I’ve been thinking a lot about how to keep my spark and my light alive in an environment as hostile as the one I live in; it’s really hard to come up with ideas every day to get myself out of this rut.

When we live in an environment full of prejudices and taboos, leading a normal life gets complicated. I could say, “Screw it all,” and that’s that—that it’s okay to ignore what others say and that it doesn’t matter whether they talk about it or not. But then I ask myself, but it’s family, and the thing is, no matter how hard we try, you can never shake them off, and you’ll always live with that sadness and the desire to be more.

They recently found out that I have tattoos. The thing is, I’ve had them for two years and I’ve always kept them under wraps—at least I hadn’t let my mom see them—and when she found out, she made a huge fuss, but she did it because she was focused on what others would say about her and the way she raised her daughters, and I ask myself, why should I care? Do I really care what others think about whether or not I get a tattoo?

The real irony of family is that sometimes they ask us to be authentic—but only as far as their own comfort allows. Today I wonder how many decisions we make out of fear of shattering the image others have built of us. For now, I choose to stick with my own answer: other people’s opinions don’t stick to my skin, but my story does.

Keeping the light burning in the darkness doesn’t mean I don’t feel the blow—it means deciding that the weight of other people’s traditions won’t crush who I am.

In the end, I realized something: the skin I inhabit is mine, not a canvas for fulfilling other people’s expectations. Understanding that my mom’s fear isn’t mine has been the first step toward not letting it extinguish my light. She worries about how I look; I choose to ignore her. I’ll keep marking my body if I feel like it—not out of rebellion, but because every mark is a reminder that my life belongs solely
to me.
