Twitter's Profile Picture NFTs - Safe Space for Creators?

avatar

I recently read one of the article where YouTubers were getting their content stolen and turned into NFT. There was no protection against NFT copyright filers in this case. And the creators are struggling a lot against this type of squatting of original content.

After this incident, I also checked one of the Deviant art creators' issues. Their content was stolen and then turned into NFT and then copyright was filed back against them. Unfortunately, a lot of them are under heat due to this in the deviantart community.

When decentralized communities can't protect creators against such theft and copyright issues. It's natural for the creators to go for the centralized systems where their content is verified with their identity and then kept for sale etc.

Twitter one of the social media companies known for censoring people, has created one solution in this space. They have recently launched the service for the profile picture NFTs. And they also allowed the Twitter Blue users to verify their identity before getting the NFT on their profile.

How does it make them safe space?

Sometimes you need escrow, an entity to lean on and protect you when you are the solo creator, developer, writer and another person who is using identity as an NFT. This is where twitter is making a dent.

They have the means to verify people and turn their profile pictures to NFT. They can also use the blockchain to verify the content and also be part of the sales. Creators can blindly rely on them to take care of their property and save them from any unauthorized use on their own platform.

Do we need centralized entity in this?

As much as I hate having the centralized entities to help in this issue. It's always a good idea to have centralized organizations to help people who can't help themselves. Imagine women losing their images and seeing sales being made in NFT market by using their name. Having centralized organization and regulation can be helpful in this space.

What do you think?

I like how twitter is helping the creators and the average public to get help in the genuine process of the NFT verification. I hope more big companies help out creators too. Because there is no decentralized process that can protect people in this. So centralized or not, having helpful entities is always useful.

What's your opinion in this? Do you think such profile picture NFTs from big companies is a good idea?

I haven't looked into this much, because I have no personal interest in NFTs, but I have one BIG question about any major player 'giving out' NFTs...

Who owns them?

Everything you post to Twitter, Twitter owns. Same for YouTube, Facebook, Instagram... all of them as far as I know. When you send them a picture, video, or thought, it becomes their property.

I find it hard to believe that they're suddenly going to start turning ownership back over to creators.
