🍿 The Hustle (2019) - starring Rebel Wilson and Anne Hathaway [Film review #4]

Source

Hey cinephiles! How was your weekend? Any new gems discovered behind the little screen?

I'm used to writing this kind of posts closer to the end of the week because that's perhaps the best moment when someone can take some time to watch a good movie, TV show or a new episode from his favourite series, but since we all miss being happier these days, I think it's a pretty good excuse to begin the new week with a movie recommendation that I've seen recently which brought a lot of smiles and laughs.

If this is not already obvious, I'm talking about a comedy movie entitled The Hustle which even though it was released in 2019, is still worth being watched in 2022 and I guess in the following years as well because it doesn't seem like one of those films which are not cool anymore to watch if you are not doing it as soon as they were released.

Introduction

The Hustle was released in 2019 and it's produced by Chris Addison who's known for both movies and series he was a director for, some of the most popular titles being The Thick of It, In the Loop, Mock the Week, but also Veep.

The main cast is formed from Rebel Wilson and Anne Hathaway, but along with these, you will get to notice a few more familiar faces like Alex Sharp that I first saw playing in How to Talk to Girls at Parties, but also Ingrid Oliver that is pretty active in the world of comedy movies too.

This is an American comedy movie where the scenery is a remake after Dirty Rotten Scoundrels released in 1988, which is, as well, another remake of the Bedtime Story released in 1964. So we can basically discuss about a 2nd time remake of a movie that was resurrected again in 2019 with slight modifications to the whole scenery.

Description

The movie is based on two similar but yet so different stories of two women who are scamming people for either small things or high-class goods, that sooner or later they will meet each other and begin more or less a collaboration.

Rebel Wilson is the one who opens the movie with a pretty boring attempt of scamming someone just for the sake of enjoying a dinner for free, while at the opposite pole Anne Hathaway is aiming a lot higher, obtaining a $500,000 bracelet from a very rich person. This one comes with a team of two more members who are helping her reach new records and get the well-developed plans to success, while Rebel is on her own.

However, not much time passes until the girls intersect on a train ride and then while both were trying to scam the same man that turns the whole thing in a competition about which one of them does the "job" better, but also in a possible way of collaborating and working together.

That's where the whole fun starts, with lots of situations they get through including both funny and embarrassing moments, but as it happens in life when two people are fighting and the 3rd wins, so will end the movie. Who the 3rd person is? I'm not going to reveal any spoilers! 😃

It's just a long journey of two girls who are always busy outfoxing each other instead of accepting the competition, which gives some lessons but also opens new doors with opportunities for both of the female scammers.

No matter if you are scamming a man for a dinner for free, or a rich person for $500,000 goods, if you are wearing high-class clothes or just a t-shirt with some jeans, if you have a team or you are on your own, everything goes to the same actions of stealing from people which is another reminder that you should think twice before having trust in a person you just met.

Opinions

Even though we are talking about a remake of a..remake...of a movie from 1964, some might believe that the whole essence of the movie was lost on the way with all these adaptations but I think that the director of the film did a really good job turning another masterpiece from the past into an actual gem in 2019.

I am a big consumer of comedy movies and they are amongst my favourite genres of films, so I can easily say that I won't make any exception to see all the movies released with some actors that are well known for getting roles in comedy movies, but when you get to have both Rebel Wilson and Anne Hathaway in the same film, then I think you can easily consider that a well-spent time even before seeing what's everything about.

Though, a thing that I think we can all agree that most of the comedies released lately come with some sexual or obscene scenes just for the viewer's enthusiasm so there are not many movies with the same genre tag that remain "clean". However, I really like that The Hustle is one of the few comedy movies that is not coming with any of these even though it would be a lot easier and more predictable to see girls scamming rich men using other skills to conquer people's hearts, instead of their brains.

I have no problem seeing comedy movies with those scenes as well, but I do believe that it's a very thin line between keeping everything funny or turning it into an exaggerated moment which not many manage to handle well.

I also appreciated that it's not one of those movies that end with a little drama or some wise words that will make tears roll down your cheeks, because I believe that is only suitable for the romance-comedy movies which is not the case in today's film, so there goes another plus for The Hustle.

Conclusions

The Hustle is both a good reminder of how many scammers are out there no matter if we are talking about digital thieves or the ones from the day by day life, but also a silly movie that will make you have a laughter while learning to be more careful on the people who are surrounding you and what their real interests are.

The remake made in 2019 is one of the movies that easily got a full audience when it was running in the Cinema rooms, but it can be also considered one of the perfect movies for a date or party night because it's still funny and great to watch even 3 years later after it was released.

It's easy to consider the movie a great one just when you think that the cast comes with two very good actresses that make their job very well, but there is no actor who can save a movie from being a failure unless the script is not what it should be, so The Hustle is definitely one of the pieces that represent a whole bundle of emotions, nice stories, funny moments, good actors, outstanding background, smart script, and nice soundtracks played by Avril Lavigne and Meghan Trainor.

Here's the official trailer of the movie that might help you get a better idea of what's everything about. I personally watched the movie on Netflix but it can also be found online.

Have you seen "The Hustle"?

Or maybe the other remake of the original movie from 1964?

Personally, I wasn't even born when the original movie or the remake from 1988 appeared so I've only watched The Hustle which I believe is a really good comedy to see these days, but what other fun comedies have you seen lately?

Hi nice to meet you @gabrielatravels , I'll be totally honest with you, I didn't like the first 30 minutes of this movie and I was about to pause it and continue with another movie, but something deep inside told me that (Rebel Wilson) and (Anne Hathaway) were not together in this movie by chance and that something good had to come out of it.

I understand that the professional critics didn't give it a good rating and it's understandable, nothing new, the same clichés and a not so original story and that can affect the rating. One thing I can point out is that the movie does make you laugh or at least personally I laughed several times and I didn't expect it.

It manages well with what it has, maybe if it had been handled better the story would have worked, the mission to make you laugh at least was accomplished.

Cheers!

No worries of communicating your feedback. We all have different opinions and ways of thinking and that makes us not be the same. But as long as it made me laugh several times and I enjoyed watching it, I consider it a good movie. Thanks for stopping by though.
