Segunda temporada de Sombra y Hueso // Season two of Shadow and Bone

¡Hola amigos! El fin de semana pasado terminé la segunda temporada de Sombra y Hueso, y déjenme decirles que, al menos en mi opinión, sigue manteniendo un buen nivel en cuanto a producción y la manera de contarnos la historia, ya que tiene varias tramas que luego terminan confluyendo en una sola.

Hello friends! Last weekend I finished the second season of Shadow and Bone, and let me tell you that, at least in my opinion, it continues to maintain a good level in terms of production and the way the story is told, since it has several plots that then end up converging into one.

Es sabido que a veces se puede perder un poco la calidad de una temporada a la otra, de amar mucho la primera y odiar la segunda. Sentí que esta sí tuvo algunos momentos flojos, pero me estoy precipitando. Antes de empezar a contarles lo que me pareció esta segunda temporada me gustaría recapitular lo qué pasó en la primera.

It's well known that sometimes you can lose a bit of quality from one season to the next, from loving the first one a lot and hating the second. I felt that this one did have some weak moments, but I'm jumping the gun. Before I start telling you what I thought of this second season I would like to recap what happened in the first one.

Sombra y Hueso nos cuenta la historia de Alina Starkov, una joven huérfana que supo mucho tiempo después que era una Grisha. Los Grishas son personas con cierto don para manipular los elementos, como el aire, el agua, la tierra o el fuego; también hay Grishas con dones mucho más peculiares como la habilidad para manipular, moldear y controlar el hierro; hay otros que son sanadores o pueden moldear la apariencia de otra persona. Pero hay uno muy muy especial, el Oscuro, aquel que posee el don (o la maldición) de crear y manipular sombras. Este ser creó un muro de sombras que fue creciendo y extendiéndose hasta tomar forma y alimentarse por sí misma, esta sombra dividió el país de Ravka en dos y es casi imposible cruzar al otro lado sin morir en el intento porque allí viven criaturas peligrosas. Sin embargo, nuestra joven Alina no solo descubrió que es una Grisha, sino que es otra muy muy especial. Ella es la elegida, aquella que puede liberarlos de este mal porque su poder es la luz, se la conoce como la Invocadora del Sol.

Shadow and Bone tells the story of Alina Starkov, a young orphan who learned much later that she was a Grisha. Grishas are people with a certain gift for manipulating the elements, such as air, water, earth or fire; there are also Grishas with much more peculiar gifts such as the ability to manipulate, mold and control iron; there are others who are healers or can mold the appearance of another person. But there is one very very special one, the Darkling, he who possesses the gift (or curse) of creating and manipulating shadows. This being created a wall of shadows that grew and extended until it took shape and fed itself, this shadow divided the country of Ravka in two and it is almost impossible to cross to the other side without dying in the attempt because dangerous creatures live there. However, our young Alina not only discovered that she is a Grisha, but that she is another very very special one. She is the chosen one, the one who can free them from this evil because her power is light, she is known as the Sun Summoner.

Alina y el Oscuro, acá el general Aleksander Kirigan, son como el ying y el yang, estos se convierten en aliados potenciales para buscar a un siervo blanco que funciona como un amplificador de poder con el que planean aumentar el don de Alina para destruir la sombra, pero el Oscuro tenía otros planes en mente, así que se convierten en enemigos. Hacia el final de la primera temporada parece que logran derrotarlo ya que termina en las sombras siendo atacado por unas criaturas llamadas Volcas. Ahora queda el problema de tratar de destruir la sombra.

Alina and the Darkling, here General Aleksander Kirigan, are like yin and yang, they become potential allies to search for a white servant that functions as a power amplifier with which they plan to augment Alina's gift to destroy the shadow, but the Darkling had other plans in mind, so they become enemies. Towards the end of the first season it seems that they manage to defeat him as he ends up in the shadows being attacked by creatures called Volcas. Now there is the problem of trying to destroy the shadow.

Este fue un resumen bastante breve al lado de todo lo que pasa, sobre todo porque la serie no se centra solo en el personaje de Alina y el Oscuro, también está la trama de los Cuervos y la de Nina y Matthias, pero no los quiero spoilear, ni que se haga demasiado extenso.
Ahora sí pasemos a los hechos de la segunda temporada.

This was a fairly brief summary next to everything that happens, especially because the series does not focus only on the character of Alina and the Darkling, there is also the plot of the Crows and that of Nina and Matthias, but I do not want to spoil them, or make it too long.
Now let's move on to the events of the second season.

Como no podía ser de otra manera, obviamente que el Oscuro no murió, sino que se alineó con las sombras, ya que son su elemento y las empezó a extender rápidamente, tragándose varios pueblos a su paso. Pero Alina, Mal y compañía no lo saben, porque están muy ocupados escapando de la ley y tratando de buscar los otros dos amplificadores, el Azote Marino y el Pájaro de Fuego. No solo esto, sino que el Oscuro usó una magia muy antigua y peligrosa llamada Merzost y con ella creó dos seres hechos de pura sombra, imposibles de matar ya que no poseen cuerpo y se pueden reagrupar, que además lo protegen. Sin embargo, este tipo de magia, que es pura, exige un costo elevado que pagar.

