Les 7 Vies de Léa: Everything about the new French obsession [ENG/ESP]
A few days ago, one of the saleswomen at the company where I work recommended a series I was watching. I've gone into a kind of apathy with all streaming content, since I don't have much time to concentrate on watching very long productions or many chapters. But, I gave this recommendation a chance, because the main premise seemed at least interesting to me.
Then I found out that Netflix had recently released it, but I didn't waste my time reading any reviews, but gave it a chance and started watching it. France makes excellent productions, although they are usually complex themes, which let us see the idiosyncrasies of the Gallic country, so when I found out that this serious one was coming from that country, my expectations went up.
Besides, it is set in the nineties, another aspect that makes it interesting. But, as soon as I started watching "The 7 lives of Lea" (Les 7 vies de Léa), I realized that it was a series full of teenagers with existential problems, however, although it is not my target I must say that I gave it a chance because it is entertaining.
Another aspect to highlight is the time travel theme, which I became addicted to with "Dark", the mythical German series. The reality is that all these factors added together, made me decide to stay glued to the screen for at least a week. The title plays an important role, Lea has to live 7 lives, 7 people involved in an alleged murder, 7 days that consecutive.
The premise is simple, but it doesn't stop calling our attention that, even if they are things we have already seen such as time travel, body swaps or teen series with a desire not to live, they still continue to entertain us in one way or another. What is this series about, today I have prepared a review in which I will try not to have spoilers.
Hace algunos días, una de las vendedoras de la compañía en donde trabajo, me recomendó una serie que estaba viendo. Yo he entrado en una especie de apatía con todo el contenido streaming, ya que no tengo mucho tiempo para concentrarme en ver producciones muy largas o de muchos capítulos. Pero, le di una oportunidad a esta recomendación, porque la premisa principal me parecía por lo menos interesante.
Luego me enteré de que Netflix la había estrenado hace poco, pero no perdí mi tiempo leyendo ninguna crítica, sino que le di la oportunidad y comencé a verla. Francia hace producciones excelentes, aunque por lo general son temas complejos, que dejan ver la idiosincrasia del país galo, así que al enterarme de que esta seria era procedente de ese país, mis expectativas subieron.
Además, está ambientada en los años noventa, otro aspecto que la hace interesante. Pero, en cuanto comencé a ver “Las 7 vidas de Lea” (Les 7 vies de Léa), me di cuenta de que era una serie llena de adolescentes con problemas existenciales, sin embargo, aunque no es mi target debo decir que le di una oportunidad porque es entretenida.
Otro aspecto a resaltar, es la temática de viajes en el tiempo de la cual me volví adicto con “Dark” la mítica serie alemana. La realidad es que todos esos factores sumados, hicieron que me decantara por quedarme pegado en la pantalla por lo menos una semana. El título juega un papel importante, Lea tiene que vivir 7 vidas, 7 personas implicadas en un presunto asesinato, 7 días que consecutivos.
La premisa es simple, pero no deja de llamar la atención que, aunque sean cosas que ya hemos visto como los viajes en el tiempo, intercambios de cuerpo o series de adolescentes con ganas de no vivir, todavía nos sigan entreteniendo de una u otra manera. ¿De qué va a esta serie?, hoy les he preparado una reseña en la cual trataré de que no haya spoilers.
Synopsis
Léa (Raïka Hazanavicius) is a 17 year old teenager with a lot of existential problems. She narrates her life in voice-over, while partying and drinking as much vodka as she can. Lea feels lonely among all those people who seem to be carefree, or pretending to be fine. She staggers up to a dealer and asks him for a pill. He refuses, but Lea steals all the drug ammunition he has and runs away. She has decided to take them all, to kill herself. Then she walks away erratically, drops awkwardly and tries to elucidate what she has found: a skeletal hand with a bracelet on its wrist protrudes from the sand. She has found a body.
Her parents pick her up at the police station. Her mom scolds her and her dad is left doing what he does best: keeping quiet. Once home, she enters her room, falls asleep and wakes up in a male body, he is Ismael (Khalil Ben Gharbia), a teenager of Arab descent who lives with his father, his dream is to be a musician, but he suffers from constant xenophobic and racist attacks. The life of everyone around him revolves around this brat. Lea doesn't realize what year it is until she looks at a poster for Terminator 2 in a movie theater, (as if it's something we all take for granted) it's 1991 and everything has changed.
