[SPA - ENG] How much do you love yourself?

(desideratum = deseo aún no cumplido)

"No one can make you feel inferior, without your consent."
Eleonor Roosevelt - American politician.
Hello, my Hive friends. Welcome back to "In AntiDepression Mode", a space to prevent, treat and overcome clinical depression, or at least that is what I seek to achieve in those who read me by sharing my experience as a survivor of depression.

The first time I read the word self-concept, was in the book "Aprendiendo a quererse a sí mismo " by the Argentine psychologist and writer, Walter Riso. I remember buying and reading that book because I was always aware that my self-esteem was not the best. Insecure, self-conscious, shy, fearful, awkward, perfectionist. Walter Riso in the above mentioned book expresses that "we are not taught to love ourselves, to like ourselves, to contemplate ourselves and to trust ourselves. Moreover, although some of us parents have this as a desideratum, we lack adequate teaching procedures. We are also not taught how to teach ourselves".
I was a child like most of you who are reading me, and being honest, we can certify these words of Riso: we are not taught to love ourselves. I am not going to accuse those who raised me that they criticized me or made fun of me by putting me as the worst, or that I was a mistreated and vexed child, humiliated at most, I would be a vulgar liar. But we know that you don't have to be treated that way to grow up with low self-esteem, a poor self-concept and or a bad self-image; remember: we are not taught to love ourselves, and I was not. I was not taught positive affirmations, I was not taught the habit of self-knowledge (the famous exercise of our list of defects and virtues), nor was I effectively counteracted the negative messages I received from the outside: schoolmates, neighbors and my own mind that was strengthening and affirming those messages for lack of a better option.

Look at this pearl that Riso leaves us:
Our socialization system has been oriented more to prevent affective excesses, known by specialists as "manias" (inflated self-esteem, overconfidence, etc.), than to states of sadness and depression caused by insecurity, self-image and negative self-concept. Sufficiency and overconfidence produce discomfort. Insecurity produces pity. In general, people tend to take the side of the weakest. .... Immunity to the scourge of depression is only achieved if you learn to love yourself.
I don't think there is much more to add. Low self-esteem or failure to love oneself can and does lead to depression. And this is intimately linked to what we talked about in the first post of this series about the Cognitive Triad proposed by Aaron Beck, which suggests that people with depression have a negative perception about themselves, their self-esteem is not adequate and therefore their pattern of thinking and interpretation of what happens to them is partially or totally negative and catastrophic. And I am an example of this. As I mentioned at the beginning, that's how I lived, that's how I thought; and when you add low self-esteem, a lack of meaning or purpose in life and the genetic factor that resides in me, well, you can't expect very positive things.

HOW TO IMPROVE SELF-ESTEEM?.
I don't intend to make this post so long. I will only share some exercises or techniques that helped me to be more aware of myself and that somehow allowed me to increase my self-esteem.
- Personality test. I used to take many tests on the internet to know myself. You have to be careful not to take the results too seriously and only use them as a reference.
- I was able to identify my temperament. According to the theory of the famous Greek physician Hippocrates who proposes 4 types of temperaments: sanguine, choleric, melancholic and phlegmatic, I was able to identify myself with one of them and this allowed me to know myself very well.
- List of weaknesses and strengths. This simple exercise that seems easy but is not, helped me a lot to be aware of my talents or virtues and above all to begin to accept them, because it is one thing to know yourself, another to believe it.
- I read a lot of material about self-esteem: books, internet articles (at that time YouTube did not exist or was just appearing) and I started to change my way of thinking. It was not an easy or fast process, it took time, but I was able to do it and I keep learning every day.
There are more recommendations you can follow. I suggest you to read the books of this Argentinean clinical psychologist, Walter Riso, it will not be in vain, you will learn a lot. I will also leave you below these lines a page where they give us a series of tips to improve our self-concept by modifying our thinking schemes. I hope you find it very useful.
-The cognitive triad: I'm broken, people don't treat me well and this is not going to change. (article in spanish)
Without more to add and wishing to see you next week, I say goodbye with the best of my wishes that we can prevent depression by increasing our self-esteem or we can overcome it in the same way, after all, having a healthy and adequate self-concept, self-image and self-confidence are infallible recipes to be happy.
"Loving ourselves is perhaps the most important fact that guarantees our survival in a world that is complex and increasingly difficult to cope with".
Walter Riso - Argentine psychologist

Bendiciones 🙏🤗💕🌺
