Making my grandmother Pancha's cough syrup. [EN] // [ES]

There are times in life when traditional medicine, the one prescribed by the doctor we usually go to, does not have the expected result, and we have to resort to those old grandma's recipes, the ones we used to run away from when we were kids because they tasted horrible, or at least that's what we said, but they certainly relieved our ailments, and the main ingredient of those magic potions was the love with which they were prepared, of that I have no doubt. My Mathias has been sick again with the flu, even though he has been treated for more than 3 months with a treatment recommended by the pulmonologist, he only got a few drops of rain and the next day his chest was very congested and with a cough like a dying dog, the truth is that I was very upset, because it is not that I have spent only a couple of dollars in that treatment, but also very seriously it was only a few drops and the cold wind.

This situation made me wonder, maybe her immune system is so bad that she couldn't even stand to get wet, but on the other hand I remember that we went to the beach just a few weeks ago, she spent the whole day at the beach, plus she was all the time with wet clothes and nothing happened to her thank God, so after a week of administering the new and reinforced treatment she was prescribed, I decided to listen to my aunt and prepare her that purple onion syrup with honey that she hated so much but that helped me a lot in my childhood when I had those bad flus. After deciding to prepare this syrup, I wanted to do some research on the properties of both honey and red onion because, although it is an old recipe, I like to know what I am giving to my little one.

As for the red onion, it contains both vitamins and minerals that help prevent and treat flus, colds and colds, it contains flavonoids and antioxidants that also make it perfect for strengthening the immune system, as well as being inflammatory and antimicrobial. Honey, apart from containing sugar, fructose, glucose and sucrose, contains antioxidants, flavonoids and phenols, which contribute to cardiovascular health when used as a substitute for cane sugar, and what attracts me most about it is that it helps soothe coughs in children, and adults too to tell the truth, although it should be noted that in children under 1 year should not be administered because it can cause botulism, so although my son is about to turn 6 years old, I am giving him this syrup with some caution. Preparing it is really simple, however, the wait to consume it is a little long so to speak, so I show you how to prepare it and I tell you right now that it is wonderful.

Ingredients

1 Cup Chopped red onion
10 Tbsp Honey bees
1 Sterilized glass jar

Preparation

Preparation time 24 Hours Minutes
Cooking Time N/A

Once the red onion is finely chopped, we will add it to the glass jar, we can use a mayonnaise jar, to this jar we will also add the 10 tablespoons of honey.

We will shake very well so that everything is integrated and we will place it in a place where it can be in the light of the sun and the moon, as they say in my town, this is to put it in the sun and serene, we will leave it for 24 hours. With this process the honey will extract all the components of the onion making these two ingredients emulsify.

After 24 hours we will obtain as I said before, an emulsion of the onion with the honey, the honey will no longer be so viscous, but rather liquid, take the contents of the jar (honey and onion) and pass through a fine sieve or a double piece of gauze, this to separate the onion from the liquid, and place it in the same jar where we left it macerating, and ready our cough syrup, so easy.

As I mentioned before, the syrup is wonderful, my Mathias' cough has almost completely stopped, this syrup is estimated to help dissolve phlegm and for this reason it is considered an expectorant, and I must say that it has been just as some publications on the internet promise, in this case I can say that the recipe of my beloved grandmother has worked as expected, and unlike me, my son has not hated the taste of the syrup, because to tell the truth its taste is not bad at all, it was me who hated medicines hahaha.

Ingredientes

1 Taza Cebolla morada picadita