A woman named Patricia(Anne Azoulay) gets Ishmael and drags him to an audition her brother was talking about earlier. Then Lea, realizes that her parents were friends with this boy and meets the younger versions of them who were the guitarist and drummer in the band they formed. Ismael works in an apple orchard with his father, but the owner of this land mistreats his son Pye(Renaud Rutten) and he in turn discriminates against Ismael.
Lea finds a notebook with Ismael's songs and buries it in a place she knows, to look for it as soon as she is herself again. She falls asleep and returns to the place where she has buried that notebook, it is 2021. She discovers that what happened to her is real and that she will have to live the lives of all those involved, Sandra (Rebecca Williams), her parents Karine and Stéphane (Marguerite Thiam Donnadieu and Théo Fernandez respectively), Patricia, Pye and Ismael himself. He then decides to try to investigate who killed Ismael, with whom he falls in love, (everyone seems to be in love with this boy) trying to reverse the past, with consequences in the future.
Sinopsis
Lea(Raïka Hazanavicius) es una adolescente de 17 años con bastantes problemas existenciales. Ella narra su vida en voz en off, mientras va de fiesta bebiendo todo el vodka que puede. Lea se siente sola entre todas aquellas personas que parecen estar libres de preocupaciones, o fingiendo estar bien. Ella se tambalea hasta llegar a un dealer y le pide una pastilla. Él se la niega, pero Lea roba todas las municiones de drogas que este tiene y huye. Ha decidido tomarlas todas, suicidarse. Luego se va caminando erráticamente, se deja caer torpemente y trata de dilucidar lo que ha encontrado: una mano esquelética con un brazalete en su muñeca sobresale de la arena. Ha encontrado un cuerpo.
Sus padres la recogen en la estación de policía. Su mamá la regaña y su papá se queda haciendo lo que mejor hace: guardar silencio. Ya en su casa entra a su habitación, se queda dormida y se despierta en un cuerpo masculino, él es Ismael (Khalil Ben Gharbia), un adolescente de ascendencia árabe que vive junto a su padre, su sueño es ser músico, pero sufre de constantes ataques xenófobos y racistas. La vida de todos los que le rodean gira alrededor de este mocoso. Lea no se da cuenta de que año es hasta que mira un poster de Terminator 2 en un cine, (como si fuera algo que todos damos por hecho) es 1991 y todo ha cambiado.
Una mujer llamada Patricia(Anne Azoulay) consigue a Ismael y lo arrastra a una audición de la que su hermano estaba hablando antes. Entonces Lea, se da cuenta de que sus papás eran amigos de este chico y conoce las versiones más jóvenes de ellos los cuales eran el guitarrista y el baterista de la banda que formaban. Ismael trabaja en un manzanal con su padre, pero el dueño de estas tierras maltrata a su hijo Pye(Renaud Rutten) y este a su vez discrimina a Ismael.
Lea encuentra un cuaderno con las canciones de Ismael y lo entierra en un lugar que conoce, para buscarlo en cuanto vuelva a ser ella misma. Se duerme y regresa al sitio donde ha enterrado aquel cuaderno, es 2021. Descubre que lo que le ocurre es real y que tendrá que vivir la vida de todos los involucrados, Sandra (Rebecca Williams), sus padres Karine y Stéphane (Marguerite Thiam Donnadieu y Théo Fernández respectivamente), Patricia, Pye y la del propio Ismael. Entonces decide tratar de investigar quien mato a Ismael, del cual se enamora, (todos parecen estar enamorados de este chico) tratando de revertir el pasado, con consecuencias en el futuro.
My Take
If you are very demanding I will not recommend you to take a look at it. To me it seems to fulfill the main role of any production, which is to entertain. In many stretches, it felt like I was reading a Wattpad novel, but I guess I'm not part of the target audience for this series.
It's not that I was uncomfortable with these details either, I just think there were elements that weren't so striking in my opinion. The seams were visible many times, implausible things (and yes I know it's fiction, but it's that they go too far) and that didn't connect so well with the story, such as why it took so long to find a body that was exposed. 30 years is too long, even for a relationship.
Even if it was a different time, I know few cases of people having a life together after high school. But, it is true that the death of this boy made the whole cast unhappy. The world of The 7 Lives of Lea revolves around Ismael, that's the essence. Although I think they went a bit overboard with the adoration that this group of individuals felt for the boy.
