Pizza Rolls And A Funny Story
Last week I saw a pizza roll recipe on YouTube and knew I have to make some pizza at some point, so saving the recipe seemed like a smart thing to do. I have my own recipe, but when it comes to pizza, I'm ready to try out new recipes. Today I finally had time to do magics in the kitchen, so I thought why not try out these pizza rolls for lunch. (Not exactly the typical lunch around here, but i couldn't care less.)
You probably know me by now, I'm most likely never following the original recipe to the letter as it's better to tailor it to my taste, rather than blindly follow it. It was the case this time as well. Not because the original recipe was not good, but because I liked my version better. The original recipe has too much pepper, which can make the rolls wet and can have a bitter taste too. Been there, done that, no thanks.
So the recipe that caught my eye was this one. I remember I watched the video, bookmarked it with the intention of finding it when I have the time. Today I dug it out, looked at the recipe in the description and started putting together the ingredients. My recipe is a double quantity as I knew one will not be enough, so if you want to compare my recipe with the original, please keep this in mind.
- 200ml lukewarm milk,
- 200ml lukewarm water,
- 120ml olive oil,
- 14g dry yeast (the recipe says 20g, but trust me, 14g is more than enough),
- 8g salt,
- 2tbs sugar,
- 840g flour (I used type 650, which is bread flour).
Ingredients For The Topping
- pizza sauce,
- grated cheese,
- diced ham.
The method is very simple, you don't need any previous experience, but it's good to have some, as in my case it serves me well. Otherwise I would have been in trouble.
Start with adding the liquid ingredients to the mixing bowl. Add the salt, sugar, dry yeast and mix well.
Here you should slowly add the flour and start kneading, but I used the easy way and added the whole quantity of flour and made the mixer knead the dough. This is called smart working 😁.
After 10 minutes of kneading, the dough was ready. Covered with a plastic wrap, I let it rest for about an hour (recipe says 40 minutes, but one hour is fine).
After one hour rest, this was how my dough looked like. It doubled basically, which was the purpose.
After that, on a floured surface, I knead the dough a bit, then divided it in two.
I tried my best to roll it out nicely, to get a rectangle shape, but I suppose that needs more practicing.
This is when I went rogue again. The original recipe doesn't have pizza sauce, but as I have my own, homemade sauce, I thought why not use it. So I spread the sauce on the dough. It looks awful as it has veggies in it and spices, but it tastes heavenly good.
The next step was to spread the ham and grated cheese on the dough, evenly.
After rolling it up, I got a 20 inch long roll.
I used my plastic spatula (or whatever you call that white plastic thing), and sliced it to 2mm slices.
The rolls look awful as I did not spend half an hour shaping them nicely. I'm guilty of that.
And this is where I went rogue again as did not follow the original recipe. What you see on the video is nice, golden brown as the author brushed the rolls with an egg yolk-oil mix, but I skipped that. The truth is, I saw no point in adding more calories to the rolls, just so they look better at the end. So I skipped that step.
In a preheated oven, I baked the rolls for about 40 minutes at 150°C.
My rolls are not exactly golden brown, but I couldn't care less as the taste is what counts. The photo shoot was not for a cooking magazine anyway.
So here's my roll, filled with ham and cheese.
And now let me tell you the adventure I had to go through today. As I mentioned above, I knew the process already as have watched the video before, so today I only checked the recipe at the description section, I thought that will be enough for me.
This is the screenshot of the recipe. As you can see, the first two positions are the same. I thought it's a mistake and only prepared the milk. It seemed a bit odd as 320ml liquid for 840g flour is not enough, but I trusted the recipe. (You usually need 300ml to 500g flour.)
When I added the ingredients to the mixer and after 3 minutes of kneading I saw there's no way of getting a soft dough out of the mix, I need to check the video again.
Turns out one of the first two ingredients should be water. So I needed to add 200ml warm water, then the dough was just perfect.
I'm mentioning this in case you want to make these pizza rolls, to save you from the trouble :) So as I said, no necessary skills are required here, but wouldn't hurt to have a bit of experience.
Soooo, pizza rolls anyone? 😏

Looks so tasty and yummy. I really love pizza. Pizza rolls tastes so good and your pizza roll looks great that made me wish to have a bite. Great recipe.
God I saw pizza, and I had to see the post. I'm pizza's number 1 fan. Those rolls look delicious, my mouth is watering. And how is it that the original recipe did not have sauce, if the pizza should have it, thank goodness you put it, because they must have been divine.
