Hello to all the Aliento community, in this opportunity I want to tell you about a family tradition that we have in my family, and how, this year was quite different from the previous ones.

Hola a toda la comunidad de Aliento, en esta oportunidad quiero contarles acerca de una tradición familiar que tenemos en mi familia, y como, este año fue bastante diferente a los anteriores.

For as long as I can remember, every year in the middle of December we make the traditional Venezuelan hallacas, usually we would get together with my aunt's family, and we would all agree to buy the ingredients and prepare them. But the problem is that my aunt lives quite far away from the city, so it was very difficult for us to go there this year, so we decided to change this tradition a little and make our own hallacas together with my sister-in-law's family.

Desde que tengo uso de razón, todos los años, a mediados de mes de diciembre se hacen las tradicionales hallacas venezolanas, normalmente nos reuníamos con la familia de mi tía, y entre todos nos poníamos de acuerdo para comprar los ingredientes y prepararlas. Pero el problema es que tía vive bastante lejos de la ciudad, por lo que se nos hacía muy complicado ir hasta allá este año, así que nos ocurrió cambiar un poco dicha tradición y hacer nuestras hallacas nosotros mismos junto con la familia de mi cuñada.

The day came and I was not in Chivacoa, but in Cocorote, at my girlfriend's house, so early in the morning we went out to catch a bus to get home at lunchtime, and then go to my sister-in-law's mother's house to start making the hallacas.

Llegó el día y yo no estaba en Chivacoa, si no en Cocorote, en casa de mi novia, por lo que temprano en la mañana salimos a agarrar bus para poder llegar a la hora del almuerzo a mi casa, para posteriormente ir a casa de la mamá de mi cuñada para comenzar a hacer las hallacas.

We got there and got down to work, we divided into several groups, my mom and my sister-in-law's mom prepared them, and my brother, my girlfriend and I, we tied them, but as we progressed we realized that we would be missing leaves, so my girlfriend and I went in search of them. After 8 unsuccessful attempts all over town, we arrived to a place where we finally found them, but now, there was a very important detail missing, cleaning them, so my girlfriend and I immediately went to my brother's house to start cutting and cleaning them, because there was better space for such work.

Llegamos allí y nos pusimos manos a la obra, nos dividimos en varios grupos, mi mamá, y la mamá de mi cuñada las preparaban, y mi hermano, mi novia y yo, las amarrábamos, pero conforme fuimos avanzando nos dimos cuenta de que nos faltarían hojas, por lo que mi novia y yo salimos en su búsqueda. Luego de 8 intentos fallidos por todo el pueblo, llegamos a un lugar donde por fin las encontramos, pero ahora, faltaba un detalle muy importante, limpiarlas, por lo que mi novia y yo nos dirigimos inmediatamente a casa de mi hermano para comenzar a cortarlas y limpiarlas, debido a que allá había mejor espacio para dicho trabajo.

It took us quite a while, about 2 hours, maybe more, but there were more than 2 kilos of leaves so it was not exactly a fast job, but luckily we finished on time. Then we started to cook them, as you know before putting the hallacas in the water it must have 40 minutes boiling before putting the hallacas in, so, between batches it became night, and almost at 11 pm we had finished cooking all the hallacas.

Nos tomó un buen rato, alrededor de unas 2 horas, quizá más, pero eran más de 2 kilos de hojas así que no era un trabajo precisamente rápido, pero por suerte terminamos a tiempo. Luego comenzamos a cocinarlas, como saben antes de meter las hallacas en el agua esta debe tener 40 minutos hirviendo antes de meter las hallacas, por lo que, entre lote y lote se nos hizo de noche, y casi a las 11 de la noche fue habíamos terminado de cocinar todas las hallacas.

This day was a challenge, since in previous years my aunt was in charge of organizing everything, and it was the first time we tried to make them by ourselves, but sometimes you have to take risks, everything is part of a learning process, and although they were not the best hallacas in the world, we already know exactly where we must improve for next year, and, above all, that as a family we can do anything.

Este día fue todo un reto, ya que en años anteriores mi tía era la encargada de organizar todo, y era la primera vez que las intentábamos hacer por nosotros mismos, pero a veces hay que arriesgarse, todo es parte de un proceso de aprendizaje, y aunque no fueron las mejores hallacas del mundo, ya sabemos exactamente en que debemos mejorar para el año que viene, y, sobre todo, que en familia podemos hacer lo que sea.
