Example of resilience and resistance - A Small Light - Review [EN] // [ES]

Much has been told about the story of Anne Frank from her already famous diary, published in 1947, where she details what Anne saw as an adventure, which they lived for a period of just over two years, hiding in the attic of the offices. from his father's company, but who helped them survive during this time? Who brought them food during that dark time that lived in Holland? During the Nazi occupation, where Jews were persecuted; It is in A Small Light, where we learn a little more about the history of Miep Gies, the secretary of Otto Frank, father of Anne Frank.

An ABC Signature production in association with Keshet Studios for National Geographic, airing on Star+, Disney+ and National Geographic, opening May 1 of this year, telling the story of Miep Gies Bel Powley, the secretary who did everything possible to hide 8 Jews from Nazi persecution, including Anne Frank Billie Boullet, and her family, along with the Van Pels family and their friend Dr Pfeffer . Set at the time of the Nazi invasion of Holland, it tells the story of Miep, a young woman adopted by a Dutch family, since she was given up for adoption by her mother in Vienna, which had already been besieged by the Nazis and so that Miep would not died of starvation, she was sent to her adoptive family in Amsterdam.

A girl who would rather party than party, when forced by her parents to find a job or get married, bumps into Otto Frank Liev Schreiber, who puts her to the test for a few weeks, to give her the position to which she aspired and which would later give rise to a good friendship, which was born due to the fact that her stories of displacement thanks to the war are quite similar, making Miep establish a stronger bond with Otto Frank and his family, who asks her for help to hide his family, since they are Jews, they would be persecuted. Miep did not hesitate to agree to help her boss and friend and her family. Otto already had everything planned and gave instructions to Miep to do the whole operation.

This miniseries of only 8 episodes, literally made me eat all my nails, nerves and imagine all the misfortunes that these people had to live for those more than 2 years in hiding, terrified at the thought of being discovered, and after being found, The hell they had to live through, and of which only Otto Frank remained alive, being the one who received Anne's famous diary, which a couple of years later he published, as was Anne's wish, who at the age of 13 already wanted to be a famous writer, who could not see how famous she has become.

Recorded in Hradec Králové, Prague and Amsterdam, it has a set design and photography that undoubtedly transports us to the time, the costumes and the script, without a doubt very well produced, you can feel the despair, the resilience, the pain and the sadness, not only for the Frank and Van Pels families, but also for all the families, and friends that both Miep and Jan Gies Joe Cole, Miep's husband, they had to live through all these years, the sadness and frustration when the Franks were betrayed and found, having the luck of meeting a Nazi guard who he took pity on her and set her free, because if it had not been that way, her fate would have been totally different.

The fact that it caused my onychophagia to return, makes me see that the miniseries really conveys much of what they wanted to capture in it, that is to say, they did a good job, and these actors did an excellent staging of each of their characters. To understand beyond what has been said, the adventures they had to do to be able to find food for these 8 people, in an environment of restriction of food and personal hygiene items, to see how they were also part of the resistance that worked to help all the persecuted, to collaborate with those who hid or relocated children so they would not be killed, is really a very touching story and this series undoubtedly grabs you from the first chapter.

One of the saddest endings I have ever seen, and even more knowing that the story was real. Speaking a little about Miep, she managed to live to the age of 100, and it was not until 2023, that I learned of her existence, because I must say that, although I have heard a lot about the story of Anne Frank and I have seen a couple of documentaries about her, to date I have not had the opportunity to read her diary, something that I have just put on my to-do list. If you ask me, I totally recommend it. What rating would I give it? 9.5/10, and this, because there were details that I would like to be more in depth, like, for example, to see a little more of Miep's achievements after all this sad story, because these were not the only achievements of this secretary who represented a little light, a ray of hope for these families that she helped.
