Lyer Microbrewery / Minipivovar Lyer

avatar

I’ve been traveling and tasting beers a lot recently, and yet I skipped last #beersaturday’s, so I am like three reports due. What a shame! In my defense, this is the first Saturday in four weeks when I am home and have time to write something down. So... I will take you back to the Šumava Natural Park, the Czech Republic, and Austria borderline mountain range. There is a beautiful village called Modrava. Czechs know it as a ski resort and hiking refuge (feel free to read my cross-country skiing post). The beer geeks shall note Modrava for its microbrewery, Lyer Pivovar. It lies at the very edge of the village and is the first thing you’d see when coming from the west. We reached the place on cross-country skis. The sign saying “Pivovar” is always promising in the Czech Republic, and it made me speed up :)

As a renowned national park, the Šumava Mountains have much more to offer than just beer (I know – what a heresy to claim that here in the #beersaturday community). If you take the journey up to the mountains to taste Lyer beer you’ll probably appreciate that the brewery offers accommodation (yes, you can stay in the brewery, how cool is that?) and wellness with a sauna. It could be a great place to spend a hiking weekend even with somebody who wouldn’t undergo such a voyage merely for beer (like if there were any of those people among your friends, huh?). I haven’t been upstairs to see the rooms or wellness, but I guess it would look similar to the restaurant. This wooden style is sort of typical of the region. Unlike hundreds of Czech microbreweries with a history stretching over centuries, Lyer is a brand new one. It was founded in 2014 in one of the large village houses. If you want to see several historical photos and some super-fancy new shots, check out the official website.

Being responsible skiers (and having to rush back to our hotel before the darkness fell), we decided to buy bottled beers rather than taste them on the spot. We opted for a Dark Bohemian Lager, as I am really into this style, and an India Pale Lager Klokan (Kangaroo). Yep, not a typo. It actually is an IPL. Both beers were unfiltered and non-pasteurized – that is a standard nowadays when it comes to Czech microbreweries.

I proto, že nás ještě čekala cesta zpátky do Srní, a navíc nás tlačil čas. A tak jsme si na cestu přibalili tmavou jedenáctku ležák a India pale lager Klokan. Ano, nemám tam chybu, opravdu je to lager (spodně kvašené pivo) a ne ale (svrchně kvašené pivo). Obě piva byla nefiltrovaná a nepasterizovaná, což mi přijde jako standard u českých minipivovarů.

We tasted the dark lager the same evening in the hotel. That is why we drank it from those tiny glasses. I might have been too tired to be critical, but it was one of the very best dark lagers I’ve drunk. Its sweetness was very decent, yet lingering. It was followed by a typical dark lager set of aromas – coffee, cocoa, and roasted malt scents. I regret we didn’t have a draught one. On the other hand, I have an excuse to take my girlfriend back to the Šumava for a summer hike :)

A to mám tmavé ležáky rád.

India Pale Lager is a rare beer style; I haven’t tasted many others that I could compare. So I kept Klokan for home. I could distinguish the typical IPA hops – Citra and Amarillo. Yet the bottom fermentation added a strange zest to them. It felt a bit unusual, and I have mixed emotions about it. I could imagine having a pint or two now and then, but I definitely prefer the dark lager over this IPL.

Since #beersaturday is a challenge, sort of, I would like @gamer00 to join and write down something about (his favourite) beer(s).

Dobré jídlo, velmi pitelné pivo a pěkné prostředí.

Hi! Thanks for the shoutout!

I will try to make a beer post as soon as possible. I can't do much photo editing nor can I even post much at the moment since I managed to break my computer.

But like I said, I'll try...

Oh, and I forgot. I haven't tried, or even seen these beer brands you showed. Hopefully I will some day be able to get a taste.
