Hello friends, I hope you are well. Today I want to tell you about my experience traveling from Bogota to Valencia by land through a private transport service and the experience traveling by plane from Valencia to Bogota. In this post, I will tell you how much I spent, how are the roads in terms of alcabalas, how was my return, and the comparison between the two modes of travel.

My trip starts on Friday, March 25, 2022, travel from Bogota to Cucuta on a bus, prices range between 90 and 110 thousand pesos (approximately between 25 and 30 dollars) according to the bus line you choose (remember that costs increase when there is a holiday or it is vacation time) these tickets can be purchased at the terminal El Salitre or Terminal del Norte and be 1 hour before boarding the bus. This trip lasts between 14 and 15 hours, if you travel at night the bus will not make long stops to eat something, so take precautions, if you travel during the day, the bus will make stops along the way. An important fact, and if you are a person who gets dizzy easily, is that in Pamplona there are many curves, so I try not to eat before passing through this place. When you get to the terminal you will find many people who will offer you a cab service if you are not in a hurry and you can ask for costs, you can get an economical one, a minimum of 25 thousand pesos (about 7 dollars).

When you get to the border, again you will find many people who will offer you the service of a porter, there are several exchange houses where you can change your pesos into dollars. Crossing the bridge is simple, they do not check or demand any type of document and when you arrive in Venezuela, although there is a presence of the National Guard, I did not see that they asked for any identification, (and I clarify that I am not saying that this is right, I am only commenting what I could observe).

This time I traveled with a cousin, and we hired a man who was recommended to us, who provides the service of transportation in a private car from San Antonio to Valencia. This service has cost 70 dollars per person, however, if you want to travel alone you can hire the service for 280 dollars. The trip is made in a Chery car, without air conditioning, but comfortable. The man providing the service identified himself as a former member of the Sebín. And he assured that because he was a former member of the Sebín, he would not be stopped in any police station, which was an outright lie. The departure is at approximately 11:30 am from San Antonio, he must be paid at the time of boarding. There are approximately 90 alcabalas from San Antonio to Valencia, these are from the National Guard and the police, and there may be both at the same point. Generally, they only ask where you are coming from and where you are going, in some, they ask to see your IDs, in others they don't, my bags and my cousin's bags were never checked and they never took any money from me us.

This service gives you the facility to make stops to eat, go to the bathroom, get off and move your legs whenever you want, you go with a few people or alone and it is more comfortable. As for food, we ate a roast chicken and a soft drink at noon and an arepa almost at nightfall and we spent approximately 15 dollars between the 2 of us. So far we have spent approximately 107 dollars per person, about 400 thousand Colombian pesos. Arrival in Valencia was at 12:30 am.

Friends, my return was a little different, faster, and more comfortable. An important detail to highlight is that I returned to Colombia at Easter, so the prices that I will mention below can be found a little cheaper at other times of the year.
Travel from Valencia to Santo Domingo del Tachira by TURPIAL airline, the ticket value was $ 75 dollars, about 280,000 Colombian pesos, these flights depart once a week, only on Wednesdays, so it is necessary that you plan your trip taking this information into account. As in every flight, you can check one bag in the hold and one carry-on bag, you must be there at least 1 hour before the flight and you must fill out a form where they ask you questions about your health and that of your companions. They started to call the passengers half an hour after the stipulated time, the flight started with some turbulence and the condition of the plane is not the best. This flight lasts approximately 50 minutes. We landed at the airport of Santo Domingo del Tachira which is called Aeropuerto Mayor Buenaventura Vivas, it is small, without air conditioning, and looked somewhat deteriorated. Mr. Edgar was waiting for us to take us from Santo Domingo to San Antonio, this service cost 60 dollars or 230,000 Colombian pesos. It is worth mentioning that if the flight is in the afternoon you will have to spend the night in San Cristobal since the border crossing closes at 6:00 pm, therefore your expenses will increase.

The Venezuela-Colombia crossing is open from 6:00 am, Venezuela time, and is by ID terminal, that is, on even-numbered days those whose last a number of their ID ends in an even number will be able to pass and on odd-numbered days those with an odd ID terminal, for example on the 12th, those with an even number will pass and on the 13th those with an odd number will be able to pass. However, if you present an airline ticket for that day you will be allowed to pass even if it is not your turn by ID terminal. For those who present an airline ticket, you must present your cedula and passport, no matter if it is expired. (ENTRY TO COLOMBIA BY CEDULA TERMINAL ONLY APPLIES TO VENEZOLAN CITIZENS WHO DO NOT HAVE A COLOMBIAN ID CARD).

Well, friends finally arrived back in Bogota, in my opinion, both options are more comfortable, with the transport service you must take into account that the costs are a little higher than by bus but it's worth it, plus you save time. However, if you can come and go by plane you save the annoying passage through alcabalas, the fear that they take money from you and a trip of 2 or 3 days you turn it into only 1. I hope you find this information useful, comment what you think if it is worth the expense, if you have any questions I will gladly answer them, and do not miss my next posts where I will talk about costs in Valencia and tell you the minor details of my trip from San Antonio to Valencia. Kisses to all.
