A few days ago, I woke up one Sunday wanting to watch a movie I had found thanks to a recommendation on TikTok. The girl promised that we were going to find a horror movie with quite a few unexpected twists, that and the fact that the plot involved two teenagers made me take into account this recommendation. I must say that I hardly watch horror movies made by streaming services, but things change if it's on HBO Max, a platform that in my opinion has a better catalog.
The premise was very simple, but from minute one you know, what is going to happen at the end. However, I stayed watching it and I must say that there are several unexpected twists, which are enough to keep you entertained. And if you add to that a dysfunctional family, a troubled town and a violent, drug-addicted older brother, the "toxic family" formula always seems to work in the world of cinema.
The story at times manages to hook you with a fairly simple horror that at times stands out and at others, seems to be a darkly humorous psychological thriller for teenagers. And although Alex McAulay, director and writer of this film, never goes too far with the script, his feature debut is at least enjoyable, entertaining and quite encouraging. McAulay, manages to squeeze the talent of the actors who accompany him and I think that, although it is not a film that will go down in the annals of cinema, if it is a good choice to pass the time. And here's why.
Unos cuantos días atrás, me desperté un domingo con ganas de ver una película que había encontrado gracias a una recomendación en TikTok. La chica prometía que nos íbamos a encontrar con una película de terror con bastantes giros inesperados, eso y que la trama involucraba a dos adolescentes me hizo tomar en cuenta esta recomendación. Debo decir que casi no veo películas de terror hechas por servicios de streaming, pero la cosa cambia si está en HBO Max, plataforma que a mi parecer tiene un mejor catálogo.
La premisa era muy sencilla, pero desde el minuto uno sabes, que va a pasar al final. Sin embargo, me quedé viéndola y debo decir que si existen varios giros inesperados, que son suficientes para mantenerte entretenido. Y además, si a eso le agregas una familia disfuncional, un pueblo problemático y un hermano mayor violento y drogadicto, la fórmula de “familia tóxica”, siempre parece funcionar en el mundo del cine.
La historia por momentos logra engancharte con un terror bastante simple que por momentos destaca y por otros, parece ser un thriller psicológico de humor negro para adolescentes. Y aunque Alex McAulay, director y escritor de este film, nunca llega a ir demasiado lejos con el guion, su debut en el cine es por lo menos ameno, entretenido y bastante alentador. McAulay, logra exprimir el talento de los actores que le acompañan y creo que, aunque no es una película que vaya a figurar en los anales del cine, si es una buena opción para pasar el rato. Y aquí te cuento el porqué.
Don't tell a soul, tells the story of two brothers who live with their mother Carol (Mena Suvari), in a house where money is scarce, but there are plenty of problems. Their father has died in strange circumstances, while their mother is addicted to painkillers and spends her life in an armchair complaining and watching news about serial killers. Their two sons have opposite personalities, but deep down they both have dark thoughts that we get to know as the sequences unfold.
Joey (Jack Dylan Grazer) is a fearful boy, quite attached to his vicious older brother Matt (Fionn Whitehead), with whom he has a love-hate relationship that could be defined as nefarious. One day, Matt decides to pressure Joey to break into the house of a neighbor who apparently lives in the suburbs, the script never explains how everyone seems to know that there is money in that house, but well, without that we would have no movie. They do manage to steal $12,000 in a cookie tin, but things get ugly when they're discovered by a security guard prowling the area.
Dave Hamby (Rainn Wilson) immediately sets off on a chase through the woods to catch the teens, but in a twist of fate he falls straight into a hole and breaks his ankle. Both brothers suddenly find themselves at a crossroads, but Matt decides it's best to let the man die in the hole. However, Joey, who is not exactly the smartest brother, feels remorse and begins a series of visits to Hamby, where he gets to observe the lack of a father figure that this boy has. And well, he brings him medicine, a blanket and even a walkie-talkie that he uses to communicate with him.
Matt's mistreatment, the thirst for revenge of a mistreated younger brother, a twist you didn't expect in the second act of the film, serve to take us into a series of events that we already know where they are going to end, but when they happen they don't happen as you imagined, but they are better, are you ready for more?
No le digas a nadie, nos cuenta la historia de dos hermanos que viven junto a su madre Carol (Mena Suvari), en una casa, donde falta el dinero, pero sobran los problemas. Su papá ha muerto en extrañas circunstancias, mientras que su mamá es adicta a los analgésicos y pasa su vida en un sillón quejándose y viendo noticias sobre asesinos en serie. Sus dos hijos tienen personalidades opuestas, pero en el fondo ambos tienen pensamientos oscuros que vamos conociendo a medida que se desarrollan las secuencias.
