exercises on the board.

More advanced students practiced reading fluency, while those just starting out honed their listening skills by hearing new words every day. Without even realizing it, they were all learning from one another within the same space.

Mucho more than reading: strengthening pronunciation
As the weeks went by, I noticed a benefit I hadn't initially foreseen.

Reading aloud to the class daily began to noticeably improve many students' pronunciation. Constantly repeating sounds, listening to their classmates, and verbalizing words helped them build greater confidence in speaking.

Daily participation also reduced their fear of reading in public. Gradually, their nervousness faded as they realized the classroom was a safe space where making mistakes was simply part of the learning process.

When a card went missing, learning continued

As happens in any classroom, some cards inevitably got lost.
Far from being a problem, this actually confirmed that the strategy was working. The students remembered perfectly which sound they were working on, allowing them to continue practicing their five words at home without needing the physical card.
This demonstrated that learning no longer relied solely on the materials; the knowledge had begun to take root internally.

The results achieved

By the end of the school year, the progress made was clearly evident.

Consistent practice allowed students to significantly expand their vocabulary, improve sound recognition, strengthen their pronunciation, and boost their confidence when reading aloud.

Furthermore, this strategy fostered vital habits such as responsibility, task completion, organization, and a daily commitment to learning. What began as a simple five-word activity evolved into a routine that bridged school and home with a shared goal: learning to read with joy.

I am convinced that the most effective strategies are often not the most complex ones, but rather those that can be sustained over time. "The House of Sounds" was one such strategy, and I wanted to share it today in the hope that it might inspire other teachers, as well as families supporting the beautiful process of teaching reading at home.

¡Hola, querida comunidad! Si eres docente, seguramente sabes la satisfacción que se siente cuando un estudiante finalmente logra leer con seguridad una palabra que antes le parecía imposible. Y si eres padre o madre, conoces la emoción de escuchar a tu hijo descubrir el maravilloso mundo de la lectura, paso a paso, desde casa.

Estuve tan enfocada en lograr que mis 24 estudiantes avanzaran en el maravilloso proceso de aprender a leer que olvidé documentar muchas de las herramientas que fuimos construyendo durante el camino. Ahora que tengo un poco más de tiempo, quiero comenzar a compartirlas porque estoy convencida de que pueden ser de gran utilidad para otros docentes, así como para padres que desean fortalecer la lectura desde casa.

Hoy quiero mostrarles una estrategia sencilla, económica y muy efectiva que llamamos "La Casa de los Sonidos"

¿Qué es la Casa de los Sonidos?

La Casa de los Sonidos es una estrategia de alfabetización diseñada para fortalecer el reconocimiento de sonidos simples y complejos mediante una práctica diaria corta, constante y significativa.

La idea principal era que cada estudiante tuviera una pequeña "casa" donde viviría el sonido que estaba aprendiendo según su propio ritmo de aprendizaje. De esta manera respetábamos los procesos individuales sin comparar el avance entre compañeros. Cada niño trabajaba desde el nivel que realmente necesitaba fortalecer.

Materiales utilizados

Una de las ventajas de esta estrategia es que no requiere materiales costosos. Con muy pocos recursos fue posible mantenerla durante todo el año escolar.
Los materiales fueron:
• Papel bond o cartulina.
• Marcadores de colores.
• Cartulina para elaborar las fichas.
• Tijeras.
• Pegamento.
• Cinta adhesiva o plastificado (opcional para mayor duración).
• Lápiz y cuaderno para las actividades diarias.

Con el papel bond elaboré una fachada llamativa con forma de casa. En ella colocábamos una pequeña ficha donde aparecía el sonido que cada estudiante debía practicar durante la semana o el tiempo que fuera necesario.

Paso a paso de la estrategia

El funcionamiento era muy sencillo y precisamente allí estaba su éxito.

Primero evaluaba el nivel lector de cada estudiante para identificar si debía trabajar sonidos simples o sonidos complejos. Luego entregaba a cada niño la ficha correspondiente con el sonido que estaba fortaleciendo.

