What Dreams May Come - REVIEW - A cruel irony [ENG-ESP]

I can count on my fingers the films that have touched my heart, and with which I have felt a catharsis. Few are the films that can go beyond mere entertainment and leave us something significant, this is the case of What Dreams May Come from 1998 starring the endearing Robin Williams, hence the title of my publication and soon you will know why. that.

Puedo contar con los dedos de mis manos las películas que me han llegado al corazón, y con las cuales he sentido una catarsis. Pocas son las películas que pueden pasar del mero entretenimiento y dejar en nosotros algo significativo, este es el caso de What Dreams May Come del año 1998 protagonizada por el entrañable Robin Williams, de ahí el título de mi publicación y dentro de poco sabrán el por qué.

I don't know where to start, but the feeling that invades me is the desire to have enjoyed this jewel of a movie in the cinema, it is literally feeling inside a painting, and in fact it has a lot to do with the plot. Robin Williams plays the pediatrician Chris Nielsen who meets the artist Annie Collins played by the actress Annabella Sciorra on a trip to Switzerland, later they get married and have two children Ian and Mary, everything was going well until one day misfortune touched the door of her home, her children lost their lives in an accident, leaving both parents destroyed, especially her mother, for whom it was very difficult to overcome the loss of her children.

No sé por donde empezar, pero el sentimiento que me invade es el deseo de poder haber disfrutado esta joya de película en el cine, es sentirse literalmente dentro de una pintura, y de hecho tiene mucho que ver en la trama. Robin Williams interpreta al pediatra Chris Nielsen quien conoce a la artista Annie Collins interpretada por la actriz Annabella Sciorra en un viaje a Suiza, tiempo después se casan y tienen dos hijos Ian y Mary, todo marchaba bien hasta que un día la desgracia toco a la puerta de su hogar, sus hijos perdieron la vida en un accidente quedando ambos padres destruidos, en especial su madre, para quien fue muy difícil poder superar la pérdida de sus hijos.

4 years later, Chris also loses his life in an accident, leaving Annie totally alone, with no desire to continue living and with the pain of having lost her entire family. Dying, Chris is confused, hears a voice trying to guide him, and sees his own funeral, unaware that he is dead. With these references Chris embarks on a journey to find his children since they are also in heaven, in the midst of this search he will understand things that he could never see when he was in the world of the living.

But now she receives the worst news and that is that Annie has committed suicide out of pain and guilt, she blames herself for the loss of her children and husband by taking her own life. Chris asks to be able to see her but they tell him that this is impossible, so he decides to risk it until he finds her since he feels they are soul mates, after finding a guide Chris goes to hell, especially where Annie is now. It is her same house, all destroyed and old, and Annie cannot remember and when she sees Chris enter she does not recognize that he is her husband, her punishment in hell is imposed by herself, being unable to have overcome her pain, she condemns herself. to feel it for eternity.

Chris logra encontrar a sus hijos en el cielo luego de atravesar algunas clase de pruebas él se da cuenta de que aprendió más de sus hijos de todo lo que vio de ellos en vida. Pero ahora recibe la peor noticia y es que Annie se ha suicidado por el dolor y la culpa, se culpa d ela perdida de sus hijos y esposo quintándose la vida. Chris pide poder verla pero le dicen que eso es imposible, entonces él decide arriesgarse hasta encontrarla ya que siente que son almas gemelas, luego de encontrar un guía Chris llega al infierno, especialmente donde se encuentra Annie ahora. Es su misma casa, toda destruida y vieja, y Annie no puede recordar y cuando ve a Chris entrar no reconoce que es su esposo, su castigo en el infierno se lo impone ella misma, al ser incapaz de haber superado su dolor, se condena a sentirlo por la eternidad.

This film is idyllic and liberating, each experience shown can become your own experience, it made me understand the appreciation we should have for our loved ones, to tell them how much we love them and how important they are, because nothing is certain. The value of sacrifice for what you love most, the metaphor of hell is beautiful, depression is not a game, and it is not a disease that only suffers from those who feel it, but their closest circle. Annie's example is enlightening regarding this fact, and I know that many of us have felt sad and meaningless at times, we should not think that it only happens in our being, our loved ones also suffer.

