Icelandic Inspired Sweater in the Making

Lately I’ve been obsessed with Icelandic knitted sweaters and I’ve been dying to get one for myself. Since I technically have the skills for making on, I finally decided to take up the project.

My favourite yarn shop had a sale so I went a bit cray cray and bought more than enough of Istex’s Lettlopi yarn, with a few more skeins on the way still. I know I’ll be making some mittens with this yarn too. I also bought a pattern after searching for the most inspiring one for days on end.

I actually ended up picking a pattern that is not traditional, but the style and technique is. I had seen this gorgeous sweater months ago and saved it to my want-list, so I decided to give it a go. I went for a light grey as a base colour and bottle green for the foliage, I’m also thinking of doing some with white, if it shows up just enough against the grey.

I’m pretty obsessed with this knit right now and the progress you see here is from two days of knitting. I hope I get to show you a finished beautiful sweater on me in a couple weeks.

Make sure your size chart is. dolphin, orca, whale... 😂

When NASA sent their first astronauts to the moon, the astronauts were ask for the size of their manhood in order to be provided with a pee sleeve. Needless to say, some of them experienced leakage.

The condom initially came in only three sizes: small, medium, and large. Of course every astronaut fancied himself a large, and why not? He was riding on the top of a powerful potentially dangerous rocket, exploring parts of the outer world that men had not yet touched. No one wants to be called "small" when they are planting an American flag on lunar soil.

In the Moon Machines interview, Rethke said that the sizes were changed to large, gigantic, and humongous to better cope with the astronaut's sense of humor.

NO! I do not condone vanity sizing. I fucking hate that 25 inch waist in jeans no longer actually means that the waist measures 25 inches.

But besides that, that’s effing funny! 😂

You know it's really hard to shoot with mittens on?

That's a good point. You better knit me some gloves and leave the tip off the trigger finger.

Jeez, some skills here! How did you learn knitting? And how long did it take you to knit something decent? I don't have the patience to figure it out on my own, might ask grandma to teach me (she's a pro) but I'm always thinking it takes forever to learn...

We have this saying in Finnish: ”It’s easy when you know how to”

I think I was about 10 when I learned how to knit. My mom, grandma and primary school teacher taugh me originally, but after the basics I’ve just been learning by myself more. I was probably 13 or so when I started to knit more and could make a good piece of basic socks or mittens.

Obviously it was hard at first but I really took a liking to it fast so I also learned fast. These days youtube is an amazing resource for learning knitting, you can totally do it of you just have the motivation :)

Cool, once the real winter starts I might get into it, especially if another lockdown hits us :)
