Sleep my little teddy bears, sleep.

One of the advantages of growing cacti is that you get holidays. A bit like in school where during the two months of summer most kids don't have to think of books, classes, getting up early and all that fun stuffs.

Cacti do require some care, not as much as other plants and they are way more forgiving, but they still need to be checked and watered regularly during the warmer months when they bloom and grow.

And then comes the "summer break" but in winter. The temperatures drop, the days are shorter and our spiky friends get lazy and go to sleep.
They do not grow and do not require any watering. The only worry is actually to keep them completely dry during that time, otherwise they will rot.

And since I keep all my cacti outside on the balcony and the temps are dropping I can basically forget about them until maybe late February :)
Yay for me!

A little fun fact.
In Poland, where the winters are longer and most of the time very cold, some cactus growers pack their plants into boxes and hide in the dark and cold cellars (or attics).
Yes - the plants survive. It is cold, dark and dry. They sleep like teddy bears in their caves.

And as soon as it gets warmer or they start to get more light they wake up. I have never tried that. I have no need. But it is possible :)

Awesome cacti post and a verycatchy song at the end too! @ewkaw

Yes you are very lucky to have almost zero maintenance succulents - other than to keep the cacti outdoors dry. Do you typically get much precipitation between now and late February?

My European mother digs up many of her flower bulbs this time of year and keeps them in a cool, dark place until Spring similar to how you describe it's done in Poland.

How have you been? Sending love from the USA!

Thank you!
I call it the rain season now. We hardly get any rain during the summer and the late fall and winter is the time that it should rain A LOT. Nothing will happen if they get splashed a bit now and then, but there are times it rains for a few days non stop and that is too much for them. I just bring them all in for a few days.

My mum does that too :) Everything is stored in the cellar. Some plants she keeps in pots in the garden and those go inside too for the winter. In and out... every year :p

We are all ok on this side thank you!
Hugs to you and yours :))

Great photos of your cacti. I didn’t know that in Poland (Apparently in many other countries) some producers keep cacti in basements. Amazing. Cacti can really hibernate like bears. Unique plants. By the way, Cool song ... Thanks for the interesting post and amazing photos.

I was surprised myself to read how others do it. It does makes sense in the end and since the climate is not what Cacti normally grow in it has to be somehow replaced by something else.
Thanks for stopping by :)

Beautiful thorns :-)
Yes, cacti are not very complicated, but some of them don't want to be friends with me!

I never knew this! Your choice of black and white is perfect to convey it's time for sleep - lights out..

Loving the instrumental at the end too... Tash is talented... Love the lead up to the vocals 👏🤟🎼

That's what they do in nature to survive low temps.

Ya, it makes sense. Hibernation is pretty interesting. We have a Tortoiseshell butterfly hibernating in our bedroom since September. We'll miss her when she moves out in Spring
