I Build a Wall!

After breaking my back by carrying in 1220 kilos of adult legos, it was time to get to building. I watched a 5 minute youtube video by Weber (the brick company), I got this! I wish I was joking but that’s literally all I know about laying bricks, what could go wrong…

IMG_6534.jpeg

The first layer is done with a normal thick mortar and I tried my best to get it level. It took me probably two hours to do the first layer and I let it set for a couple hours before moving on.

All the other layers are done with this thin very glue-like mortar that’s specially designed for these blocks with joints.

It was fairly easy to do the next layers as the first one was good enough that by following it the blocks went on pretty level. Because I’m a lazy piece of shit, I designed the measurements so that there was no need to cut the bricks until the upper layers. (And I made the Man to do that because I’m a weakling.)

After day 1 I made the Man drill in the holes for the beams that support the sauna benches. We didn’t have proper tools for it so he basically had to chisel out the holes. Not pretty but they will be hidden and I’m sure it’s very sturdy.

Day 2 of laying bricks was more interesting but harder as I added a cove for shampoo bottles, and made the wall in an L-shape to leave space for a narrow tall window.

The heavy lifting is done and I am so proud of myself! Sure my wall is not perfect but I will be putting several layers of plaster on one side, and wood paneling on the other, that will hide my mistakes. I just hope the wall is actually structually sound and stands the test of time.

There is of course still a lot of work that needs to be done but this part was a huge step forward.

Tomorrow we’ll work on the back wall; air vents, studs, and insulating that wall and the coldest corner. The other walls will have a vapour paper thingy (you can see the remnants of the old one) laid over them to keep the moisture inside the sauna and not escaping every which way. I also need to remember to add wiring for another lamp before we put back the panels.

If you know how to build a brick wall and spot any mistakes on my work, don’t tell me because it’s too fucking late to do anything about it!

Ps. I will be going to the sauna every other day when we finally get it back to working order.

Wow! Just be seeing your wall, makes me ashamed about my lousy construction skills. Pretty sure that after the plaster has been applied, and the wood paneling is finished, your sauna is going to be top!

Have you tried though? It’s not rocket science and you’ll only get good by doing it over and over again.

You know, I never had the "courage" to making by myself, but I'm pretty sure that you are right about the simplicity. And of course that practice and experience makes all the way to perfection, like in everything ;)

I never did anything when I was renting but now this shit is mine to fuck up so I’m much more courageous.

Super impressive where you have come from after finding all those hidden horrors. The wall looks great and cannot see any mistakes.

That looks so cool! Very proper sauna looking. Well done, you (ft. Man). Can't wait to see the finished thing of course, but this looks crazy good already.

The man had no hope but as we worked until midnight yesterday and got two walls almost done, he is back on board 😂😅

Thank you very much! I have quite a lot of leftover bricks and I already have a place in mind for them 😝

So a man built a wall for you?

Nope, he was at work. He did saw a few bricks for me and drilled the holes for the beams though.

My comment was more sarcastic than meaningful.

However If I can make a suggestion. When taking photos of a project with you in them, Wear some scruffs If possible get dirty.

The sarcastic comment came from how well you presented yourself while doing a job it is impossible to remain clean with.

You have redeemed yourself, but you need to get better at sarcasm because that is not how it’s done.

These are my scruffs! I have plenty of ”work wear” clothing, some of it is more stylish than a blue worker jumpsuit 😁 I assure you I get plenty dirty while working, I just don’t picture it often.

I don't think I can spot any fault, although I'm not an expert, but I think you did a great job. Well-done.

The wall is still standing after drilling into etc so it’s probably gonna be okay 😁

I love it when I see women do this kind of work, it shows that we are so capable and so resourceful!
