[EN/ES] Starting July without a cell phone

The first of July I received the month losing my cell phone, that day I was watching some videos on the TikTok app which was frozen and I had to restart the phone with some fear, as the equipment has a factory defect that causes it to no longer work after a reboot, but I was not very worried because another time I had that problem and I managed to bring it back to life. Unfortunately this time the death of the phone was definitive, no matter how hard I tried during the whole weekend I could not get it to start again.

To put a little contesto the phone is a Xiaomi POCO M3 which I bought in April 2021, the phone has a factory problem that is presumed to be the fault of the chip that manages the battery charge which fails to read the voltage and causes a day does not turn on more, the problem can manifest itself by turning on or restarting the device. Just one day in May of this year I had this problem for the first time by restarting, it had never given any sign of that failure for a whole year. Usually the failure always manifested itself before a year, but in my case it took longer.

That first time the equipment failed I managed to solve it by disconnecting the battery for 40 minutes which caused the circuits to discharge and when I reconnected the battery and tried to turn it on the equipment came back to life. This time I did the procedure a total of five times where in the last attempt I left the battery disconnected for more than 24 hours, but no luck, something happened internally that ended up preventing the trick of disconnecting the battery was successful. From what I investigated is a problem of cracks in the soldering of the chip that manages the battery charge, which I assume that the deterioration is too extensive and no longer gave more of if this device.

Once I assumed that the loss of the phone was definitive I spent a few days considering the idea of having the phone repaired in a specialized store. The problem is that the actual solution to the failure involves removing that chip completely, cleaning both sides (chip and board) and placing new solder using a soldering jig with solder powder in conjunction with a heat gun, it is a complicated procedure as it is a surface mount component. All of this makes it a considerably expensive repair. As I was able to confirm with a technician who worked for one of these specialty stores, he valued the work at between $60 and $80 US dollars.

I'm sure you're thinking it's worth the repair, the phone cost me $175 when I bought it and if I could be 100% sure that the repair would be done, of course it's worth it. The problem is that there are ways to get the phone working again without having to do the whole job and such a procedure could keep the phone working for as long as the repair warranty is active. The chip in question is covered by a metal plate that if a generous amount of solder is applied to it the resulting heat brings the phone back to life for a while, but it is not a real solution to the problem and with this work the fault always ends up coming back.

It would give me a lot of pain to spend $80 dollars on a repair and the phone ends up failing again. Selling it is also not an option since with the reputation it has it is almost impossible to get a price that can cover the repair costs and be in positive balance. That's why in the end I decided to buy another cell phone that, if you are perceptive enough you will surely have already noticed, since all the images in this writing are made with the cell phone I bought. I don't know if I'm too innocent or maybe too dumb, but I ended up buying another Xiaomi of which I hope to make a review focused on the daily use experience and not so much on the synthetic test numbers that in the end tell us nothing.

El primero de julio recibí el mes perdiendo mi teléfono móvil, ese día estaba viendo unos videos en la app de TikTok la cual se quedo congelada y me tocaba reiniciar el teléfono con todo el temor del mundo, ya que el equipo tiene un defecto de fábrica que provoca que no funcione más después de un reinicio, pero yo no estaba muy preocupado ya que en otra oportunidad me paso ese problema y logre hacer que volviera a la vida. Lamentablemente en esta ocasión la muerte del teléfono fue definitiva, por más que lo intente durante todo el fin de semana no pude lograr que volviera arrancar.

Para poner un poco de contesto el teléfono es un Xiaomi POCO M3 el cual compre en abril del 2021, dicho teléfono tiene un problema de fábrica que se presume es culpa del chip que administra la carga de la batería el cual falla en la lectura del voltaje y provoca que un día no encienda más, el problema se puede manifestar prendiendo o reiniciando el equipo. Justamente un día de mayo de este año se me presentó dicho problema por primera vez reiniciando, nunca había dado signo alguno de esa falla durante todo un año. Por lo general la falla siempre se manifestaba antes del año, pero en mi caso tardó más.

Esa primera vez que falló el equipo logre solventar desconectando la batería por 40 minutos lo que hizo que los circuitos se descargaran y al volver a conectar la batería e intentar encenderlo el equipo volvió a la vida. En esta ocasión hice el procedimiento un total de cinco veces donde en el último intento deje la batería desconectada por más de 24 horas, pero no hubo suerte, algo pasó internamente que terminó evitando que el truco de la desconexión de la batería tuviera éxito. Por lo que investigue es un problema de fisuras en las soldaduras del chip que administra la carga de la batería, con lo cual asumo que el deterioro es demasiado grande y ya no dio más de si el equipo.

Una vez asumí que la pérdida del teléfono era definitiva estuve unos días considerando la idea de mandar reparar el equipo en alguna tienda especializada. El problema es que la solución real a la falla implica retirar ese chip por completo, limpiar ambos lados (chip y tarjeta) y colocar nueva soldadura usando una plantilla con estaño en polvo en conjunto con una pistola de calor, es un procedimiento complicado ya que es un componente de montura superficial. Todo esto hace que sea una reparación considerablemente costosa. Cosa que pude confirmar con un técnico que trabajó para una de estas tiendas especializadas, valoró dicho trabajo entre $60 y $80 dólares americanos.

Seguro estarás pensando que vale la pena la reparación, el teléfono cuando lo compre me costó $175 dólares y si yo pudiera asegurar al 100% que se realice la reparación claro que vale la pena. El problema es que existen formas de hacer que el teléfono vuelva a funcionar sin tener que hacer el trabajo completo y dicho procedimiento pudiera hacer funcionar el equipo durante el tiempo que tenga activa la garantía de la reparación. El chip en cuestión está cubierto por una placa de metal que si se le aplica una cantidad generosa de estaño el calor resultante hace que el teléfono vuelva a la vida por un tiempo, pero no es una solución real al problema y con este trabajo siempre termina volviendo la falla.

Me daría muchísimo dolor gastar $80 dólares en una reparación y que el teléfono termine fallando otra vez. Venderlo tampoco es una opción ya que con la fama que tiene es casi imposible lograr obtener un precio que pueda cubrir los gastos de la reparación y quedar en saldo positivo. Por eso al final decidí comprarme otro teléfono móvil que, si eres lo suficientemente perspicaz seguro ya lo habrás notado, ya que todas las imágenes de este escrito están realizadas con el equipo que me compré. No se si soy demasiado inocente o quizás muy tonto, pero termine comprando otro Xiaomi del cual espero hacer una reseña enfocada en la experiencia de uso diario y no tanto en los números de pruebas sintéticas que al final no nos dicen nada.