Joey (Jack Dylan Grazer) es un chico miedoso, bastante apegado a su vicioso hermano mayor Matt (Fionn Whitehead), con el que tiene una relación amor – odio que podría definir como nefasta. Dave Hamby (Rainn Wilson), en seguida, emprende una persecución a través del bosque para atrapar a los adolescentes, pero en una mala jugada del destino cae directo a un hoyo fracturándose un tobillo. Ambos hermanos de repente se encuentran en una encrucijada, pero Matt, decide que lo mejor es dejar que el hombre muera en el hoyo. Sin embargo, Joey, que no es precisamente el hermano más listo, siente remordimiento y comienza una serie de visitas a Hamby, donde se logra observar la falta de una figura paterna que tiene este muchacho. It is almost impossible, to tell my opinion without spoilers, but despite the difficulty I am going to try, because I am not going to tell you the best parts of the movie. First of all, having a cast that has participated in movies like It and Shazam, is not always synonymous of quality, but, in ** Don't tell a soul**, the actors seem to be the most important piece of the story, especially for Rainn Wilson and Fionn Whitehead, who I think as villains get all the credits. The twists are wonderful, unexpected and just enough, although many things in the film happen too fast.
This film is perfectly cast, as a psychological thriller with teenagers with real problems. These are young men with serious toxic masculinity issues and an absurd power play. And the best part is that it never feels forced, although the performance of the actress playing the mom left a lot to be desired, the rest of the cast and even the supporting characters did really well.
Es casi imposible, darles mi opinión sin spoilers, pero a pesar de la dificultad lo voy a intentar, porque no les voy a contar las mejores partes de la película. En primer lugar, contar con un elenco que haya participado en películas como It y Shazam, no siempre es sinónimo de calidad, pero, en No le digas a nadie, los actores parecen ser la pieza más importante de la historia, sobre todo por Rainn Wilson y Fionn Whitehead, que creo que como villanos se llevan todos los créditos. Los giros son maravillosos, inesperados y suficientes, aunque muchas cosas en la película suceden demasiado rápido.
Este filme está perfectamente moldeado, como un thriller psicológico con adolescentes con problemas reales. Son jóvenes con serios problemas de masculinidad tóxica y con un juego de poder absurdo. Y Lo mejor, es que nunca se siente forzado, aunque la actuación de la actriz que interpretaba a la mamá si dejo mucho que desear, el resto del elenco y hasta los personajes secundarios lo hicieron realmente bien.
It is interesting the development of the characters, because while the relationship between the captor and the captive develops, both discover their true personalities. But, as the film progresses, we are plunged into serious questions about how we should act in such a situation, should Joey go against his brother and help Hamby, or should he join Matt and finish with that stranger, but the story itself gives us the answers to these questions and we realize that sometimes it is not easier to trust a stranger who shows us a little affection, than a family member.
And there in lies the secret of ** Don't tell a soul** to connect with the audience, that, despite not being a perfect film, it manages to take you to the end in a satisfactory way. That's why I recommend it, I think it has a good length, it's interesting and above all a hidden gem, one of those that you will enjoy a lot.
Es interesante el desarrollo que tienen los personajes, porque mientras la relación entre el captor y el cautivo se desarrolla, ambos nos van descubriendo sus verdaderas personalidades. Pero, mientras la película avanza, nos va sumiendo en serios cuestionamientos de como deberíamos actuar en tal situación, ¿debería Joey ir en contra de su hermano y ayudar a Hamby?, o mejor ¿debería unirse a Matt y acabar con aquel desconocido?, pero la misma historia nos va dando las respuestas a estas interrogantes y nos damos cuenta de que a veces no es más fácil confiar en un extraño que nos muestra un poco de cariño, que en un familiar.
Y allí es que donde creo que radica el secreto de No le digas a nadie para conectar con la audiencia, que, a pesar de no ser un filme perfecto, si logra llevarte al final de una manera satisfactoria. Por eso se las recomiendo, creo que tiene una buena duración, es interesante y sobre todo una joya escondida, de esas que vas a disfrutar mucho.

Ah, I saw this one some time ago, I reviewed it at the time. I liked it a lot, the moral debate of the younger brother in the face of what they do, the relationship he establishes with the victim. For me it was also a pleasant surprise.
