Why they are the best Heavy Metal band in history of rock [ENG/ESP]
Before writing this post, I was seriously thinking about the why of many things in rock and roll. I mean, why does everyone love Led Zeppelin, or The Beatles? I even ended up finding within my own rhetorical questions, certain comparisons that make it even more difficult to give a coherent and precise answer. In other words, the more I think about it and analyse it, the more complicated it is for me to close the subject. However, I consider that in the case of Iron Maiden, these guys really were the most creative, the ones who best used harmony, rhythm and melody; besides being the most creative within Heavy Metal in rock and roll.
For this reason, I consider them worthy of a few descriptive lines that can provide contrast to the majesty of the songs, albums, productions and concerts that they have bequeathed us since their first record production, back in the 80's of the last century. The boys from London's famous "East End" have captivated the world since their debut in 1981. Of course, they have suffered several ups and downs, but they have never lost the strength that has always characterised them. On the contrary, they are still going strong and are one of the bands with the biggest following on the planet. They are also a source of pride for rock and roll in general.
Antes de redactar este post, estuve pensando seriamente el por qué de muchas cosas dentro del rock and roll. Es decir, ¿por qué todos aman a Led Zeppelin, o a The Beatles? Incluso, terminé encontrando dentro de mis propias preguntas retóricas, ciertas comparaciones que hacen que sea más difícil todavía brindarle una respuesta coherente y precisa. Dicho de otro modo, mientras más lo pienso y analizo, más complicado me es cerrar el tema. Sin embargo, considero que en el caso de Iron Maiden, éstos sujetos realmente fueron lo más creativos, los que mejor emplearon la armonía, ritmo y melodía; además de ser los más creativos dentro del Heavy Metal en el rock and roll.
Por esta razón, considero que son merecedores de unas cuantas líneas descriptivas que puedan brindar contraste ante la majestuosidad de las canciones, álbumes, producciones y conciertos que nos han legado desde su primera producción discográfica, por allá por los años 80's del siglo pasado. Los chicos del famosísimo "East End", de Londres, han cautivado al mundo desde su debut en 1981. Evidentemente, han sufrido varios altibajos pero jamás han perdido la fuerza que siempre les ha caracterizado. Todo lo contrario, continúan vigentes y son una de las agrupaciones con más seguidores en el planeta entero. Además de ser un orgullo para el rock and roll en general.
But if we talk about the genius behind the geniuses, we have to refer to Steve Harris. Founding member of Maiden, and illustrious bassist of the renowned band, fans of West Ham United (football fact). His technique, based on "triplets" with his fingers, to the rumble of a horse's gallop, is a distinct trademark for the boys from the UK, and a seal of quality for the songs and compositions of these heavy metal hard men. It is no less true that most of the great achievements are his (Steve's) work. Lyrics, arrangements, rhythms, melodies, even the titles. Nothing seems to escape Harris' creative mind.
Another curious fact is that they must definitely be one of the best live performance bands to ever grace the stage. The differences between the releases on their recorded albums and what they transmit with the same song but played live in front of thousands of fans in each of their concerts around the planet are notorious and undisguisable. Immortal songs like "Run to the Hills" or "Hallowed by They Named" must be two billion times better to listen to in the heat, tension and fury of a live concert, than in the best of sound rooms in the comfort of your own home.
Pero si hablamos del genio detrás de los genios, sin duda alguna tenemos que referirnos a Steve Harris. Miembro fundador de Maiden, y bajista ilustre de la reconocida banda, hinchas del West Ham United (dato futbolístico). Su técnica basada en "tresillos" con los dedos, al retumbe cual galope de caballo es una marca distinta para los chicos del Reino Unido, y un sello de calidad para las canciones y composiciones de estos duros del Heavy. No menos cierto, es que la mayoría de las grandes realizaciones son obra suya (de Steve). Letras, arreglos, ritmos, melodías; inclusive, hasta los títulos. Nada parece escapársele a la mente creativa de Harris.
Otro dato curioso, es que definitivamente, deben ser unas de las mejores bandas con un performance en vivo que jamás haya pisado un escenario. Son notorias e indisimulables, las diferencias entre los lanzamientos dentro de sus discos grabados y lo que transmiten con el mismo tema pero tocado en vivo ante miles de fanáticos en cada uno de sus conciertos alrededor del planeta. Temas inmortales como "Run to the Hills" o "Hallowed by they Named" deben ser dos mil millones de veces mejor escucharlos en el calor, la tensión y el furor del un concierto en vivo, que en la mejor de las salas de sonidos dentro de la comodidad de tu hogar.
As if that wasn't enough, with their new release in 2021 (September 3rd of that year), the album "Senjutsu", Maiden have broken a new record for a rock and roll band, more precisely Heavy Metal, by including the vinyl version which has skyrocketed the sales of this format all over the world. The same (sales) that are sweeping everywhere, and that evoke a better and simpler time, that of the classic years of the 1980s. Undoubtedly, they must be one of the bands that have always done things better.
I could tell you about "The Number of the Beast" or "Fear of the Dark" but they are so irreplaceable and ridiculously perfect, that it's not worth adding more qualifying adjectives to those masterpieces. On the contrary, I concentrate on how no band has been able to surpass them. Let's remember, they've been around for 42 years, and they've never lost a bit of relevance. They have their own plane to travel around the globe, with a vocalist who must have one of the best vocal registers in the whole world (Bruce Dickinson); who is also a certified pilot, a swordsman in fencing and a history professor, as well as an unequalled rockstar.
