I cut his hair myself one night.

Samson

I was listening to an old playlist I had on Spotify when Samson by Regina Spektor played. I never really bothered before, but now I'm obsessed. I've come to a realization that I should have had before: it's a really nice song.

Some interpretations went:

  • It's a song about Samson, whose hair gave him incredible strength, and Delilah, his lover, who eventually betrayed him by having his hair cut.
  • It's a song about the same Samson in point number 1, but with a different woman -- a servant Delilah brought in to cut his hair. The lyrics went: "And history books forgot about us, and the bible didn't mention us." Obviously, Samson and Delilah have been mentioned in the bible, so the song's narrator could be anyone but Delilah. (It's also said in the song that the person loved Samson first.)
  • It's a song about a woman who stays with her lover, who was dying of cancer. "Your hair was long when we first met; Samson went back to bed, not much hair left on his head."

My favorite part of the song, however, was:

Oh, I cut his hair myself one night, a pair of dull scissors in the yellow light.
And he told me that I'd done alright, and kissed me till the morning light.

I think the song was spectacular! I worked on this artwork while listening to it -- I might draw another one with this song in mind.

I had many plans.

I had many plans while working on the sketch, but it ended up being reduced to... this.

I intended to draw many jewelry, but I got impatient and bored, so I... settled with what you can see now. I had fun working on the skin, though! There was supposed to be some hair, but thought against it eventually. It felt just right to keep it this bare. (Heck, I wasn't even supposed to add the head jewelry and earrings!)

In my last drawing, I used a different Medibang brush. This time, I went back to watercolor, but took the time to actually explore different settings. Of course, I still preferred the ones I've been using the past three years, but it's still nice to deviate once in a while.

Here's a quick overview of how it went. See how it transformed from a more imaginative jewelry to increasingly bare artwork? 😅 I honestly thought this wasn't going to take a while, but it did. I had trouble exploring the watercolor brush and thinking about how I could make it look more obnoxious, but, meh.

I think it worked somehow?

Even the background underwent major changes, it's just not shown here in the GIF. I was so focused on trying to see which ones work that I completely forgot I was saving them into JPG each time.

Rants Notes

I decided to take a leave of absence from school this semester. I know, I know, it's just been one semester, yet I'm making this decision already! It's not without a lot of thought put into it. I have a $4.5k worth of technical and professional certifications and trainings I need to complete by May. I can't possibly let that opportunity go. My school is expensive (and it's well-known to be expensive). I pay for everything, so before I shove them my money again, I need to recuperate my wallet for a while first. 😅 And work... is work. If I want more time to look after myself, I need to compromise and let go of one thing first. I can't possibly multiply myself and do one too many things at a time, and expect I'll get out of it unscathed. I don't want getting sick twice in a month ever again. It's annoying. And draining.

Anyway, that was such a rant! I just want to say that I'm making time for myself, my commitments, and drawing! It would probably have taken me a month again before I could have released a new artwork otherwise, but look, here we are! See again soon, with maybe another Samson-inspired artwork!
