Retro Review - The Misadventures of Flink

avatar

Again I bring a game of the adventure and platform genre, which was developed by Psygnosis, which were the same creators of: The Adventures of Lomax, which a few weeks ago I did their respective review. This time we are facing a game that maintains many of the main features of the games of this style, but with a few elements that make it a little more varied, plus compared to other similar games, this game in particular, has a slightly higher difficulty.

Today's Retro Review is about: Misadventures of Flink.

As a good adventure and platform game, we are faced with a very simple plot, with the classic purpose of "saving our people from the villain of the moment". Misadventures of Flink takes us to the fantastic island "Imagica" which is governed by 4 great wizards, however, one day things would change drastically, since the main villain of this game appears on the scene: Wainwright, a sorcerer who has captured and crystallized the 4 great wizards with his dark magic. Because of this, the pure and white magic that surrounded the island is totally null, so the darkness and evil lurk all over the island, subduing and enslaving all its inhabitants. But as always happens in this kind of games, Flink, a young apprentice magician, enters the scene and will be in charge of returning peace and white magic to his island.

Graphically, Misadventures of Flink is quite similar to The Adventures of Lomax, since these two games were developed by the same company, so this game maintains a quite good graphic quality, with many details on screen and many elements that make each scenery look nice to the eye. Although unlike The Adventures of Lomax, in Misadventures of Flink we will be able to find color tones that are a bit darker.

Misadventures of Flink knows how to reflect very well all the aesthetics related to magic and we can see this very easily in simple elements that we will see throughout our adventure on this island. Elements such as trees, have such weird designs, but so well done that emanates magic in each of its pixels. The scenarios in general terms are very good and varied, many of them are very beautiful due to many elements that decorate our environment and other elements such as the stage background that contributes much to the overall decoration of the scenario in which we find ourselves.

The design of our character, despite its simplicity, is quite good and with the elements and details sufficiently integrated, although in terms of movements it is a little scarce. The designs of the enemies are also quite good and fit very well with all the aesthetics, style, art and plot of the game.

The music in general is very good, it fits very well with the theme of the game and its scenarios, so it is a good element of accompaniment during our adventure. The melodies that we will find very characteristic of this type of games where magic is an important part of the story and gameplay, besides being very varied is of a more than decent quality. As well as the sound effects that are also of great importance in any video game, which despite being quite simple, they manage to fulfill their purpose very well.

Misadventures of Flink is another adventure and platform game with many of the most typical and classic elements and features of the industry, in itself, it is not a game that innovates in practically nothing with respect to mechanics and / or elements that make it different from other similar games (regardless of its graphics), however, despite maintaining these features it is still a highly entertaining game due to its great variability of scenarios and elements and obstacles to perform jumps.

As it is classic in this type of video games we will go through a series of scenarios which will have many enemies to defeat, in addition to the obstacles that we must overcome using our best jumping and movement skills. Each stage in this video game is much longer compared to other similar games and at the end of each stage we will find a final boss which we must defeat learning the right way to do it, as each of these bosses has a type of system and mechanics very different from each other.

In a game a bit difficult in certain aspects, at least it is much more difficult in general terms than other similar games, although it is not extremely difficult it is certainly a good challenge for a player. Although I mentioned at the beginning that this game does not innovate too much, it has a mechanic that makes it much more entertaining, since Flink, our protagonist, being an apprentice magician, still does not know all the necessary spells, so throughout our adventure we can get ingredients to perform certain types of spells very useful in our mission, these ingredients that allow us to perform these spells must be used in the correct order so that they can work.

Misadventures of Flink is one of those games that is worth playing, as it is very classic in all its mechanics and gameplay, but in general terms it is an old school game that is well worth discovering.
