Vintage beauty and bartering

avatar
(Edited)

Yesterday, there was a new and welcome addition to the morning market and to the McGregor retail scene. Vintage Indian saries on sale from a new resident. Not all are vintage and those that are not, are synthetic. Not entirely my cup of tea chai. The more modern ones are not nearly as beautiful as the vintage ones.

During a lull (it was really busy yesterday) I went across to look. One of them spoke to me.

I returned to my stall, scheming. Then, towards the end of the market, and as things were slowing down, N made her rounds. She visited my stand.

Paté, bread, cheese...

When it came time to pay, I asked if she was open to a trade?

Yes! I'd love that.

I didn't need a second invitation.

This roughly 80 year old silk beauty came home with me. I am working out what to make with it. Because it is traditional, the pattern and the borders are not consistent over the nearly 7 metres of fabric.

I am not going to decide in a hurry.

And there, @dswigle is a contribution, from me, to #marketfriday that is about what I "bought" at our market as opposed to what I sell!

Until next time, be well

If this post might seem familiar, it's because I'm doing two things:

  • re-vamping old recipes. As I do this, I am adding them in a file format that you can download and print. If you download recipes, buy me a coffee. Or better yet, a glass of wine....?
  • and "re-capturing" nearly two years' worth of posts.
I blog to the Hive blockchain using a number of decentralised appplications.

This was splendid @fionasfavourites !!! I love a good trade/barter any day of the week. While money is great, the trades are often much better deals. What a beautiful Sari! I would give my eye teeth for a vintage one like that. I looked them up and they are too reasonable to be truly vintage, on the sites I found.

This is not about me. :) I am glad that it worked for you nicely and I can hardly wait until I see what you will be making with this. When you do, I hope you link back to this post!

Thanks so much and have a great week ahead!

#MarketFriday has evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but, it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact of what is normal for where you live? These are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I can only hope this to be true.

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

Rules of the Road to Join #MarketFriday!

  1. Go to the market, or anywhere that you pay money for a service.
    Take pictures! Be creative!
  2. Tell us a little bit about the market or the event. What brought you there? What did you buy? How much did it cost?
  3. Post the picture(s) Of course, you should tell a little bit about the ones you post
  4. Use the MarketFriday Community Platform to post #hive-196308 (this is not required, but appreciated)
    5. Drop the link into the MarketFriday comment section so I can find it
  5. Following me and reblogging the post so more see it would be appreciated !! Not a rule, just appreciated, more vision for more views on your posts!
    7. You must put #MarketFriday by @dswigle somewhere on your post. If you don't and someone reads it, there is nothing to tie #MarketFriday to that post.
  6. Please only one post each week. Believe it not, I run out of voting power if you put in many more than that.

As always, please remember! #MarketFriday loves you!

At the market and between a group of us, we barter a lot. When I get round to transforming that Sari, I will certainly post and link.

About the vintage: and peehaps I should have explained: the pattern is not printed. The border is like a brocade. N told me, and I get this, that this is the key indicator of vintage. Another reason I shan't be making a hasty decision.

That is what these were, brocade on the border. I will have to look into it a little more. They were quite reasonable - and yes, the pattern is not printed. Thanks for pushing me towards looking once again!

That is absolutely gorgeous and the fact that you got it for a barter makes it even more special! Funny thing - the youngest just bought her very first winter coat with her own money a few days ago, and I told her she needed an old school scarf to complete the look. Although an 80 year old beauty like yours should be used for something a bit more special than every day wear... can't wait to see what you come up with!

You know what, there is sure to be fabric left and a scarf is an excellent idea! I am sure the youngest's coat is wonderful and all the more special with one's own hard earned money!
