THE BEAUTIFUL THING ABOUT OUR MOTHER TONGUE: An Aspect of our culture We Often Neglect
Hello beautiful people of the cross culture I bring you all greetings in abundance from the Ibibio tribe of Akwa Ibom state NIGERIA, it’s a great day here in this side of the globe the sun up and heating up everyone else minding their business up from around 5am to beat the traffic….but despite all this what has caught my attention is the how everyone seems to go seamless in their conversation, talks negotiation and divers communication then I noticed one thing significance about all of this….THE NATIVE DIALECT
One thing remains a fact The very first form of Identity is our native dialect the uniqueness and how special it all makes us feel….
In a multi lingual nation like NIGERIA with over 525 different languages spoken over 371 tribes with an overwhelming estimated population of about 206.1 million people as at 2020 only adopts English as it official language and lingual franca, you find out how complicated it is to find your way out in the crowd and mingle with people especially when visiting a different state like Lagos that is largely populated by the yoruba's and you re let’s say an igbo speaking man from the igbo tribe…
"less I forgot there are three predominate tribes here and it is because of their population in the country this are the IGBO's YORUBA's and the HAUSA/FULANI TRIBES occupying the eastern, western And northern Region respectively"
Not to talk of other very highly populated country like India, China, U.S and Russia and you find out that the first thing that bring people together or fist form of identity is the native dialect or mother tongue, reasons why I had to to talk about some of these fact about Nigeria and other large country by population is the case of native language and how it has helped people navigate thru the crowd and finding one another, engage in conversation, and communicate at ease without having to think about what to say next
It’s so Amazing at how God create human same everything but speaks entirely different languages all together, say for example you traveled abroad where you don’t know any body and then you heard someone speak your dialect…. you’d be shocked to your marrow …like really so I’m not alone here and you’d do everything to locate that person…. that’s why I said it’s our first form of Identity not from a cultural perspective tho but from the angle of picking that person to be same as you …like terms and things in common
The beauty of our native tongue cannot be all seen in one picture because there are numerous benefits to speaking your mother tongue…. count with me
Ease of negotiation….I’ve personally experience this a thousand times over, especially when buying stuffs with the locals if you engage them well you get to buy expensive things at a lesser price or even get a bonus
Aids one in times of need have you been in a situation where you so need help desperately and everyone possibly sees you as a set up or thief ….but if you spot someone speaking your language and walk up to him or her then you are sure into good hands
Finding new friends one of the really great things about mother tongue especially in a foreign land is that it helps you pair with some one who could possibly turn a great friend
It is a very unique form of identity It becomes very easy to locate and spot someone who’s from your tribe and makes you stand out from the sea of people around you
Free flow in conversation ever finds hard to speak foreign language. English, French, Spanish or Latin, compare this to speaking your mother tongue it’s seamless and makes you feel really awesome
OUR WE GRADUALLY LOSING OUR IDENTITY?
I’m speaking from the stand point of My Country Nigeria…. Were our local languages are gradually losing value, because of the frequent use of The Queens language, been colonize by the British The English language has become our official lingual franca, almost in all areas… our schools churches, social gatherings, the markets, families now adopts it as day to day means of communication putting aside the native dialect, so you see that children grow up speaking all English with very little or no knowledge of their mother tongue, and so I’m particularly scared that in the next future, generations our mother tongues will finally fall into oblivion and forgotten…
THE GOOD NEWS
In my country just of recent I saw a post on facebook of our local kinsman dressed in our full regalia with the inscription bring back our Language…..and recently I noticed that in our university there are course on ibibio languages and foriegn languages too especially in The Faculty of Education because the end point is this teachers and curriculum will be taught in primary and secondary schools across the state, same thing goes to other universities in the country and I’m very excited about this……
