Following a book and a heart

The girl I crush on plays chess. I know the rules but I've barely had practice. Well, it's time to learn! I've been playing against her and random people on chess.com for the past few days and it's been great. Gets my head out of work, and while it's not a pc game, it's certainly a competitive thinking challenge. It's been a bit over a week. There aren't resources anywhere on how to play when somebody leaves book moves. Tough stuff.

Regardless, I've read that I should pick two openings for each side to focus on. When I'm white, I use queen's pawn. Not sure what else is there, really. Still looking stuff up. For black, sicilian defense and something else. I'll pick the two cool looking ones or something then go deep into it. Right now, I average 700 mmr on chess.com, which is okay for a beginner, I guess?

Sometimes I beat my crush. More often than not, I don't. But I'm getting better, and that makes me happy. Chess is hard to get into, but it does fit my personal self, so I can accommodate to its complexity, as long as I don't aim for master or something. A nice, cozy hobby to feed my mind. That's what I want from chess.

Prepare to get frustrated playing against people who are just as bad as you, where both of you repeatedly miss mate in 1/2 moves over and over again.

Hey it's great to see new people in here, feel free to ask whatever you need to know about chess our community will kindly answer you. I strongly recommend you 1...)e5 for black against e4 of course you can find interesting positions with others defenses however the open openings will give you a huge sight about the game

Anyways it's cool you are trying to learn new things !

I would strongly recommend to NOT try to memorize first moves now. Starting with openings will leave you wondering what to do when opponent deviates. Opening will be useful later, starting at 1200 or 1400 rating. At that time you will start to understand why certain moves in openings are played. And this why is very important part, more important than moves themselves.