I will keep this recipe, my husband is the one who makes the pizza here, but I will have to encourage myself not to wait for him. If it were up to me, I would eat pizza every day, it is a delicacy of the gods for me. I love them in all their presentations.
Thanks for sharing your risky recipe hahaha. Bon appetit @erikah 💕
I leave you another piece of !PIZZA 🍕
Thank you! I was also amazed by the lack of pizza sauce in the original recipe, but you know, we all have out preferences.
I hope you'll like this recipe. The truth is, if you like pizza, you'll like this one too, so good luck with it :)
Awww, how cute! Thank you! 🤗

Hi @erikah! Wow that pizza looks worldwide, great for get-togethers or for the kids snack
Thank you. It is good for every occasion and for packing as well.
I would gladly have some of those pizza rolls and I can say that your finish product did end up too well😊. Just looking at that pizza, I can say that the taste is delicious.
Pizza is one of my favorite so can't miss the chance to have a bite. How I wish.. It made me to crave some at 3am. hihi. I'd be saving this one for reference soon when I get to make one.
Lol, thanks for the nice words. It was indeed very good. I'm keeping the recipe as most likely my family is going to ask for more. The truth is you can never go wrong with pizza, no matter what's the occasion. I hope you can make some at home :)
Hi @erikah, we're also big pizza fans at home 🍕. We make pizza rolls when we don't have much time. We make it easy for ourselves by buying ready-rolled puff pastry that has already been rolled out. I just take it out of the packaging and it is ready to use. For the filling, I also use ham, cheese and I always add oregano. But home-made dough always wins! Thanks for sharing!
Pizza rolls are easier to eat honestly. It is the same as flat pizza, but in fact it isn't. Oregano is a must, but my sauce already has it, so I don't use extra on pizza. And I always make the dough from scratch. Thanks for stopping by.
Good thing you're experienced with making pizza crust dough, caught the mistake in the recipe and added water before it was too late!
Indeed, some experience never hurts and here's the proof. I should leave a comment under the video, maybe they can correct it. Thank you for the nice comment my friend 🙂.
You're welcome, Lovely! @erikah
Yes, leaving a helpful comment about the error on the recipe video is a a terrific idea so there's no surprise over milky pizza dough!🍕🥛😊
Looks very delicious, I will try your recipe.
Thanks for sharing 😀
My pleasure and good luck with it.
I've never made my own pizza rolls. Not a huge fan of pizza rolls but yours look good. Now I have only had the frozen ones that come pre maid in the bag so I can't really judge 😂.
I do make miniature pizzas though. I use English muffins. Super easy, pizza sauce, cheese, and toppings. Oven 400 F 10 minutes. I've done with plain bagels too.
As far as recipes I'm hit or miss. I'll follow if simple and sounds good. Head scratching details or ingredients I don't like I will deviate.
I'm only making rolls when I'm lazy 😂. For some reason it's easier to make and to eat too, you just take one, then another one, then another one ... and so on.
I'm always making pizza from scratch as the dough is the most important. I bought frozen pizza a couple of times from the supermarket, but never again. Did not like it at all, so why waste money then. I can make my own at home, it's simple and cheaper as well. Now I only have me to blame if something goes wrong 😁.
Yeah frozen pizza is usually not the best. If you find a good one it cost too much, at that point it better to order one or like you said make your own :) It is hard to mess up making a pizza pie though. As a young man I made pizzas and delivered them so maybe my opinion is a little over weighted, haha
Pizza roll is very sweet, I just recall the day we prepared it for the children during cookery, your pizza came out nice and looks sweet 😋 and yummy.
As soon as I saw the picture this was the first thing I was going to mention, but I saw that you yourself beat me to it haha. I've never prepared pizza mostly because I thought it had too many ingredients, but I see that I'm absolutely wrong.
They look pretty tasty, the final photos didn't look so bad after all :P
You are wrong, actually you couldn't me more wrong 😃. Pizza has just a few ingredients, it's not complicated at all. And I don't care how my rolls look, taste is what matters.

Always welcome to the community.👨🍳
Hi @erikah , I like the way you prepare those pizza rolls, you actually gave me a different idea of preparing pizza normally. And I think it's also feasible in a sharing as you don't even have to be chopping much hahahaha 😃.