Por si fuera poco, con su nuevo lanzamiento en el 2021 (3 de septiembre de ése año), del disco "Senjutsu", los Maiden han roto un nuevo récord para una banda de rock and roll, más precisamente Heavy Metal, al incluir la versión en vinilo que ha disparado las ventas de este formato en todo el mundo. Mismas (ventas) que arrasan por doquier, y que evocan a una mejor y más simple época, la de los clásicos años de 1980's. Sin lugar a dudas, deben ser una de las bandas que mejor han hecho las cosas desde siempre.
Yo podría hablarle sobre "The Number of the Beast" o "Fear of the Dark" pero es que son tan insustituibles y ridículamente perfectas, que no vale la pena agregarle más adjetivos calificadores a esas obras maestras. Al contrario, me concentro en cómo ninguna banda ha podido superarlos. Recordemos, que tienen 42 años de carrera, y jamás han perdido ni un poco de vigencia. Tienen su propio avión para trasladarse alrededor del globo, con un vocalista que debe tener uno de los mejores registros vocales del mundo entero (Bruce Dickinson) ; que también es piloto certificado, espadachín en esgrima y profesor de historia, además de rockstar inigualable.
At some point I heard somewhere "Maiden, he repeats the same riffs over and over again in his songs. It's like punk-rock but with more solos". Ignorance is bold. However, let's suppose that's totally true, what's the problem? Music in a genre tends to be an accumulation of scales and harmonies that have previously existed and will continue to do so for eons, but it's not the scales, tones or notes that are repeated, it's the creativity behind them. In "The Trooper", for example, we learn an English history lesson in a Heavy Metal song under 5 minutes long. They don't bore, they don't go out of fashion, they are not misguided. On the contrary, their genius should stand out much more.
Something that disturbs me enormously, and that I will say it in these lines, are the criteria that the organizers of the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" have for their 2021 edition. Leaving Iron Maiden out but inducting bands (who are good but never transcendent) like The Go-Gos, Jay-Z or even Foo Fighters (mind you, I love the Foo's but if this is on merit, they are not ahead of Iron Maiden). And a band that has changed a genre that was already quite beautiful, created by Black Sabbath, doesn't "deserve" recognition towards greatness? Things I will never understand. Good thing music is free and those of us who love them will always keep in mind that there is simply no one like them.
En algún momento escuché por ahí "Maiden, repite una y otra vez los mismo riffs en sus canciones. Es como en el punk-rock pero con más solos". Hay que ver que la ignorancia es atrevida. No obstante, supongamos que éso sea totalmente cierto ¿Cuál es el problema? La música en un género tiende a ser un cúmulo de escalas y armonías que, previamente, han existido y que lo seguirán haciendo por eones, pero no son las escalas, tonos o notas las que se repiten, es la creatividad detrás de ellas. En "The Trooper", por ejemplo, aprendemos una lección de historia inglesa en una canción de Heavy Metal con una duración menor a 5 minutos. No aburren, no pasan de moda, no son unos desubicados. Todo lo opuesto, su genialidad debería sobresalir muchísimo más.
Algo que me perturba enormemente, y que lo diré en estas líneas, son los criterios que tienen los organizadores del "Salón de la Fama del Rock and Roll", para su edición del 2021. Dejando afuera a Iron Maiden pero ingresando a bandas (que son buenas pero jamás trascendentes) como The Go-Gos, Jay-Z o inclusive a Foo Fighters (ojo al dato, amo a los Foo's pero si esto es por mérito, no van por delante de Iron Maiden). Y una banda que ha cambiando un género que ya era bastante hermoso, creado por Black Sabbath, ¿no "merece" el reconocimiento hacia la grandeza? Cosas que jamás entenderé. Menos mal que la música es libre y quienes los amamos, siempre tendremos en cuenta que como ellos, sencillamente no hay.
There are good Heavy Metal bands; like "Manowar" or "Helloween" but never like the guys from the East End. None of them have that power and that transcendence. And it's quite simple why that's the question... It's almost unrepeatable in the history of music to put this line-up together in the same space of time: Steve Harris, Bruce Dickinson, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, Janick Gers, and Nicko McBrain. These 6 guys transformed the rock and roll show, with their creations but also with the power they gave to those "repetitive chords". They made heavy metal anthems, earned their way into the "Olympus" of metal, and on top of that they are the fathers of a marketing monster like "Eddie". The symbol, the owner of the "Maiden" brand and the dream of every T-shirt seller and album maker.
Hay buenas bandas para el Heavy Metal; como "Manowar" o "Helloween" pero jamás como los chicos del East End. Ninguno tiene ese poderío y esa trascendencia. Y es bastante simple el por qué de ésa cuestión... Es casi irrepetible para la historia de la música juntar en un mismo espacio tiempo a esta alineación: Steve Harris, Bruce Dickinson, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, Janick Gers, y Nicko McBrain. Estos 6 tipos transformaron el show del rock and roll, con sus creaciones pero también con el poder que le daban a esos "acordes repetitivos". Hicieron himnos del Heavy Metal, se ganaron la entrada al "Olimpo" del metal, y por si fuera poco son los padres de un monstruo de la mercadotecnia como lo es "Eddie". El símbolo, el dueño de la marca "Maiden" y el sueño de todo vendedor de camisetas y realizador de álbumes.

El último trabajo discográfico de Iron Maiden, no lo he escuchado, pero tengo buenas estima sobre se disco. Por otra parte, tuve la oportunidad de ir a un concierto de ellos, y era simplemente espectacular, el escenario, performance y la música, hacían meritorio su reconocimiento como unas de las mejores bandas de Heavy Metal.
Así es. Fueron, son, y estoy bastante convencido, en que seguirán siendo los mejores del Heavy Metal, pase lo que pase. Excelente banda. Gracias por tu comentario.