Esta película es idílica y liberadora, cada experiencia mostrada puede convertirse en una vivencia propia, me hizo comprender el aprecio que debemos tener hacia nuestros seres queridos, de decirles cuanto los amamos y lo importantes que son, porque nada es seguro. El valor del sacrificio por lo que más amas, la metáfora del infierno es hermosa, la depresión no es un juego, y no es una enfermedad que solo padece quien la siente, sino su círculo más cercano. El ejemplo de Annie es esclarecedor en cuanto a este hecho, y sé que muchos de nosotros nos hemos sentido tristes y sin sentido alguna vez, no debemos pensar que solo pasa en nuestro ser, también nuestros seres queridos sufren.

Chris and Annie's new opportunity represents rising from suffering and falling, to start again with more wisdom.

El amor de Chris fue tan grande que pudo rescatarla de su sufrimiento y liberarla de su infierno, ambos reciben una oportunidad para comenzar de nuevo. The cruel irony of this film is Robin Williams, I cannot understand how he could not find what he taught me in this film, I know very well that one thing is real life and another is fiction, and that the first always surpasses the second , but fiction exists precisely for that. Since the ancient Greeks, creators of theater, man has made art a necessity of the soul, and Robin Williams for me is legendary, someone who made me laugh with Peter Pan, and with the unforgettable Patch Adams, he did not find the way to overcome what always tormented him and make the decision to take his own life.

La ironía cruel de esta película es Robin Williams, no puedo entender como él no pudo encontrar lo que me enseño en esta película, se muy bien que una cosa es la vida real y otra la ficción, y que siempre la primera supera a la segunda, pero la ficción existe justamente para eso. Desde los antiguos griegos, creadores del teatro, el hombre ha hecho del arte una necesidad del alma, y Robin Williams para mi es legendario, alguien que me hizo reir con Peter Pan, y con la inolvidable Patch Adams, no encontró el camino para superar lo que siempre lo atormentó y tomar la decisión de quitarse la vida.

Visually the film is wonderful, the special effects are fantastic and very surreal, the impressionist aesthetic that it has is beautiful, since the sky landscapes represent paintings that Annie made. Photography helps a lot to achieve this impression, and it is something that I value very much, and within this film it is a plus that helps your mind to feel truly in paradise. The performances are second to none, I really liked the handling of the funny situations and the drama, I felt like I was on a real roller coaster of emotions.

Visualmente la película es una maravilla, los efectos especiales son fantásticos y muy surrealistas, la estética impresionista que tiene es hermosa, ya que los paisajes del cielo representan pinturas que Annie realizo. LA fotografía ayuda muchísimo a lograr esta impresión, y es algo que valoro muchísimo, y dentro de esta película es un plus que ayuda a tu mente a sentirse verdaderamente en el paraíso. Las actuaciones son insuperables, me gustó mucho el manejo de las situaciones graciosas y el drama, sentía que estaba en una verdadera montaña rusa de emociones.

As a final opinion, it is one of my favorite films of this genre, the fact that Robin Williams has acted makes me very fond of him, it is a very beautiful metaphor of life and of it as a journey, in which sometimes it can be a beautiful paradise or a horrible hell, but where we feel, we should never turn our backs on our loved ones, never feel satisfied but rather fill our lives with new challenges to overcome adversity, not let ourselves be overcome by sadness and depression.. Como opinión final es una de mis películas de este género favoritas, el hecho de que Robin Williams haya actuado me hace tenerle mucho cariño, es una metafora muy hermosa de la vida y de esta como un viaje, en el cual algunas veces puede ser un paraíso hermoso o un infierno horrible, pero en donde nos sintamos, jamás debemos darle la espalda a nuestros seres querido, nunca sentirnos satisfechos sino llenar nuestra vida de nuevos retos para superar las adversidades, no dejarnos vencer por la tristeza y la depresión.. Esto ha sido por hoy, espero que puedan verla, seguro quedarán maravillados como yo, me despido hasta una nueva oportunidad.
