The Road to Better Health

avatar

As I have mentioned in the last post about the subject, this year is about self-improvement. To be more specific, I'm focusing on the physical aspect of my well-being. Here's the progress report of my attempt to get to a healthier weight.

I've been around mid-160s consistently these past several days. I hope to continue the trend and get below 160lbs. Then, I'll think about what I want to do next. I could try to sculpt myself further or put myself in maintenance mode.

I was surprised at how fast my body acclimated to going back to the gym. I was extremely sore the first few times I went there. Now, not so much. I will have to increase the weights I use to continue pushing my body. For example, I have only been doing 100lb in sets of ten with pectoral flies. In my younger and better days, I was doing 145lb+.

The CDC continues to remind me that I am overweight. The gem at the top of the page about Covid should be a motivating factor for those who are fearful, but I guess not. Obesity is out of control in this country.

If I go below 160lbs, I would be at the high end of the "healthy" range. I won't stop there. I may try to push myself lower. And if I do gain weight, I hope it's due to muscles and not more fat.

I'm still upholding the no soda except at work policy. I usually drink soda for the caffeine. I may consider switching to the green tea leaves offered at work instead. Other than that, it's only water and the occasional orange juice during meal times.

There are other things in the works, but I'll hold off for the day. Here's to becoming a better person physically.

There was definitely a point during the pandemic time where I drank 2-3 cans of soda a day.

Go for it fella! You're not so far out at that weight for height. Gym will make you hold the weight as you swap fat for muscle, so as long as you feel better, that's all that matters :-)

That part will require work given the external factors.

Been doing work myself for my wedding in a month. Trying to get under 290 pounds. Been doing well. Lost about 15 pounds this month just by doing dumbell squats , shoulder and chest presses at home. Its a wonder how much you can do at home without having to pay for gym.

Id just stick to strenght training if i were you. When im doing weight cuts cardio makes me feel flabby and with a few strenght excercises you can almost equal the cardio weight loss.

I prefer strength training anyhow.

Good luck with getting into wedding shape!

Living abroad or just going abroad, you realize how toxic American food has become. Japan is starting down that road too, but way far behind. Everything in the US has sugar in it. I was shocked when I looked discovered sandwich bread has sugar in it. Nothing is sacred!

Getting sugar out of your diet has been huge for me personally. I'm talking about everyday food, not deserts though. Soda and coffee are huge sugar silos. I've stopped using sugar in my coffee and now I can actually taste how good a coffee really is. Green tea is probably one of the best drinks because it has no sugar, real green tea,. It has caffeine and the polyphenol, catechin. It's an incredible drink. If you can't handle regular green tea, Jasmine green tea is delicious. They can usually be found at any bigger Asian markets in the US.

Anyway, good luck man. I've gotta loose some pounds too after binging on craft beers, cheese and sweets in Japan. Maybe I'll document my strategy....

Good luck with that! I'd give anything to be 160! Actually, I think I would probably look sickly if I were that weight. More like 200 or 185 and I would be happy. I am a long way from that and the gym doesn't seem to help too much. Getting old sucks.

I’m actually not that tall, so the relative weight makes more sense.

Yeah, I get that. I am only 5' 10" though, so not too much taller than you. I just like food too much.

Other than that, it's only water and the occasional orange juice during meal times.

You should try Lemon juice - salt and sweet or only salt. Honey in the morning also helps.