Change is always good and there are a million ways to make pizza, so no reason to stuck with one. It is easier to eat as well as you can take one in your hand and eat it with a couple of bites, no need for fork and knife. Try it out one day, you won't regret it 😃
You are a great baker.. I wish I could bake again. But this gluten intolerance sucks
I'm trying. Sometimes I succeed, sometimes I fail. Gluten intolerance sucks indeed, my niece had gluten free diet for a few years and made my life complicated. I was tutoring her that time and she came from school, I gave her lunch and had to learn to cook gluten free meals.
By the way, have you seen my corn pie recipe? That is a very good dessert for gluten intolerant people.
All factory-produced food has gluten..even seasonings..it's really hard ..sometimes I have no choice but to eat and just suffer the consequences lol.
Gonna check your recipe..i like corn.. But it has to be flour.. Flour has gluten too...
Umn how tasty 😋😋 around here we are encouraged to prepare it. We love pizza although I only cheese, because of problems with my allergy. But with cheese I'll settle for it.
Thanks @erikah for sharing your good taste for the recipe I would also prepare the sauce, they are very rich and around here when it is tomato harvest we take advantage of buying a basket and we get to prepare. 🤗❤️
The filling can be of any kind, whatever you like, from veggies, to meat, it's up to you. I'm sorry to hear you have allergies, that must make your life difficult.
Pizza sauce is good. This year I'm planning to make some as I like it, using the home grown tomatoes we have in the garden. Must make enough to last for a whole year.
Good luck 😘🤗
No way...I'm hungry AF right now and then...your bloody pizza rolls appear before my eyes to make the situation worse...and it's not even lunch time!
Seriously though, I'm starving, so an early lunch might be the order of the day. I could go a fresh baked pizza roll, but I think I'll have to settle for something else.
Remember this? What did I tell you? 😂😂😂
I wish I could send you some, but for that to happen, someone has to invent teleportation 😏
You did warn me, I remember.
Food teleportation should be a thing, there is no doubt.
Imagine, you could order your lunch from me every single day 😂.
What would you order? 😏

That looks so delicious! Can I have a bite? hehe 😁
Whenever I try to make pizza dough it ends up getting burnt even if it isn't thin. I realized it's partly about the flower because the next time it was better when I used a different type of flour. I respect how your dough looks very fluffy. Nice recipe @erikah! I should definitely try this pizza roll idea sometime. 😀
I like your cooking skills, I like to cook too so I hope we can collaborate.
If you don't mind stopping by:
Thank you, I wish I could send you some.
Burning the dough can have many reasons and I don't think flour has a role in it. Most likely the oven is the culprit, or the level of heat you're using.
Your dishes look good too, congrats.
Thank you. Almost every time when it comes to dough, we like to get reference from the internet and experiment with the heat. So used to using frying pans and cooking, baking is still something to perfect. Love your tutorial. :)
This your pizza is trying so hard to give me a paradigm shift about pizza lol.
In my whole life of more than 20 years, I’ve ate pizza only once. Not only because of the fact that it’s a rich man’s food here, I didn’t enjoy the one I ate after blowing a budget to get it. It was too spicy. I think it was a chicken pizza or something related to that. It tasted like a rich person’s bread. Not good!
Even till now, I still believe that pizza is overrated and I won’t be having one anytime soon. Unless it’s for free😁
But this your own 🤔 hmmm
There is a great variety of pizza, some are spicy, hot, so you need to know which is which, so you don't get a hot or a spicy one.
Looks like we live in a different world as pizza in Europe or the U.S. is not the food of the rich at all and it's not overrated either :)
Hehe the world is big oo😂
As I’m talking now, the last time I saw a slice of pizza was the one and only time I bought it. That’s three years ago.
Pizza is expensive here and if you’re not a big boy, you can not be seeing it everyday
Wow, those pizza rolls look amazing! I can almost taste them through the screen. I love how you made this recipe your own by tailoring it to your taste, and your photos and step-by-step instructions make it easy for others to follow along.
I totally agree with you about not blindly following recipes. Sometimes a little tweak can make a big difference, and it sounds like you nailed it with your version. I also appreciate your honesty about skipping the egg yolk-oil mix. It's so easy to get caught up in the aesthetics of a dish, but at the end of the day, it's the flavor that really matters.
Thanks for sharing your pizza roll adventure with us!
You're right, sometimes a little tweak can make a big difference and if you have a little experience, it's easy to modify the recipe. The only recipes I'm not playing with are the sweets one. When it comes to cakes, I first go with the original recipe 100%, then if it is necessary, I make some changes.
