1990, Seattle, United States of America, a remote place in that great country begins to have an interesting and undeniable movement with respect to a sub-genre that is becoming popular among the young people who follow them and consume their music, the Grunge era begins. Of course, at that time, nobody called it that, but on the contrary; it was known for being the northwest movement, or alternative to the classic and prevailing Glam Metal or Trash of the 80's. Something was born that would become immortal. A band that, seen from now (in 2022), stands out from the rest: Alice in Chains emerges, what distinguishes them? Many things, but especially their frontman/vocalist. Serene, gentle but with a voice that makes the waves resonate in the chest with force. That's Layne Staley.

Seattle's Music Bank is the place where the biggest American alternative rock bands ever played, met and made history. Few places in the world have seen such a cultural and musical explosion of multiple bands at the same historic time. Not even New York City, with the entry of punk rock with The Ramones, experienced something similar. Or California, with the explosion of the famous and excellent Californian punk-rock genre. To make this idea much clearer, you must understand that we are talking about all these bands at the same time, they were friends and colleagues: Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Mother Love Bone, The Meat Puppets, Hole, Mudhoney, Melvins, Mad Season, Stone Temple Pilots, etc, etc.... The list is very long.

In Chains, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Mother Love Bone, The Meat Puppets, Hole, Mudhoney, Melvins, Mad Season, Stone Temple Pilots, etc, etc... La lista es larguísima.

Of all the aforementioned groups, for me the best by far is Alice in Chain. And that's not to demean the others, because that's not the case at all. It's just that Layne Staley was too good. If you're a Grunge fan like me, and you've heard "Love, Hate, Love" live (Yes, at the Music Bank) you can't deny that that has to be the best rendition of a song that anyone has ever heard. It's a song that very few people know (it's not unknown either) but it's not in the band's top ten. The truth is that the feelings that emanate from the song made by Jerry Cantrell and Layne are undeniable. Heartbreaking, powerful, sad and at the same time with a brilliant heavy metal air.

And not to mention their performance, in the Unplugged, produced by MTV. I always say it, and I will never tire of reiterating it. For me, the best concert in that format (MTV's Unplugged) will always be Alice in Chains. In one song, "Sludge Factory", Layne even plays guitar and sings. An accompaniment that goes hand in hand with his already powerful but heartbreaking voice. The same one that is seen in all its splendour in "Down In A Hole" and "Rooster" for the same album. A guy, who was the best friend, and support in the beginning for a Jerry (guitarist and founder of Alice in Chains) when you had nowhere to go and nowhere to stay. He opened the doors of the recording studio where he stayed and was his full support for a long time.

Critics of Alice in Chains always argue the band's depressive and sad vibe, but few know the story of the acute grief that both Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley experienced. The former, losing his grandmother and mother within six months of each other. With a distant and distant relationship with his father (who suffered the vestiges of the Vietnam War all his life) and secondly, Layne's toxic, depressive and complicated relationship with drugs (and the abuse of drugs in his life). All as a consequence of the death of an ex-girlfriend, with whom he had already ended his relationship but who, like him, would fall into the horrendous clutches of substance abuse. A price he paid with his life and one that Staley was never able to overcome.

Mike Starr, founding bassist of Alice In Chains, in a well-remembered programme presented by VH1, "Celebrities Rehab" (2010), confessed that for years (Layne died on 5 April 2002, at the age of 34) he had never been able to get over the death of his best friend, and the fact (badly assimilated by him) of not having saved his friend's life by calling 911. In the same episode, Stanley's own mother, as a companion in Starr's treatment for alcohol and hard drug addiction, referred to her son's death and exclaimed that no one was to blame but her son. Because of his own abuse over the years, he practically isolated himself from everyone and ended up the way he did.

Nancy, Layne's mother, in a clear and unhesitating tone, released Starr from the guilt he felt for not having helped his friend. She also left for posterity a wonderful reflection: "I never blamed you for anything, Mike. I never did. I always knew what my son was and that what ended up happening could happen". Still, the artistic memory of the power of the Alice in Chains vocalist's melodic, powerful, resonant yet harmonic voice will stand the test of time, forever. Just listen to any song by this Grunge band and you will see what I mean. Regardless of whether or not they master the language, what is really relevant is what that voice will make you feel.

A voice that was born and died in Seattle, Washington State. Who immortalised, with his best friends (in Alice In Chains) a before and after in the rock and roll genre. He was also part of Mad Season, another band of the same Grunge sub-style but with less transcendence. Unfortunately, it is also true that he joins the list of great characters of the 90's who are no longer here. Leaving poor Eddie Vedder (frontman of Pearl Jam) more and more alone. Well, let's not forget that both the lead singer of Soundgarden (Chris Cornell) and Nirvana (Kurt Cobain), as well as the lead singer of Stone Temple Pilots and Alice In Chains, respectively (Scott Weiland and Layne Staley) are no longer with us. And of course, not forgetting the great Andy Wood, with Mother Love Bone.

If there is one thing I will admire Layne for the rest of my life, it is the harmony he did on backing vocals with Jerry Cantrell, which will never be surpassed. It was simply perfect but at the same time effortless. You could tell that they complemented each other, that they were right for each other. And that kind of connection will be impossible to replicate ever again. Not to detract from the "new" Alice In Chains, with the great William Duvall (whom I admire) but in Jerry's own words "Layne, is simply the best vocalist I've ever played with". And, for me at least, I couldn't contradict him. I'm an incorrigible fan of AIC but also of Seattle music. I know all of them (the bands) and the guys who created the "Facelift" album, I think they are the best of them all; by far, moreover...

Layne had the character in his voice to encompass strength, rawness, simplicity, euphoria and emotion. Undoubtedly he left a great legacy in music, and left latent the Grunge, as a musical genre, that there are still those of us who appreciate it.

Layne, to me, my dear friend, was an artist. A rare but magnificent artist. Someone who can sing loud and strong but at the same moment, being such a charismatic dude, with a soul sensitive enough to bring confidence and humanity to their songs. I just love him. That's it.
