Many a little...

Some weeks ago, I received the following message from my bank.

For context, I do have several credit cards with my bank. For a long time, only one of them has had the option of higher cashback depending on the type of expense. My bank probably thought they should toss a bone or two for being a customer for so long.

By upgrades, I could choose more categories of expenses to receive 5% and 2% cashback (up to a certain amount which resets each quarter). Each quarter, I'm allowed to choose two 5% categories and one 2% per card. Otherwise, I receive 1% off any purchase.

Now, I can add gas and restaurants to my list of 2%. It doesn't seem like much because it isn't. However, I don't mind getting more back with rising fuel costs. It costs over $50 to fill up the 15-gallon tank of my car right now. The restaurant part is irrelevant as I seldom go to one.

When you look at all the available categories for 5%, you see several useful ones on that list. Fast food and cell phone have been my go-to for a long time. Now, I can add home utilities and streaming services to the list. I have a subscription to YouTube Premium to get rid of ads. That's there for my podcast binge that started earlier this year. As for utilities, I'll take it as energy prices rise. The other categories seemed too situational.

In the grand scheme, cashback is a small amount of money. Inflation continues to erode these small victories. Still, I can receive up to five times the cashback than I did before. I feel as if I'm penny-pinching, but who would say no to more savings? Every bit counts these days.

These little things do add up on the grand scale even though It may seem like a little now. I make use of these kind of opportunities and freebies as much as I can.
