Dilapidated Vologda. Karl Marx Street

If the study of courtyard spaces takes place on an unconscious wave, but then has a conscious result in the form of the studied area, then the study of quarters with dilapidated housing, on the contrary, has a conscious character, in order to get metaphysical sensations later.

When documenting dilapidated housing, no matter how hard I try, there is a grain of fact and immediacy.

From the very beginning, I tried to capture the dilapidated houses somehow more artistically and interestingly than just as a fact, but the very presence of the fact still persists.

Dilapidated houses need to be captured!

Although they are unattractive in appearance and terrible in terms of living conditions, when they are demolished, then no one will later remember what that lost era looked like.

Each has its own mission: someone needs to live in such a house, someone needs to deal with the process of resettlement, and I just need to capture it.

Let's now tell you about the place.

Karl Marx Street in Vologda is located in the Riverside part.

The street is almost five kilometers long.

Karl Marx Street starts from Chernyshevsky Street and ends at the bank of the Vologda River.

Until 1959 it was called Swampy. At the same time, the construction of barracks began.

Two-story wooden apartment buildings have different layouts.

There are one or two entrances, there are houses in the shape of the letter L.

In the courtyards of the houses there are long dilapidated sheds.

Almost all courtyards are closed or fenced off with a wooden fence from the through passage of cars.

The courtyards are generally clean.

In some places there are garages and baths.

In the place where the barracks are, the street is made of gravel and crushed stone.

The barracks are adjacent to both the private sector and stone high-rise buildings.

There are a lot of wastelands - places where a similar house used to stand, but burned down, or was demolished due to dilapidation.

Therefore, the integrity of the quarter has already been partially violated.

Overall, I liked the right side of the street better than the left.

The right one is more well-groomed because of the neighborhood with high-rise buildings. And on the left side there are many wastelands and houses with an unattractive territory.