How could it be otherwise, obviously the Darkling did not die, but aligned himself with the shadows, since they are his element, and began to spread them rapidly, swallowing several towns in his wake. But Alina, Mal and company don't know this, because they are too busy running from the law and trying to find the other two amplifiers, the Sea Scourge and the Firebird. Not only this, but the Darkling used a very ancient and dangerous magic called Merzost and with it created two beings made of pure shadow, impossible to kill since they have no body and can regroup, who also protect him. However, this type of magic, which is pure, demands a high cost to pay.

Por otro lado, tenemos a los Cuervos: Kaz, Inej y Jesper intentando volver a su vida de antes pero encontrándose con que los estafadores han sido estafados en su ausencia por andar de héroes junto a Alina y Mal. Acá entra la trama de Pekka Rollings, que les robó el negocio a los Cuervos y ahora controla la ciudad de Ketterdam. Además él y Kaz Brekker tienen un pasado en común y este último buscará venganza. A su trío de ladrones se terminan sumando un muchacho muy simpático que es experto en explosivos, Wylan, y Nina Zenik, la mortificadora. Ella se alía a ellos porque quiere conseguir un permiso para ver a Matthias que esta en prisión.

On the other hand, we have the Crows: Kaz, Inej and Jesper trying to get back to their old life but finding that the crooks have been swindled in their absence for playing hero with Alina and Mal. Here enters the plot of Pekka Rollings, who stole the business from the Crows and now controls the city of Ketterdam. He and Kaz Brekker also have a common past and the latter will seek revenge. His trio of thieves is joined by a very nice boy who is an expert in explosives, Wylan, and Nina Zenik, the mortifier. She allies herself with them because she wants to get permission to see Matthias who is in prison.

También habrá muchos personajes nuevos, incluyendo a un corsario que no es en realidad quien dice ser y sus seguidores. Además de Grishas que se sumen a la causa de el Oscuro. Se podría decir que este personaje es una especie de antihéroe porque lo que quiere en realidad es que los Grishas dejen de ser cazados por sus dones y busca que los humanos se dobleguen a ellos. Aunque en el camino termina usando métodos poco ortodoxos que lo convierten en un ser despreciable y temido hasta por los mismos Grishas que están a sus ordenes.

There will also be many new characters, including a corsair who is not really who he claims to be and his followers. Plus Grishas who join the Dark One's cause. It could be said that this character is a kind of anti-hero because what he really wants is for the Grishas to stop being hunted for their gifts and seeks to make humans bend to them. Although on the way he ends up using unorthodox methods that make him a despicable being and feared even by the same Grishas who are under his orders.

Se podría decir que esta segunda temporada tiene un comienzo más que emocionante. Sin embargo, lo realmente bueno vino en la segunda mitad de temporada, teniendo su punto máximo en el penúltimo capítulo donde se dio una batalla bastante épica de esas que terminas con el corazón en la boca porque todo pinta muy mal para los héroes. La verdad es que no pensé que iba a sufrir tanto. Para mí este fue el mejor capítulo de esta temporada. Pero no quiero dejar de destacar el último ya que tuvo una escena final digna de ganarse un premio al gore. Nunca me imaginé algo así. También tuvo un par de giros de trama que me impactaron un poco, como lo del origen del amplificador del Pájaro de Fuego, entre otras revelaciones que habrá que esperar a una próxima temporada para ver cómo se terminan desarrollando.

It could be said that this second season has a more than exciting beginning. However, the really good part came in the second half of the season, having its peak in the penultimate chapter where there was a pretty epic battle of those that you end up with your heart in your mouth because everything looks very bad for the heroes. The truth is that I didn't think I was going to suffer so much. For me this was the best chapter of this season. But I don't want to leave out the last one because it had a final scene worthy of winning a gore award. I never imagined something like that. It also had a couple of plot twists that shocked me a bit, such as the origin of the Firebird's amplifier, among other revelations that will have to wait for next season to see how they end up developing.

Para ser franca disfruté mucho de esta segunda temporada, lo que me gusta es que cada uno de sus personajes tienen su tiempo de cámara y escenas para que se luzcan. Al ser tantos no es un trabajo fácil, sin embargo, fluyó bien aquí. Algo negativo que encontré es que utilizan varios términos de palabras que no te explican su significado, después lo podes terminar deduciendo solo, pero deberían explicarse. Pienso que los que leyeron los libros los deben de entender, pero para el resto de los mortales deberían tener en cuenta estos detalles.

To be frank I really enjoyed this second season, what I like is that each of its characters have their camera time and scenes to shine. Being so many is not an easy job, however, it flowed well here. Something negative I found is that they use several word terms that don't explain their meaning, you can end up deducing it on your own, but they should be explained. I think that those who read the books should understand them, but for the rest of the mortals they should take into account these details.

En definitiva, es una serie que sin dudas recomiendo que la vean si no lo hicieron, tiene su toque justo de humor, drama, giros de tramas, personajes increíbles, escenas muy buenas y conmovedoras, también algunas muy oscuras y tormentosas. Creo que podría gustarle a varios por toda la mezcla que demuestra, además es un mundo muy rico para explorar y explotarlo más. Así que espero con ansias una próxima temporada.

In short, it is a series that I definitely recommend you to watch if you haven't, it has the right touch of humor, drama, plot twists, incredible characters, very good and touching scenes, also some very dark and stormy ones. I think many people might like it because of all the mix it shows, plus it's a very rich world to explore and exploit more. So I look forward to a next season.
