Greetings to all members of the community, how are you? Venezuelans go through unusual situations on a daily basis, one of these is related to the electric service which is a complete disaster. Imagine you are having a great day, you are enjoying the tranquility of the afternoon with a good coffee and out of nowhere you realize that the electricity has gone out just when you were about to do something for which you need some device that is now dead because it has no current? the reality is that this happens to us but in worse circumstances, it seems that electricity smells the moments of need to decide to leave, in fact, I think that if someone were to do studies on the subject, I am sure they would determine that when you are in an emergency there is an 89% chance that the electricity goes out.

A few months ago I was taking an exam for college in a subject that could be considered one of the most difficult of the career I am studying, we were in the virtual mode, so it had to be delivered via email, something that when I registered the subject seemed wonderful but turned into a nightmare when just when I was answering the electricity went out. I had to run out to check if my laptop had battery to continue, as I didn't use it frequently at that time, it was charged to half of its capacity, but the problem was not only that, but the cell phone signal is non-existent when there is no electricity and obviously I needed a signal to send the email with the answers to the exam before the time was up.

Between various insults I answered what I could with the help of the laptop and my cell phone to save a little bit of the note, but I could not save myself from the big headache I had for the rest of the day. My academic fiascos due to the lack of electricity have unfortunately become a constant, it is as if the universe wanted me to be unable to fulfill my academic obligations, who needs to be a lawyer? I start to think that maybe it is a sign from an almighty being for me to try to reconnect with my spirituality, because the only thing you can do here when the electricity goes out is just sit here staring at nothingness itself while you wonder what you must have done wrong in another life to find yourself going through these circumstances, that and talk about everything that is wrong in the country with your relatives.

But these are not the only problems that are generated when the electricity goes out, I think it has a particular taste of going out when we are cooking because many times when we are making a cake, it goes out. Those are the moments when I have to pull out all my power to help my mom beat the cake mix because believe me, it's not easy, the more you make, the more you feel like you are rowing to cross the ocean, with the worry that it will be lumpy. I try to put humor into the situation, I pretend to be a mixer and tell my mom that I have several speeds, I start beating the mixture as if I were possessed by an evil spirit to make her laugh, but inside a part of my soul dies because I know I won't be able to move my arms for at least a week.

Now, we have an oven that runs on gas without the need for electricity but not everyone is like that. One of my aunts has an oven that needs electricity to keep it from going out for supposed safety measures, combining that with a cake already inside in the middle of a holiday like December 24 is a recipe for disaster. Of all the days that the electricity could have gone out, it just had to go out on one of the most hectic days for Venezuelan families who are baking any number of typical dishes for the holidays, didn't I tell you before? I'm sure you smell the fear. Needing a quick solution so that the cake would not spoil just as it was starting to rise, my uncle had to run off with the half-baked cake to my other aunt's house to finish baking the cake there since his oven fortunately doesn't care if there is electricity, a real hero.

Are you watching your favorite show? The power goes out. Do you need to send an email to your boss because otherwise you're going to get fired? The power goes out. The love of your life finally confesses to you, telling you that he's always been in love with you? The power goes out. The best part of the case is that it goes out for no apparent reason, just because, however, you only have to look at a power pole to realize that maybe there is an obvious reason for the electricity to go out, beyond the fact that the Venezuelan electrical system is a piece of crap. Yes, yes, the image is a reference, probably not from Venezuela, but it is a graphic representation very close to how the electricity poles look like here, full of wires everywhere without knowing exactly which one is yours, so when people from the electric company arrive to climb one you can see the neighbors in the windows of their houses watching what is happening, no one is safe.

In Venezuela, no one is immune from having their electricity go out.

Thank you very much for reading me, I hope you are well and I hope to meet you next time.

The sentence "The power goes out" just got into my hate list book, it's super frustrating just imagining the power off scenarios you shared.

It really is! Trying to make dinner by the light of a cell phone so you can see what you're doing is a whole new level of frustration, especially since we're used to eating arepas for dinner and doing it in the dark is a nightmare.

Thank you very much for reading and commenting.

This power issue is frustrating Indeed - it's an enemy of progress why would it wait for you to write exam first then decide to power off? It can frustrating to eat food with a phone flashlight or to end up with half-cooked food and half-baked cake. 👀🥺

We also experience it in my country South Africa. We call it load shedding here it even have different stages and it is scheduled. You get to know when they're going to shut down minimum is 2hr interv but they can do 6hrs a day.🥲

Here they sometimes apply something called 'Load Management' and technically they give us a schedule... but they never follow it. Let's say according to the schedule my location is due to be without power for 10 hours starting at 6 A.M. on Tuesday.

When the appointed time comes on Tuesday, the electricity doesn't go out, the hours go by and you think everything is fine, but the next thing you know, the power goes off. They can also take it off for much longer than the time of day. In general, it's crazy.

Thanks for your valuable comment, I find it very interesting to learn about other places through people's comments. Best wishes, take care of yourself.

Yes One realise that there are some problems that countries have in common and citizens just have to deal with frustrations on a day to day.

We can all laugh about it and move on but it is really frustrating that things like power cut are getting normalised we even have special names for them.😅

Thank You! Best wishes to you too

Cheers!🌺