La actividad diaria consistía en algo muy concreto: crear cinco palabras utilizando ese sonido. Las palabras se realizaban en casa con apoyo de la familia y, al día siguiente, cada estudiante pasaba a la pizarra para escribirlas y leerlas frente al grupo.
Cinco palabras parecían pocas, pero la constancia diaria terminó convirtiéndose en un aprendizaje enorme.

La escuela y la familia trabajando como un solo equipo

Uno de los mayores logros de esta estrategia fue involucrar a las familias sin convertir la tarea en una carga.

Al tratarse únicamente de cinco palabras, los padres podían acompañar el proceso en pocos minutos al finalizar el día. Poco a poco comenzaron a formar parte activa del aprendizaje de sus hijos, fortaleciendo no solo la lectura sino también la confianza de los niños.

Incluso cuando algún estudiante faltaba a clases, la dinámica no se detenía. Al regresar al día siguiente ya traía sus cinco palabras listas porque conocía perfectamente la actividad. Esto permitió mantener la continuidad del aprendizaje aun cuando existían ausencias escolares.

Aprender respetando el ritmo de cada estudiante

Algo que siempre defendí durante este proceso fue que no todos los niños aprenden al mismo tiempo.

Mientras algunos estudiantes ya trabajaban sonidos complejos como "br", "pl", "tr", "gue" o "gui", otros continuaban fortaleciendo sonidos simples. Sin embargo, todos participaban durante la lectura en la pizarra.

Los estudiantes más avanzados practicaban fluidez lectora, mientras que quienes todavía estaban iniciando iban afinando su oído al escuchar diariamente nuevas palabras. Sin darse cuenta, todos aprendían unos de otros dentro del mismo espacio.

Mucho más que leer: fortaleciendo la pronunciación

Con el paso de las semanas observé un beneficio que inicialmente no había previsto.

La lectura diaria frente al grupo comenzó a mejorar notablemente la pronunciación de muchos estudiantes. Repetir sonidos constantemente, escuchar a sus compañeros y verbalizar las palabras permitió desarrollar mayor seguridad al hablar.

La participación diaria también disminuyó el miedo a leer en público. Poco a poco dejaron de sentir nervios porque entendieron que el salón era un espacio seguro donde equivocarse también formaba parte del aprendizaje.

Cuando una ficha se perdía, el aprendizaje continuaba
Como ocurre en cualquier salón de clases, algunas fichas terminaron extraviándose.

Lejos de convertirse en un problema, aquello nos permitió comprobar que la estrategia realmente estaba funcionando. Los estudiantes recordaban perfectamente cuál era el sonido que estaban trabajando, por lo que podían continuar realizando sus cinco palabras desde casa sin necesidad de tener físicamente la ficha.

Esto demostró que el aprendizaje ya no dependía únicamente del material, sino que el conocimiento había comenzado a interiorizarse.

📈 Los resultados obtenidos

Al finalizar el año escolar los avances fueron muy evidentes.
La práctica constante permitió ampliar significativamente el vocabulario de los estudiantes, mejorar la identificación de sonidos, fortalecer la pronunciación y aumentar la confianza durante la lectura en voz alta.

Además, esta estrategia fomentó hábitos muy importantes como la responsabilidad, el cumplimiento de tareas, la organización y el compromiso diario con el aprendizaje. Lo que comenzó siendo una actividad de cinco palabras terminó convirtiéndose en una rutina que unía escuela y hogar bajo un mismo objetivo: aprender a leer con alegría.

Estoy convencida de que muchas veces las estrategias más efectivas no son las más complejas, sino aquellas que logran mantenerse en el tiempo. La Casa de los Sonidos fue una de ellas y hoy quise compartirla con la esperanza de que pueda inspirar a otros docentes y también a las familias que acompañan el hermoso proceso de enseñar a leer desde casa.
