Words are seeds. Some germinate in gardens of tenderness, others in barren fields where there is barely room left for hope. Saying that we must be impeccable with them seems simple, but in reality, it is a profound commitment: it implies recognizing that every syllable we utter can build or destroy, heal or wound, open paths or raise walls.
From childhood, we learn that speaking is more than emitting sounds; it is sharing who we are. At home, at school, on the street, we gather examples of how words can be a balm or a punishment. Life itself teaches us that a verbal gesture can mark someone's memory forever. Who doesn't remember a phrase that sustained them in a difficult moment, or a word that devastated them?
The practice of observing what we say is an act of awareness. How many times have we remained silent out of respect, out of caution, so as not to hurt? That silence, although sometimes burdensome, also protects. It reminds us that not everything we think needs to be said, that prudence is a form of love. But there are also silences that hurt: those that prevent us from defending ourselves, those that make us complicit in injustices, those that leave us with our throats full of truths that never dare to be spoken.
On the other hand, expressing a thought can be liberating. Saying what we feel, honestly and carefully, opens doors to understanding. However, when we speak without thinking, the impact of our words becomes unpredictable. A phrase uttered in anger can leave a scar. A word spoken with tenderness can be the beginning of reconciliation. The difference lies in the awareness with which we use our voice.
The book The Four Agreements offers us a luminous definition: “Being impeccable with your word means using your energy wisely, in the direction of truth and self-love.” This impeccability is not rigid perfection, but consistency. It is choosing to let what we say reflect the best of ourselves, even in the midst of a storm. It is understanding that speaking with truth and love is also an act of respect for our own dignity.
Words have a power that we often underestimate. They have been used to abuse, humiliate, and subjugate. But also to uplift, inspire, and raise up. One speech can ignite wars, and another can bring peace. One phrase can crush a child's self-esteem, and another can give them wings for life. Therefore, being impeccable with what we say is an ethical responsibility: it is not only about caring for others, but about caring for the mark we leave on the world.
The invitation is clear: observe ourselves. Ask ourselves what we say, how we say it, and what intention lies behind it. Recognize that each word is energy that expands beyond us. And decide, with courage, that this energy be light and not shadow. That our words be bridges and not knives. That our voice be a memory of tenderness and not of pain.
In the end, being impeccable with words is a path of constant learning. No one always achieves it. We have all made mistakes, we have all unintentionally hurt others. But we also all have the opportunity to make amends, to apologize, to choose again. Impeccability is not a destiny, it is a daily practice. It is the art of speaking truthfully, respectfully, and lovingly. And in that art, a great part of our humanity is at stake.
