Katie (1 of 6): ski resort. Humpbuckle Tales 113

Katie misses her winter job.

Working at the ski resort was fun, but not easy.

Long hours looking after guests: greeting, cooking, cleaning, socialising.

Then trying to find a spare few hours each day to fly down the slopes.

She takes a breath and goes to check on her mother.

Katie (2 of 6): alcohol-related incident. Humpbuckle Tales 114

Katie and Dana, the other chalet host, don't like each other.

One night, after consuming too many vodkas, Katie is harassed by two men.

Dana intervenes, sees them off, takes her home.

"If another woman's in trouble, I'll help," she says. "Even if she is a pain in my arse."

Katie (3 of 6): color wheel. Humpbuckle Tales 115

"You need to go on the Colour Wheel!" her mum shouts again.

Katie is calling from the bar in town.

It's difficult to hear over the noise, but what she does catch make no sense.

"Have you been drinking, mum?" she laughs.

Her mother gets annoyed and ends the call.

Kate (4 of 6): toy store. Humpbuckle Tales 116

Uncle Len calls Katie early one morning.

"The police caught your mother banging on the old toy store doors at three in the morning. Told them she still works there, confused that it's locked."

Katie's mum was made redundant when Lundell's closed thirty years ago.

"The doctors think it's dementia."

Katie (5 of 6) : developing now. Humpbuckle Tales 117

Katie takes her mother to a dementia specialist in London.

"The illness is developing more slowly now," the doctor says. "The new medication is working. It's still early days, but I'm hopeful we'll prevent further deterioration."

They enjoy dinner and a show, stay overnight, then catch the morning train home.

Katie (6 of 6): bullfrog. Humpbuckle Tales 118

The woman, homeless by the look of her, appears terrified.

Other passengers look away as the ticket inspector - an officious bullfrog of a man - tells her to pay up or he'll call the police.

Katie, remembering Lena, pulls a note from her purse.

"I'm paying."

She smiles at the woman.

These fifty-word stories were written using the six @freewritehouse freewrite prompts @mariannewest gave us this week (see her weekend freewrite single prompt post. Check out her Three Prompt challenge for more weekend Freewrite fun!
These are the 113th to 118th fifty-word stories in the Humpbuckle Tales series. You can find all the tales reblogged on the @humpbuckletales account.

These six stories are part of the Humpbuckle Tales series I am writing. Each tale is 50 words long. They can be read individually but when read together they make up a much bigger story. The 6 weekend freewrite stories are an obvious example of this because you can see that one follows on from another. The other tales might not be so obvious as they are sometimes set a few decades earlier or later than the others.

There are author readings available of the first 22 Humpbuckle Tales on the Humpbuckle Tales YouTube Channel or you can listen to the Humpbuckle Tales podcast.

On Hive, you can find the first 10 tales read here, and Humpbuckle Tales 11-22 are read here
