"Jaguar": A Netflix Series that Will Make You Think [ENG/ESP]
1945, the Second World War ends on the European and Pacific fronts, the victors lay down the law to the vanquished. And in both the defunct "Empire of the Rising Sun" and the "Third Reich", the perpetrators who had not committed suicide were brought to justice by the four victorious powers of the world war (France, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics). Trials for crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide begin; sentences are handed down, case solved, right? Nothing could be further from the truth. And this time, Netflix, implementing a bit of fiction (Red Odessa) with reality, has made a series that is simply unique.
1945, la Segunda Guerra Mundial termina en los frentes de Europa y del Pacífico, los vencedores imponen la ley ante los vencidos. Y en tanto en el extinto "Imperio del Sol Naciente" como en el "El Tercer Reich", los perpetradores que no se han suicidado deben responder ante la justicia de las cuatro potencias vencedoras de la contienda mundial (Francia, Reino Unido, Estados Unidos de América y la Unión de Repúblicas Socialistas y Soviéticas). Empiezan los juicios por crímenes de lesa humanidad, de guerra y por genocidio; se dictan las sentencias, caso resuelto, ¿no? Nada más lejano de la realidad. Y esta vez, Netflix, implementando un poco la ficción (Red Odessa) con la realidad, ha hecho una serie sencillamente única.
Nazi hunters who seek not only revenge for the atrocious crimes of which they were victims, but also to bring to justice those fundamental members of what was the best orchestrated genocide in the history of humanity: the Holocaust. A story that includes the classic drama typical of Spanish productions, but which does not lack criteria to explain the importance of bringing the worst murderers in history before a court of law. Based on the controversial but well-documented story of Otto Skorzeny in Franco's Spain after the war, this production of the streaming giant takes us to a point that has not been treated too much in history.
In other words, it is estimated that over 250,000 people, including collaborators, officers, NCOs, male and female guards, train operators, bureaucrats, contractors, policemen, detectives, and a host of other people and professions (or trades) were directly or indirectly involved in carrying out the genocide of millions of Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, political dissidents of any nationality and anyone else who fell under the German yoke between 1933 and 1945. And this is not at my discretion, these figures are available at the Yad Vashem Museum in Israel. Of that number of perpetrators, only a handful (literally) were tried. The question that arises all by itself is: what about the others?
Cazadores de nazis que buscan no solo vengarse ante los crímenes atroces de los que fueron víctimas, sino llevar a la justicia a aquellos integrantes fundamentales de lo que fue el genocidio mejor orquestado en la historia de la humanidad: el Holocausto. Una historia que incluye el clásico drama propio de las producciones españolas, pero que no carece de criterio para explicar la importancia de llevar ante una corte judicial a los peores asesinos de la historia. Basada en la polémica pero bien documentada historia de Otto Skorzeny en la España de Franco, después de la Guerra, esta producción del gigante del streaming nos lleva a un punto que no ha sido demasiado tratado en la historia.
Dicho de otro modo, se estima que más de 250.000 personas, entre colaboradores, oficiales, suboficiales, guardianes masculinos y femeninos, operadores de trenes, burócratas, contratistas, policías, detectives, y un fin de otras personas y profesiones (u oficios) participaron de modo directo u indirecto en la realización del genocidio de millones de judíos, gitanos, homosexuales, disidentes políticos de cualquier nacionalidad y cualquier persona que cayera bajo el yugo alemán entre 1933 y 1945. Y esto no es a criterio mío, éstas cifras están disponibles en el Museo Yad Vashem de Israel. De esa cantidad de perpetradores, sólo se juzgó a un puñado (literalmente). La pregunta que surge sola es: ¿y los demás?
Part of this question is answered in "Jaguar". A series that owes its name to a particular event, which I won't reveal so as not to spoiler but which is as fantastic as it is American. Now, it is worth noting that this series is notable for not having too much budget, since certain scenes with violence or chase are not well done, due to what I consider to be cuts within the budget for special effects. However, what this incredible story uncovers is wonderful. How society (in this case, Spanish society in the 60's) treats its own concentration camp survivors, how an entire regime will do almost anything to cover up for war criminals and make it "as if nothing ever happened".
Parte de esta interrogante es respondida en "Jaguar". Una serie que debe su nombre a un particular evento, que no revelaré para no hacer spoiler pero que es tan fantástico como americano. Ahora bien, cabe destacar que esta serie se nota que no contó con demasiado presupuesto, puesto que ciertas escenas con violencia o persecución no están bien logradas, debido a lo que yo considero son recortes dentro del presupuesto para efectos especiales. Sin embargo, lo que destapa esta increíble historia es maravilloso. Cómo la sociedad (en este caso, la española de los años 60's) trata a sus propios sobrevivientes de los campos de concentración, como un régimen entero hace casi cualquier cosa para cubrir a criminales de guerra y hacer "como si nada, jamás, hubiese sucedido".
In addition, within the psychological background, one can see without much effort the open wounds of a group of people who directly or indirectly carry with them the remnants of a past that does not allow them to live in peace. A man who no longer believes in God and faces the reality of a life alone, the son of a survivor who has been cared for by the Kapo (a figure in the concentration camps who acted as a foreman and whose aim was to control the others) who killed all his comrades? A girl who saw her father killed in front of her eyes, cruelly and coldly just because it seemed "right" to a Nazi officer.
As you can see, hatred, resentment, the sense of true justice and freedom (as well as the cost of protecting it) are some of the nuances that we can see in "Jaguar", a story that will make you think (and remember) certain things that seem to have been forgotten. A series that particularly surprised me so much that it has inspired me to write this post. And for those of you who might be wondering, it's a 2021 production. Relatively new and available (as far as I know) on all subscription types of this famous streaming platform. For those who like good stories, this is definitely the series to watch. Totally recommended, and yes, pay close attention to the historical details.
Además, dentro del trasfondo psicológico, se puede apreciar sin mucho esfuerzo las heridas abiertas de un grupo de personas que de manera directa o indirecta cargan consigo los retazos de un pasado que no les deja vivir con paz. Un hombre que ya no cree en Dios y enfrente la realidad de una vida sola, el hijo de un sobreviviente que ha sido cuidado por el Kapo (figura en los campos de concentración que hacía de capataz y que tenía como objetivo controlar a los demás inclusos) que mató a todos sus compañeros... Una niña que vio como su padre moría frente a sus ojos, con crueldad y frialdad solo por el hecho de que a un oficial nazi le parecía lo "correcto".
Como verán, el odio, el rencor, el sentido de la verdadera justicia y la libertad (además, de su costo para resguardarla) son algunos de los matices que podemos ver dentro de "Jaguar", una historia que te hará pensar (y recordar) ciertas cosas que parecen haber quedado en el olvido. Una serie que en lo particular me sorprendió tanto, que me ha inspirado para realizar este post. Y para quienes se lo puedan preguntar, es una realización del 2021. Relativamente nueva y que está disponible (hasta donde sé) en todos los tipos de suscripción de esta famosa plataforma de streaming. A quienes les gusten las buenas historias, sin lugar a dudas esta es la serie que deben ver. Totalmente recomendado, y eso sí, presten mucha atención a los detalles históricos.