Mi Opinión
Si eres muy exigente no te recomendaré que le eches un vistazo. A mí me parece que cumple con el rol principal de cualquier producción, el cual es entretener. En muchos tramos, parecía que estaba leyendo una novela en Wattpad, pero supongo que no soy parte del público para el cual está dirigido esta serie.
Tampoco es que llegara a incomodarme estos detalles, solamente creo que existieron elementos no tan llamativos a mi parecer. Se dejaban ver las costuras muchas veces, cosas inverosímiles (y si sé que es ficción, pero es que se pasan) y que no conectaban tan bien con la historia, como por ejemplo porque tardaron tanto en encontrar un cuerpo que estaba expuesto. 30 años es demasiado tiempo, incluso para una relación.
Aunque fueran otros tiempos, conozco pocos casos de personas que tienen una vida juntos después de la secundaria. Pero, sí que es verdad que la muerte de este chico hizo infelices a todo el cast. El mundo de Las 7 vidas de Lea, gira en torno a Ismael, es la esencia. Aunque considero que se sobrepasaron un poco con la adoración que este grupo de individuos sentía por el muchacho.
Likewise, it is a product trying to be many things at the same time, youth series, criminal investigation, a bit of suspense, depression, misogyny, machismo, social inequality, xenophobia, hate crimes, racism and a lot of issues that were already latent in the nineties and are still in force. Perhaps this is the ingredient for the series to catch the viewer from chapter 1, it is a mixture at least well achieved.
The need for direction and to find purpose in life, I think it connects with a world where young people know less and less how to deal with anxiety and problems at home. Lea's 7 Lives is not a series to give multiple interpretations, it is just one of those productions that will not go down in the annals of history as the best in the world, but neither will it be known as something lousy. It was a formidable work, that can serve to entertain you one of these days.
Igualmente, es un producto intentando ser muchas cosas al mismo tiempo, serie juvenil, investigación criminal, un poco de suspenso, depresión, misoginia, machismo, desigualdad social, xenofobia, crímenes de odio, racismo y un montón de problemáticas que ya eran latentes en los noventa y que siguen estando vigentes. Quizás sea ese el ingrediente para que la serie atrape al espectador desde el capítulo 1, es una mezcla por lo menos bien lograda.
La necesidad de dirección y de encontrarle propósito a la vida, creo que conecta con un mundo donde los jóvenes saben cada vez menos como lidiar con la ansiedad y los problemas en su casa. Las 7 vidas de Lea, no es una serie para darle múltiples interpretaciones, solo es una producción de esas que no van a salir en los anales de la historia como lo mejor del mundo, pero tampoco ser conocidas como algo pésimo. Fue un trabajo formidable, que te puede servir para entretenerte un día de estos.

Es cierto lo que dices que aunque son cosas que siempre vemos y están repetidas, igual nos siguen entreteniendo, me parece una buena película para pasar el rato, además de que trata temas que me llaman la atención, como viajes en el tiempo e investigación criminal, hiciste una buena reseña, fue bueno que le dieras otra oportunidad a la película, voy a intentar verla pronto.

Cuando leí lo de los adolescentes dije ay no, aunque lo de los problemas existenciales me llamó la atención y no la descarté, y cuando leí lo de las siete vidas revivió el interés, porque suena como algo atractivo, que se puede ver dejando pasar lo de los dramas adolescentes. Pero entonces leo que si eres una persona exigente quizá esto no sea para ti y volví a dar un paso atrás 🤣😂 con todo eso de las costuras que dejan entrever cosas, ah, pero luego dices que la mezcla de los temas que se tratan está bien lograda y vuelvo a caer. 😂

Es que trato de resaltar, lo bueno y lo malo, por igual. También hay muchos problemas de adultos, al ser una historia de viajes en el tiempo existen 2 versiones del mismo personaje.
Se me olvidó destacar el vestuario y lo poco que se parecían los jóvenes con los adultos. Una característica que en Dark si se supo manejar muy bien. Es un cóctel que debes lanzartelo sin pensar, ni leer muchas críticas. Puede que te terminé gustando.
JAJAJA así es, que sepas apreciar y diferenciar las dos cosas es bueno y que no te ciegues por una sola hace que des una buena reseña.
Pues si, dark es una obra de arte. Quien sabe, puede que si me termine gustando, aunque eso de wattpad no me atrae mucho JAJAJAJA
France movies are not so much my thing. This review seem like I won't be 💯% captured into the reality just like you weren't so much into the plot.
I'll check it out and also leave a review if I find it interesting.
