Spyro - One of my favorite childhood sagas

Something that usually happens to us in any environment in which we want to develop is that as time goes by our tastes change to such an extent that in the end when we make a certain retrospective we realize that there is a difference from heaven to earth with the games we play now and the ones we used to playback then, or well, at least it happened to me.

And yes, it's normal to be a kid and your tastes lean towards the colorful and friendly themes that characterize that stage as childhood, and it's crazy to see that now we see that and say "Bah, how childish". But I try (not always, but enough) not to judge as soon as I see that, there are amazing games with aesthetics that are not necessarily paladins, warlocks, or things associated with other stages, as is the case of Spyro, one of the sagas that marked my childhood and which I remember with great affection and this is why I wanted to revisit it to see what I thought after so many years in its version 1 and 2 for PS1.

English

The plot of Spyro is really simple, we are a mini dragon whose hobby is to save the world and its inhabitants as a good superhero in every platform video game. In the first and second installments, which are the ones I spent the most time playing, the main villains were Gnasty Gnorc and Ripto who sought to take possession of the whole world no matter who was in it, that's why we will be in charge of defeating them.

This saga may not stand out for its complex story but what surprised me today were its graphic details, specifically in 2, which to be honest my PC (where I emulated it) suffered in some instances where the elements were so many, something that had never happened to me with an emulator game and the fact that I was playing it made me wonder how the heck the PS1 managed to run this.

We have games like Metal Gear Solid, Legacy of Kain, or Crash Bandicoot itself that did not have bad technical details but their character modeling was not polished to perfection, something that does not happen with Spyro, especially its second version in which although it is a platform game, its details of smooth movements, well-made characters, well-rendered textures and above all the maps are something that perfectly made me feel (for the time in which it came out) that I was playing a PS2 game.

I remember that the bosses were something that stood out, obviously not because they were difficult or impossible since at the end of the day it is a game that makes you want to have a good time, but without a doubt the fact that every time the main bosses appeared in cinematics they generated more intrigue to get to that instance to fight them. This is something fundamental and that really in version 2 (which is my favorite) improved a lot concerning the previous one which if it was good, this is an improved version that polishes many things and adds new moves that I loved to do in other platforms games like Banjo - Kazooie and in this one is no exception.

I'm a fan of the simple things, I like platform games, I used to like them much more than now. This game brings together several aspects of my favorite platform games, Super Mario 64, Banjo - Kazooie, Ratchet & Clank and compresses them into some theme that is nothing groundbreaking but for some reason makes me want to keep exploring. I think that's the perfect definition of the feeling I get from playing Spyro.

One thing I did notice, though, and is that I do complain that the game doesn't present a high difficulty. I know you're thinking "Wow, you're a masochist", but not really, I don't know but if we agree on something is that any game with a touch of difficulty is much more fun, makes you feel the fact of passing it as an achievement, and also makes it unforgettable.

The design of the maps is very good, I'm always a fan of diversity and it is something necessary in a game of this type so that you do not get bored always going through the same type of map and also feel that the adventure is opening doors for you. Already in M64 and BK one of the sections that made you like so much were their maps that never incurred in the monotonous and in this case, it is the same for Spyro in each of its deliveries in which we can go from friendly worlds to apocalyptic as the dungeon of Gnasty.

In addition to this, the collectibles like skills, gems, statues, keys, etc are that plus of which I always remember trying to get 100% but never achieving it because of some loose one that got left in the way. The soundtrack in general was good too, not something outstanding in too much but it fulfilled the objective of putting me in the mood.

What I think about the game after all this time?

Undoubtedly it is something that I relapse a lot when I try a game with which I had many anecdotes and remembering each thing I fall into mixed feelings with it. Something similar to what happened to me with Dino Crisis happened with this one, the game is a total gem technically and I would even dare to say that one of the games that brought out the most potential to the PlayStation 1 although that difficulty factor certainly today pushes me to feel like I'm playing a simple and childish work.

However that will not stop me from enjoying the game, it makes you spend pleasant moments and enjoy every second after the famous PS1 screen when a game started. The game is and always will be one of my favorite platformers and one with which I can get to have many mixed feelings and memories. It's one of those things that you know that nowadays it doesn't go with you but you have great respect for it because of what it meant.

Anyway, this was my appreciation of Spyro after revisiting it after 18 years. No doubt I loved it and I felt something nostalgic playing it again and I think it's that feeling when you go through a place and you have a so-called "Deja vu" and remember things that happened long ago, certainly one of the best. As of today, the game has a remake, I have not played it but I have seen videos on Youtube and I could appreciate that it is very similar with a noticeable graphical improvement, so it is curious.

I recommend Spyro entirely, I don't know if you probably that are reading it like it since as I said at this point tastes change, but you can't deny that it is a classic, and classics never die. So if you have a little nephew I would see this game as a perfect game for him to get fond of the gaming world. If you made it this far thank you very much and see you in the next one.

I remember having a demo of Spyro on my old PS1. I played it for hours even though there were only a fraction of the content available. Never got to play the whole thing.

The game itself is so entertaining that any technical aspect the game may have doesn't matter as such, it's addictive to run, fly or just collect gems in the map haha. Thanks for stopping by dude!

That's right mate, games are timeless and it's never too much to try them so you don't die without the experience of having played them. Crash Bandicoot is a classic that I love too and another one that is part of my childhood. Thanks for stopping by!
